The tail of AirAsia QZ8501 passenger plane is seen on the deck of the Indonesian Search and Rescue (BASARNAS) ship
Crest Onyx after it was lifted from the sea bed, south of Pangkalan Bun, Central Kalimantan Jan. 10, 2015.

If you are wondering why it looks pretty mangled and ripped apart, just watch the YouTube video a few posts back in the thread.

What was floated to the surface was the tail-fin or vertical stabilizer. The CVR and FDR are not located in this part of the aircraft. The CVR and FDR are located in the *tail section* (empennage) just aft of the aft galley. This part of the aircraft has been located as seen in this video (divers entering the aft service doors) so I expect that the CVR and FDR should be recovered soon and should be in good condition.

So I wonder where the rest of the tail section is, the empennage. Is it in the same spot as the tail fin, or somewhere else?

:gaah:

fell off my chair......you have got to be kidding.....OMG.......psst .....the whole world is watching.....no face saving possible
My apologies to disagree, but I do not think the whole world is watching or paying close attention. The French terrorist attacks appear to have taken over the news replacing in large part the recovery of this aircraft.

Not having seen anything about the crash in the headlines I'm coming here for all the updates!

Yep ... they are fighting about command of the search, as suspected.

Indonesian military chief blasted for role in AirAsia jet search effort

http://news.asiaone.com/news/asia/indonesian-military-chief-blasted-role-airasia-jet-search-effort

I am glad he chose to visit the site and remain on the ship overnight -- it was probably the kind of pressure required to insure that the work got done. MOO

With the presence of international vessels at the ready it was a reasonable national pride that he be there - again MOO

"Moeldoko has defended his role in the operation, saying that he had decided to lead the efforts to retrieve the plane's tail since Thursday, given what he described as a critical situation. "I decided to go directly to the field because the situation has reached critical level," he said on board the KRI Banda Aceh warship. "That's why I came here, to check the preparation of my team. I don't want them to make mistakes that could jeopardize our mission."

Curious, from the images I have seen, if it's possible the black boxes are not with the majority of the wreckage?

Earlier today and last night there had been some speculation by Air Asia and Indonesian authorities that the black boxes ''could have fallen out" per MSM

excellent photo taken by Russians at this link:

the article is about the ''severe damage to the tail''

Thanks....as I said in my previous post, I have been relying on what is being discussed here for updates. Just makes sense if the tail section broke off where it's believed that the black boxes could have fallen out separately into the water.

“Sonar equipment has continued to detect more objects which are suspected to be the plane’s front section and detected pings suspected to be from the plane’s black box flight recorders near the location where the tail was found,” report officials.

Sea divers, vessels and helicopters were deployed to observe the focused searched area.

This morning, the seven remains which were recovered by BASARNAS yesterday (09/01) arrived in Surabaya and were transferred to Bhayangkara Hospital for identification."

I've never posted this news source before but I have posted it.

I have been attempting unsuccessfully to determine whether an airbus can be delivered without CVR and flight recorders (black box).....from what I have gleaned it is up to 'national' authorities to govern safety of their aircraft.

Lots of pics at this link of them dragging the tail onto the ship. Looks like the ship may have been feeling it too.

How are they going to determine exactly what happened to this plane, how it fell, points of impact etc, if they treat the wreckage in this way? The black boxes, if/when they find them, will not give them that kind of detail.

Maybe it doesn't matter? :dunno:
