Federal police join manhunt​

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is in Ballarat this morning for a summit. He's expressed his condolences to the families of the two police officers killed in Porepunkah on Tuesday.

"This is a horrific incident," he tells ABC Ballarat.

"Tragically, it is so reminiscent of the loss of life we saw only a couple of years ago in Queensland."

He says the Australian Federal Police is joining the search for the gunman.

He says he's also offered any support the Victorian government requires.

"We need to find this perpetrator so people can be reassured he is not going to cause any more damage," the prime minister says.

Be interesting to find out where the wife sits in all this palaver.. I gather from her songwriting skills that she was a devotee of non vax stuff, not based on her non scientific degree , naturally, but on feels, but as to the rest of it, the revenge against police, the endless shouri's with the neighbors, the evictions, the actual livin in a bus, ,she comes from the Philippines to live in a bus in Porepunkah, that is one hell of a journey... As the search continued, the spotlight turned to Freeman's wife, who friends say had been 'isolated and living her life in fear' of her domineering husband.

She has three children, including a young baby to worry about and is just beside herself with worry about what may happen next,' a close friend told Daily Mail.

'She knows him, she has lived with this and watched it escalate for years. The man is a ticking time bomb.'

There were initial fears he may have taken his wife and children hostage after Tuesday's shooting, but police later confirmed they had safely presented at a local station.

'Mali does have some of the same values as Dez - she didn't believe in vaccinations and wanted to home school their kids - but that was where it ended,' said the friend.

'What has unfolded now has absolutely horrified her and she is now terrified at what might happen next because a man like that won't go down without a fight.

'Her husband is armed and has allegedly already killed two.

'She knows there may be more deaths and that one could even be his own.

'But he is still her husband and father to their kids. He has always looked after them and she loves him.'

Updating her Facebook profile she wrote that 'Music with Mali is on hold until further notice.' and quit performing at local pubs where she had become a regular fixture.

Not a very comfy position for her, then. She would have a strong inclination to be tightlipped with the police, if she grew up in Manilla, Or even out in the backblocks in the Philippines.. And Dez's crazed disproportionate actions and rantings against VICPOL would be a bit nervewracking for her...

Apparently, she got booked for some traffic offence ,and Dez amped it up to something a lot bigger and she got her licence cancelled as well, a real handicap out in the bush..

Two arrests made during Porepunkah raid last night​

Victoria Police just issued the following statement:

Police have taken two people into custody last night as part of their investigation into the fatal shooting of two police officers and serious injury to a third during the execution of a search warrant in Porepunkah this week.

Fugitive Squad detectives, along with Special Operations Group members, attended a Porepunkah address about 8.40pm.

A 42-year-old woman and 15-year-old boy were safely arrested at the address and taken into custody.

The Porepunkah pair were interviewed and released pending further enquiries.

Extensive searches remain ongoing for the offender Desmond Filby, also known as Desmond Freeman, whose location remains unknown.

We urge the public in and around the township of Porepunkah to remain vigilant and report any sightings or suspicious behaviour by calling Triple Zero (000).

We don't have much information about why the 42-year-old woman and 15-year-old boy were arrested or any link to the shooting.

Police have said the arrests "form part of the ongoing investigation into the deaths of Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart".

The two officers were killed in the line of duty on Tuesday morning when a group of 10 officers executed a search warrant at a property on Rayner Track in Porepunkah.

A third officer remains in hospital with lower body injuries.

Significant police resources are being tipped into the search for alleged gunman Dezi Freeman, including detectives from the Homicide Squad and Fugitive Squad.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Great point, Marg. It's been reported that they have been married for 20 years, and IMO she does look to be in her early 40's. The 15 year old boy's age matches what we saw of their sons on the current affair interview from 6 years ago (they looked between the ages of 8 to 10).

One of my colleagues has just received a condition update from The Alfred Hospital about the police officer injured in Tuesday's shooting.

The 56-year-old male detective underwent surgery for lower body injuries.

A hospital spokesperson confirms they remain in a stable condition.
