Thought their caption to this photo was odd... how is cleaning shoes - even SLOWLY - ominous??

Great. Computer access for inmates. What could possibly go wrong?!

I know your comment is dripping in sarcasm but:

This…this right here….this is what can go wrong when inmates get computer access.

Do they have those things at IMSI? To my knowledge, they can receive food packs from a national supplier, but IMSI has only the basic packs. I would be very surprised if they allow fresh fruit at this level of incarceration (they don't allow it most jails and prisons because the prisoners use it to make fermented beverages).

The IMSi policy manual limits how much inmates can use in commissary when they are first year. It can take a year or two to get maximum commissary privileges, although they might be able to get the approved commissary packages (not tailored to vegan diets, so he'd have to trade with people which, again, won't be his privilege for a while).

When he gets to Gen Pop, or more unrestricted privileges, he might be able to eat fruit or have fruit juice while in a common area, but I'll be very surprised if they allow it in his cell, which is where he must stay for now. For probably six months. If he were in a regular prison, he could even work up to being allowed to use a prison kitchen and cook his own food (and order more things). He's under top security at a maximum security prison.

Here's what those prison packs look like:

If you try to click through to see what you can send to IMSI, I don't think they're listed as a possible recipient. In addition to these snack foods, if the prison were enrolled in the full program, they could get fresh ingredients (like those boxes we all can order for ourselves).

We can probably lay bets on long it will be before Fruit Cup works his way up to a transfer to a less restrictive institution (I put my money on "never") or even to be allowed to work in the IMSI kitchens (again, betting on "never").

I find grim satisfaction in learning that he is going to have to eat meals based off of what all other prisoners get, without much or any fresh fruit, nor fruit juice, nor avocados.

IMO.
It's interesting to me that many observers don't understand that prison is horrible and you have no control over your life. That will be excruciating for a guy who thinks he's superior to others and expects to be on the same level as the people in charge.

Indeed.

I'm concerned as well.

I don't doubt inmates are finding ways to get around the restrictions; what else do they have to do with their time??

However, in The Felon's case, gaining access to forbidden media will come at a price, along with everything else he wants. 😉😏

He's lost his daily shower privileges, his meals are messed with, and he's getting taunted by other inmates.

He will have an "interesting" life from now on.

JMVHO.
I read further back that he took 1 hour showers at the jail. That seems crazy long. I don’t like that prisoners should have access to the internet. I guess I will just have to be satisfied that his food trays aren’t up to his standards.

Menendez as well.
Oh, and he later divorced her
Oops,
both brothers got married while in prison.

Wasn't it reported that BK got money
from his "fans"?

Oops!

Oh,
I found the name of this phenomenon

"Manifestations of hybristophilia
include the romanticization of criminals, especially serial killers."

We even have a saying in my country:

"Every monster will find its admirer"
(Although in Polish it rhymes)

Just guessing, but maybe it’s tied in with the red hands that are also mentioned here. Those have been attributed to his obsessive hand-washing and his hour-long showers, so perhaps it’s “ominous” because it pertains to his rigorous and scrupulous OCD rituals.

I agree though that “ominous” is too strong of a word here. It implies something dreadful is about to happen, but of course he’s already done the dreadful thing.

Just my speculation.

wow that was 22yo Nunes !
As you said - unflappable. Despite what he'd just seen, despite coming from a small PD, he was over everything multi-tasking - armed clearing the scene, securing the scene with tape, witness statements, family on scene, feet-pads for the shoe-less, blankets and water, checking traffic on the road.

Now you tell us he covers life-saving and duckings too.
Please let us know when he gets promoted.

what is duckings?

I just asked AI Overview if prisons could offer read-only internet of a few sites chosen by the prisoner and approved by the institution.

"Yes, prisons can and in some cases already do provide highly restricted internet access to inmates, including read-only options with pre-approved websites."

I imagine the monitoring could end up being problematic given that angry and/or devious (and maybe drug-hungry or at least money-hungry) prisoners with endless time on their hands can get creative. Investing in a monitoring system could be costly. But the possible benefits listed were educational opportunities, improved mental health, support for reintegration, and reduced idleness.

For the specific prisoner we have in mind, reintegration is a mute point, and we may not care if he has the rest of the stuff, but certain overall benefits to the institution related to providing inmates some screen time have been mentioned here in the past.

Internet access could conceivably help the staff maintain order, giving them a nice carrot to put on a stick to extend or pull back. Let's say CNN is provided, for example. Just one site but there is a lot of reading there, and the content changes throughout the day.

I would think read-only access to certain sites could help tamp down any chaos that might result from allowing inmates to interact more freely with technology?

ETA: Never mind email. Let them send letters the old-fashioned way.

I’m sure that complaint is coming in shortly! So many hours in the day, you know.

I hope they block them from watching p o r n. I was once in the children's section of the library that had computers in it so people could access the internet. One of the kids (maybe 15) was watching live p o r n!!! I was like Holy Moly! I hope kids don't walk in here and see what's on the screen before I can go inform the librarian! I'll bet they figured out how to block certain things after that. lol 🤣

RBBM

I'm sure they will do their best to block certain sites. Hopefully, they're successful most of the time.

He's lost his daily shower privileges.

Every other day now. And probably not for an hour at a time anymore either.

It's prison, Pal. Not the Hilton. Not the Y.

I don't much care if his dinner is a bread basket short. XK didn't get to finish her fries.

IMSI uses JPay as the private tech company that provides tablets, email communications, video visitation, etc. to inmates and they control the programming and security. Includes email communication services, video visitation, educational programming, music and games. Recently added some counseling resources. Families and loved ones of the prisoners also can apply to use JPay and send money to an inmate, etc. So IMSI contracts out the inmates' access to technology in relation to programming, access to sites, email communications, video visitation, financial dealings, and security.

oh I missed that tidbit
what was the reason he lost daily privileges?

I wonder how inmates on J-Block who are restricted to their cells get access to pastors and priests and other religious leaders and how often. Maybe it is done by video visitation?

Terrible. Should be no messaging.
There are so many web based apps now that keeping track of it is probably impossible at this point.
Go back to TV. One way signal - into the cell.

Yes, the toilet looks extremely low to the floor, which wouldn't be fun, but I noticed the extensive railing system around the toilet and thought, oh, how nice. They don't want anybody to fall down and go boom.
