Results from Genealogy DNA testing are in!

Also, male dna mutates about every 500 males. Just thought I would throw that out there, lol....this is what makes the YDNA stuff not the same kind of fingerprint MtDNA is....

Great! Now we have to make room in our brains for mutations? This DNA "stuff" is mind boggling! (Thanks for trying to keep us educated though...:blushing:)

She cannot do the y-dna testing. It would have to come from a male.
Also, the file that I put on here came from Ancestry and may not be acurate. This is someone who submitted the file. I have not personally checked it, and it is possible it is incorrect.

Thanks for the clarification. Of course 'she' couldn't take the test. ;) but with her interest in genealogy, perhaps she could convince a male member of her family to be tested. Especially if she agrees that Mr. Kyle strongly resembles her great grandfather. I don't know 'her' (and I am assuming she is a female based on the site title) relation to the am radio dj who is in this Powell family line, but perhaps we could email him as well.

It's worth a shot, if for nothing else other than a rule out.

Hi Everyone,

Been following this case and others for a long time. This one and the Grateful Dead Jason Doe case just fascinate me.

Anyway, Cubby I think you are on to something. The resemblance of Benjaman to Clarence is remarkable. So much, that I looked up Clarence on ancestry.com. I found a family tree someone had posted that had Clarence in it. I emailed the submitter asking if they had ever heard of this case. I was hoping they might have some info on a long lost relative.

Turns out the submitter is the great granddaughter of Clarence. She was very nice, but had never heard of this case and didn't mention any long lost relatives. She did state she had the DNA results of her father (Clarence's grandson) and was willing to help.

Here is part of her email

"Clarence is my great-grandfather and I have a lot of information on the Powell line. The first place I have them is in the Monogahela County, West Virginia area. The family migrated to Ohio from there, and eventually over the years moved into Indiana and Iowa. There was a Powell family that stayed in the West Virginia area, that are possibly related to my Powells, but I have never found a direct link to substantiate this.

Clarence served in the Spanish American War in Florida and word-of-mouth stories say that he married while there. I have never found anything to substantiate this though. "

So has someone fully checked out the Powell line that went to Indiana, per this posting? It appears that Kit # 146923 -N29376 are all part of the Joseph Powell line, and these specifically are the Indiana lines:

The reason I ask is because one of the Powells, Elmer Lee Powell, was raised by his aunt and uncle: Ora and Bonkmer. Elmer was born in approx 1907-08 Also, help me understand something---if BK has paternal DNA pattern to the Powells, would/could he have a different last name, or should his last name definitely be Powell (except in the case of adoption etc)?

Also, in the Jame Buchanan Powell Jr line, it appears that James B. Powell Jr raised his grandson, James A Schweers, who was born in 1915. Here is his SSDI info: Name:James A. SchweersSSN:303-22-5742Born:12 Apr 1915Died:19 May 1988State (Year) SSN issued:Indiana (Before 1951)

His info according to 1920 census:

Here is 1930's census info:

I am thinking Dorothy is James A's mother. Father may have been Walter D Schweers (who was married to someone else, with several children, and 43) The reason I believe it is him is because he also lived in Manchester, IN at the same time (and from what I can tell was the only Schweer living in Manchester at that time). It is also possible that Inez (Walters wife) was a Powell before marriage and her son went to live with her parents for some reason. I found several Inez Powells in Indiana, but none that seem to match her. Yet.

I did find a listing for Dorothy M Schweer living in West Lafayette, Indiana as of 1993. I do not know if she is the same one. If so, she married Mr. Schweer. Hmmm no, don't think so. This Dorothy appears to have been born in 1918.

I cannot find any other info on James A Schweers after the 1930's census, other than the SSDI. I will dig further to see if he had children etc.

I am working on kit N48878 and 146923 - SC13
These are Lovely Abraham Powell's line.

Carolwood, I thought you were working on the Joseph Powell line. Can you tell me the reason for the switch to Lovely Abraham Powell?
I presume you have seen this: http://newsarch.rootsweb.com/th/read/POWELL-DNA/2009-04/1240760938

jt
Somewhere in Lovely's line is a Joseph Powell, whether it be a brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, etc, and something we don't know unless we get more male Powell's to have there dna tested.
The reasoning behind the Lovely line is kit N48878 is the closet numbers to Benjaman.

Could one of you brilliant sleuthers please tell me why Mitichondrial Dna is not as widely use as the Y line haplotype tests in tracing relation between two indivduals? This type of DNA is passed by a mother to both male and female offspring without any mixing, so your mtDNA is the same as your mother's mtDNA. It would seem that both typings should be used in genealogical testing.

"Mitochondrial DNA is very useful to exclude possible matches between missing persons and unidentified persons. Many researchers believe that MtDNA is better suited to identification of older skeletal remains than nuclear DNA because the greater number of copies of MtDNA per cell increases the chance of obtaining a useful sample, and because a match with a living relative is possible even if numerous maternal generations separate the two."

Also on a unrelated note, I found a Eugene Powell AKA Randy, of Tucker Ga. on classmates, he has many of the same features as Mr. Kyle, especially the nose. I am not a subscriber to the site to find out any information but he could possible be related to him, based on appearances.

I took a look at this man.
He does have a look of BK.
Might be a relative.

On the other hand, everyone looks like BK. Well, almost everyone.

Yes, I agree Dream, all those Powells, for sure are kin, what a strong line. Now we have to place Ben in one of the families, so we can identify him.

In a nutshell, MtDNA is not passed from a man to his children. So, since Ancestry is based on the widely held belief that families follow the surname of the male, it is not as helpful determining relatedness. MtDNA does not mutate the way Y DNA does, so if you and I have similar MtDNA, it could be thousands of years old.....

Make any more sense?

FWIW, I shot off an email to that Sharyl, who had the family member, Clarence Mosteller Powell, which Believe and I thought strongly resembled Mr. Kyle, listed on a Powell genealogy site.

I am still trying to catch up now that I have a fully functional computer. As I get more done on my 'to-do' list for Mr. Kyle, I will post an update.
