Search for alleged shooter could go on for ‘some time’, local member says

The federal member for Indi, Helen Haines, says Porepunkah is in “deep grief” and “shock” as they await news on the alleged gunman.

Speaking on ABC Goulburn Murray, Haines said she was “deeply worried” for police officers and emergency services personnel “putting their own lives on the line” as the search continued amid “difficult terrain”.

This is mountain country, thick bush country, deep valleys and ravines, caves, and it’s terrible weather.
Haines said she had spoken to the prime minister who had indicated the federal government stood ready to do “whatever they can” if requested by the state government.”

This individual is supposedly someone who has very advanced bushcraft and this is rugged terrain … this is an extraordinary operation that’s ongoing and could be ongoing for some time.

Sexual offence charges against him are not so "historic" then....

"New details emerge about search warrant

Fresh details have emerged about why police attended Dezi Freeman’s property in Porepunkah on Tuesday morning before he allegedly opened fire and killed two officers.
Sources have revealed that police had visited the property to execute a search warrant and speak to the father-of-three about alleged sexual offences against a child under the age of 16.
It's understood the alleged offending had occurred in the past two years."

I remember some years back when we were allowed to smile in the photo on our drivers licence, but not on our passport photo. So we were expected to look grim when heading off on a long-awaited holiday apparently, but pleased to see a policeman glaring through the car window. I'm still trying to work out what the occasion was for that photo of Desmond.

Elite AFP team join Porepunkah manhunt

The Australian federal police’s elite tactical unit has joined the hunt for suspected Porepunkah gunman Dezi Freeman.

The AFP confirmed its officers had joined the search after a request from Victoria police. A spokesperson said:

The AFP can confirm it is providing assistance to the ongoing police operation in Porepunkah, Victoria, at the request of Victoria police.

Any further inquiries should be directed to Victoria police.

Guardian Australia understands that officers from the tactical response team have been deployed.

The team is known to deploy in Australia and overseas to support high-risk operations.

The AFP says on its website that:

The team uses specialised, rapidly deployable technology and other tactical capabilities.

As a Tactical Response Operator (TRO), you’ll take part in operations to resolve, manage, and disrupt serious threats to the Australian community.

So the huts don't provide a lot of protection from the weather.

They don't provide a lot of privacy either, so maybe not much use if you want to hide in one.

Hey folks,

We know it's tough but we can't take and post direct quotes or images from paywalled articles.

from: The Rules: Copyright Rules

PAYWALLED ARTICLES:

Members may link to a paywalled article so that others who wish to pay for the article can read it. However, even if they have paid for it, members can not screenshot/copy/paste, or quote directly any content within the article. It is not only a violation of Websleuths TOS (aka The Rules), it is a violation of copyright law.

Members may very briefly paraphrase (in their own words) what the article is about or they can copy the Google hit summary to give an idea of what the article contains in the event people wish to pay for the article.

"Gifting" of paywalled articles is not allowed. The qualifying word is "paywalled". If an MSM or other source allows its subscribing members to share a gift article with a few of their friends, they do not mean you can post it on a website where thousands and thousands of potential paying subscribers can read it for free.

Severe Weather Warning just issued, affecting most of the state. Blizzard conditions for alpine areas above 1200m. Mt Buffalo NP is just outside the warning area, but conditions will still be tough going for search efforts.

Weather deteriorates at search site

By Melissa Brown

The Alpine region's famously cold climate is proving a factor in police efforts.

ABC News reporter Annie Brown describes the conditions on Statewide Drive:

"We've just had a hailstorm pass us through … it is pretty harsh conditions up here.

"[The search] still seems very heavily focused on the bushland area behind the property where the incident occurred on Tuesday morning, so the helicopter's still making circles around that property."
Low cloud hangs over the top of green pine trees with mountains in the background.

Two helicopters remain at the scene, as well as the police dog squad and heavy-armoured BearCat vehicles.

"We've also seen more than a hundred police officers… in and around the area," Brown said.

"Police officers have been doing patrols just to give people peace of mind and keep people safe as well."

Atrocious conditions for the searchers

Search near property appears to be ending for day

“It looks like the search near the property is starting to wrap up again for the day as the two Bearcats and a convoy of police vehicles have just left the area.

The roadblock is still in place but the rain has started coming down and the hills are covered in thick cloud cover now.”

Roadblocks around property cleared

The road to the property Dezi Freeman lived in was at the centre of the action yesterday with the police roadblock, a helicopter flying overhead and several loud popping noises heard in the area.

This morning, access to the property is completely restored. A red car that had blocked the driveway has been driven to the side and there are no police around.

Police have told the ABC there has been no sightings of Freeman since Tuesday when he ran into the bush, despite the roadblock near the property he lived in."

Another aspect of Desmond's idiocy is,, this Sunday, the 'alernatives' . that is , the miscellaneous groupings of anti-islamists, anti - soap , anti - govt, anti-women, anti law, plus assorted stupid Nazi hoons, along with the anti -vaxers, the anti meat and 3 veg folks had all planned a march thru the Capitol cities, on the 31st August, to counteract the current huge civic successes of the marches for Palestine..... these mobs are calling themselves, March for Australia, and Desmond ,singlehandedly , has very nearly scuppered their moral stance, they are tarred with being cop killers now, not a good look , not in Australia, they look like total idiots now, and also, it will give the police a fair idea of who you are for future reference....

What the organisers thought might be big is now going to be a sort of embarrassing scrabble, limping along....

Its an ill wind that blows no body any good.....

Wait do they stop searching overnight? That gives him 8 hours + every night to move without detection?

I thought we were discussing a police response to alleged shootings. Your post sounds more like you've decided how a march seemingly unrelated to this incident will play out before it happens. I thought this site was apolitical. Or have I missed something?

Could it be due to the poor weather? Seems strange though

My point is, it is related. That you have missed the connection is hardly my fault.
I thought we were discussing murder. I don't know that the response of police to these killings is in any way of any dispute., How many ways can police respond? I mean......These two murders were , if they were nothing else, were political murders. These men were murdered because of the job they did.

Mr Freemans entire adventure is one of politics. it's why he is holed up somewhere in his tracksuit pants, sopping wet, waiting for a sign.

To be fair. The reason this thread exists in the first place is because of the gun mans political views
