Victoria Police chief commissioner says officers did risk-assessment before entering property​

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush told ABC Radio Melbourne that the group of officers involved in the search warrant yesterday did their own risk-assessment before entering the property.

"They were fully equipped. They've done a risk assessment before doing the search warrant, but they certainly weren't, which is quite obvious, expecting this response."

Radio host Rafael Epstein asked him whether the team had called for the Special Operations Group to assist in the operation.

"They would have made that assessment at the time. I'm sure they could have asked for the Special Operations Group, but they've made a call about this themselves," he said.

The chief commissioner confirmed 100 people were involved in the search on the ground and "several hundred" were involved in the investigation overall.

He said there was no information to suggest the accused gunman had left the local area but acknowledged that he could have left if he was able to access a vehicle.

They may not have found him with thermal imaging equipment because he’s dead / killed himself?

Even if he’s not yet, I can’t see him walking out of this alive. IMO

When it comes to the sex abuse warrant/investigation, I believe “historic” sex crimes are technically incidents prior to 1991.

That’s when major changes to legislation happened in Victoria. Suspects must be charged with offences as they were written at the time of the alleged incident.

If so, DF is 56 now, so the warrant may relate to allegations from before and up to him being 22 years old.

Historic crimes can mean any crimes in the mid to distant past, IMO

I did notice that the Beyond Blue and Lifeline links have started appearing in some news articles in the last half hour.

It may mean nothing about the offender.

More likely for the family, friends colleages of the deceased Officers, and for the area and whole country.
And for the Police force as a whole.

No-fly zone declared over Porepunkah​

“All aircraft are now banned from flying over the Porepunkah search area.

The temporary restricted airsplace declaration is effective immediately and has been put in place until 11:30pm on Friday.

If he has a car, it is only about a 1 hr 15 min drive to the NSW border.

Or only 6 hours if you drive as fast as he does to the South Aussie border

That said he left the area in a car.

What did they expect when they swarmed the property of a person who vehemently hates them and has declared war on them - Devonshire tea and cupcakes?

I can understand the response.
He's been on police radar for years and has seemed to have stuck to expressing his loathing of the police with words, until now.

You can see behind me it's very steep. There's a lot of dense bushland.

"There's a lot of natural caves in these mountains, meaning there's a lot of potential hiding spots for Mr Freeman, meaning there's still some quite difficult conditions for police to navigate."

Suspect did not own the property where shooting took place

The suspected Porepunkah gunman, Dezi Freeman, did not own the property where the shootings took place.

Guardian Australia has been unable to speak with the owners, a local couple.

It is unclear if the couple had been living on the property with Freeman and his family, but they were not there at the time of the shootings.

Attempts to contact the owners via social media and family members have been unsuccessful. Property records show that they sold a separate property in a nearby regional town earlier this year.

The couple had operated a business selling chestnuts, and appeared at local farmers markets.

A man who also claimed to live at the property had parked his car over the driveway on Wednesday, preventing access beyond a front gate.

The car had a note on the dashboard that read “left car here to prevent reporters to access private land. I live here” and included a phone number.

The man declined to comment, but when asked if he had spoken to the owners of the property responded that “everything was under control”.
