Since we have a lull and I did ask the question (worst flight) I guess it's my turn. One was when we hit the wind sheer (if that's what it is called when the plane drops) Our youngest hollered out "cool" Everyone else seemed to freeze. My Husband grabbed my hand with a death grip and looked at me like pleading for an answer. I was calm. I did reply "I got nothing" Luckily we were close to our destination and carts were secure and everyone was in their seats. One of the Stewards did get hurt but nothing fatal. My ultimate worst was flying many, many years ago with 2 other Gal Pals. Long before I was married. There were 3 guys behind us around the same age who took advantage of the booze cart Mach 90. They were trashed 2 hours into the flight. Kept trying to engage convo and none of us were interested. One of them stood up hung over our seats and began singing "your so beautiful" and proceeded to puke all over me. Ya just happened he had the middle seat and so did I. My head, my clothes and we still had 7 hours of flight time ahead. Flight attendants helped me clean up as best they could. Good times. Good times! LOL

Eeewwww .... you poor thing Bravo! Bet you didn't feel so beautiful after that.

O/T Our fires are really bad, houses gone but the people are okay so far, but the animals .... my daughter's friend was told to write her phone number on her horse's hooves and let him run, a pic of a singed koala in a person's arms sipping water from a bowl ... other stuff too sad to mention ....

Thanks. We just laughed it off. What else can one do LOL. I am so sorry to hear how bad the fires are now. Of course the human life is so very important but the animal stuff brings me to my knees. So very sorry. Any sign of containment?

No, not yet, 13,000 hectares burned ... out of control ... they are trying to maintain a perimeter but spot fires keep flaring up elsewhere ... 30 homes lost so far. More very hot and windy weather expected on Wednesday. Worst fire since 1983. Two elderly people unaccounted for, hoping that they are taking shelter somewhere. :praying:

O/T It's been terrible watching the fires in reports on sky news here I can't imagine how horrible it must be for those living through it. It showed people who has lost everything and one woman who runs a kangaroo sanctuary let her house burn down so the firefighters could save her animals. I saw the koala drinking from the bowl of water in the fire engine. It's been very moving to watch. All the people and animals affected must be so frightened. I send my best wishes to you SouthAussie and everyone affected as others have said please stay safe.

The news about the plane crash seems to be less frequent now I'm keeping my eye on any new articles and I will post them.

"...Experts say this suggests the experienced former air force pilot, Captain Iriyanto, conducted an emergency water landing which did not have a destructive impact. “The emergency locator transmitter (ELT) would work on impact, be that land, sea or the sides of a mountain, and my analysis is it didn’t work because there was no major impact during landing,” said Dudi Sudibyo, a senior editor of aviation magazine Angkasa. “The pilot managed to land it on the sea’s surface,” he added.

“The conclusions I have come to so far are that the plane did not blow up mid-air, and it did not suffer an impact when it hit a surface, because if it did so then the bodies would not be intact,” Chappy Hakim, a former air force commander, told AFP.

The fuselage is also thought to be largely intact after aerial searchers saw a “shadow” on the seabed, where operations are now being focused. An emergency exit door and an inflatable slide were among the first items recovered by the search team, suggesting the first passengers may have started the evacuation process once the plane landed on water.

Former transport minister Jusman Syafii Djamal was convinced the discovery of the floating exit door meant “someone had opened it”. Passengers may have been waiting for a flight attendant to inflate a life raft when a high wave hit the nose and sank the plane, Djamal added. “High waves may have hit the plane, the nose, and sunk the plane.”"

I sure hope the people quoted above are wrong. I'd like to think there was instantaneous finality when they hit the ground.

I know the weather is horrible, but in my simple mind, it seems more progress should have been made by now. I hope those in charge of the search are competent. (But searcher safety is key!) This is such torture for the loved ones!

No, I'm fine thanks Bravo, as are my family. I am further south along the Adelaide Hills, but another WSer has family that has had to go stay with others as a precaution.

The media gets the ELT's messed up. The ELT are for impact with ground, triggerred by preset G-load parametere. When hit it goes to satelite and informs. THey will not work in wet envoronment. THere are another type of alert that are water activivated. And then there are "pingers" which are for black boxes and do work underwater.

So the notion that no ELT activation indicates low impact might be incorrect inferance. Think were gonna end up as ice issue which started the chain of events.

JAKARTA - The chief of Indonesia's search and rescue agency Basarnas expressed optimism on Sunday that the black box of AirAsia Indonesia flight QZ8501 was located "not far" from five large objects the search operation had spotted in the Java Sea.

"The black box should not be far from the five significant objects we found," Mr Fransiskus Bambang Soelistyo told a media briefing at the agency's headquarters in Jakarta late on Sunday.

"Our challenge is mud. Lots of mud at the sea bottom."

Up to now, he said, no vessels had detected any signal beamed from the black boxes, or flight recorders.

Indonesian Brig. Gen. Arthur Tampi, the head of the national police medical department, said as days passed it was becoming more difficult to identify victims without DNA samples from families.

“It’s impossible to identify them visually.”

Authorities in Surabaya have identified nine of the bodies, and experts from South Korea and Australia are due to arrive Monday to help identify the others, according to a statement from AirAsia.

LIVE BLOG: AirAsia flight QZ8501 crash day 9

Ground crew at Pangkalan Bun awaiting the arrival of the 34th body found in the QZ8501 search, brought from sea to shore via an RSAF Super Puma helicopter.

7.18AM: AirAsia has downplayed an incident that saw one of its planes turn back before take-off in Indonesia. Flight 7633 was taxiing in preparation for take-off on Saturday at Surabaya airport – where crashed flight QZ8501 also took off – when a power unit used to start the plane shut down, an airline official said. As a result, the pilot turned back to the gate.

Local media had reported the Bandung-bound plane's engine had cut out after emitting a loud bang that terrified passengers. The plane later landed safely at its destination after undergoing a check.

AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes has lashed out at the media reports, calling the headlines "silly".

7.10AM: The daughter of Captain Iriyanto, pilot of flight QZ8501, has made a televised plea to the public not to blame her father, AFP reports.

"He is just a victim and has not been found yet. My family is now mourning," said Angela Anggi Ranastianis, 22. "As a daughter, I cannot accept it. No pilot will harm his passengers," she said.

7AM: Recap of what happened on Sunday – 34 bodies have been recovered, with nine identified. Experts from Singapore, South Korea and Australia are helping in the identification process. Five major parts of the Airbus A320-200 have been found off the island of Borneo, and search efforts are now focused on locating the tail of the plane, where the black box is.
