PANGKALAN BUN/INDONESIA:
Indonesian divers Wednesday investigated an object believed to be the fuselage of the crashed AirAsia jet and the resting place of most of the victims, after retrieving the black boxes of the plane that went down with 162 people on board.

Scores of divers on Wednesday shifted their focus to investigating an object thought to the jet's main body, which was earlier spotted on sonar scans and is lying about two miles (three kilometres) from where the plane's tail was found.

Search and rescue agency official S.B. Supriyadi said if the object, which is lying about 30 metres (100 feet) under water, turned out to be the fuselage, divers would examine how it could be raised from the water.

"If it is not too heavy, we may lift the whole piece and evacuate the victims," Supriyadi, who is coordinating what has been a huge, international search, told AFP.

"If it's too heavy, we may then swim into the fuselage and pull out the bodies one by one before lifting it."

But he cautioned it would be a complex operation that could take several days.

"Retrieving the main part of the body poses a different challenge to retrieving the black boxes. We are working with larger plane parts and then there's a possibility of victims trapped inside," he said.

Don't know how well they will do today, weather has deteriorated considerably .... guess we'll find out later tonight if they had any success getting near the fuselage and/or engine.

WEDNESDAY, JAN 14

10.36AM: After days of good weather conditions, today's weather appears unfavourable for the search operation: Strong waves, high winds in the search area, according to the meteorological forecast.

FYI everyone be careful of clicking on links regarding Airasia, I came across this article today. It's good advice to follow concerning any breaking news story that is attracting a lot of attention:

Hoax-Slayer posted a warning on Dec. 29 about scammy, malware-ridden Facebook posts falsely claiming to be from CNN, claiming that the plane was found in Tacloban, Philippines, and then invites you to click “Play” to watch video of “breaking news” footage.
At some point in the process, you'll also be offered the chance to download a "video player" riddled with malware. Remember, where any Facebook post is concerned, never to trust any post – even if it appears to be from a legitimate news network – claiming to offer “exclusive” footage nobody else has. (And if CNN — or any other news source — actually does have exclusive footage of some newsworthy event, you'll be able to find it on the actual CNN website, and still don't need to click on any Facebook posts.)

Also remember to never give your phone number to a site demanding it as part of its registration process. And finally, remember that any breaking news story will attract scammers who try using it as bait. The more curiosity you feel about a given story, the more you have to be on guard.

Good to know, thanks! I was almost going to add as a disclaimer to my post that The Straits Times has been very reliable with their breaking news regarding Airasia so far.

With the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) of Indonesia AirAsia Flight QZ8501 recovered yesterday and the location of the fuselage determined, search officials say the priority remains finding those still missing after the Dec 28 crash.

But the mission strength will be gradually reduced, they added.

Now that I have had time to further process this.......I am seriously wondering why anyone is still bothering to find MH370?? based on the metrics offered by Indonesia. The powers that be don't give a fat rats.......fill in the blank about soothing the families and doing right by them at all -- it's just about the boxes?? in this case and potentially about all air disasters from that region ??

This is a public relations disaster and a horror show at the same time. RIP passengers of Air Asia

Do you guys think it's bad that all I'm thinking is "America would have done a much better job. " Does that make me ethnocentric? Like, "America is so much better at this stuff let us take over!"

It doesn't feel right.

This is going to sound harsh, but the way they've handled the aftermath of this tragedy is cringe-worthy. From the staged photo-ops at meetings and with various parts of the plane, the haphazard retrieval methods and handling of the wreckage parts, the lax storage of the wreckage when brought to shore, and their obvious inexperience in dealing with something of this magnitude.

In their effort to save face all they've succeeded in doing is look incompetent. I wince when I come to the thread, wondering what I'm going to read next.

IMO. Rant over.

Is it lonely there, Buckaroo?

I envisioned all of the Australians and miscellaneous others spending time and beacoup $$ looking for MH370 watching the latest comments re AirAsia saying, "whoa---wait a minute -- maybe just maybe we're all getting suckered here. Time for a rethink?" It's a Malaysian problem perhaps.

“In one week, I think we will be getting a reading,” Mardjono Siswosuwarno, head investigator for the National Transportation Safety Committee, told Reuters.

The flight data recorder took only 15 minutes to download ..... Investigators were expected later on Wednesday to begin downloading data from the cockpit voice recorder ....

“We are feeling relieved but there is still a lot of work ahead of us to analyze it,” said Siswosuwarno.

As is standard procedure, the NTSC will file a preliminary report, which will be made public, to the International Civil Aviation Organization within 30 days.

After the recovery of the two black boxes, Indonesia is expected to scale back search and rescue operations in the Java Sea.
But government officials sought to reassure victims’ families that efforts to retrieve the remains of their loved ones would continue.

“I have told (the families) that ending the main operation does not mean ending the search,” Fransiskus Bambang Soelistyo, head of the National Search and Rescue Agency, told reporters in Surabaya late on Tuesday.

“We understand if the search becomes smaller … but the bodies have to be found,” said Frangky Chandry, whose younger brother was on the plane. “We want to bury our family. That’s what we want.”

Meanwhile, multi-national search and rescue (SAR) teams are supporting the Indonesian efforts to evacuate bodies and debris from the bottom of the sea.

AirAsia Indonesia chief executive officer Sunu Widyatmoko today admitted that it had committed “administrative negligence” when requesting a change in its Surabaya-Singapore flight schedule.

He said they had only verbally informed the Transportation Ministry of the change, The Jakarta Post reported.

The request was verbally conveyed to the Air Transportation Ministry’s director-general.

Sunu's statement contradicted his boss Tan Sri Tony Fernandes who last week said they had the rights to fly the route.

A Singapore navy ship has found the fuselage of the AirAsia plane that crashed into the sea late last month with 162 people on board, the city-state's defence chief said on Wednesday.

Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said in a Facebook post he had been informed that one of Singapore's navy ships involved in the search, MV Swift Rescue, "has located the fuselage of the AirAsia plane in the Java Sea".

He said that images taken by a remotely operated vehicle "show part of the wing and words on the fuselage".

Mr Ng's post was accompanied by underwater photos of what appeared to be the fuselage.

The words "now" and "everyone" are visible on the photos, apparently from AirAsia's motto "Now Everyone Can Fly" painted on the plane's exterior.

"We have informed BASARNAS, the Indonesian search authority who can now begin recovery operations," Ng said.

The head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency, Bambang Soelistyo, said the fuselage had been spotted by search teams on Tuesday.

Dr Ng said at about 5.50pm that the Chief of Navy, Rear-admiral Lai Chung Han, "just informed me that one of SAF's ships, the MV Swift Rescue, has located the fuselage of the AirAsia plane in the Java Sea".

"Images taken by the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) show part of the wing and words on the fuselage," he wrote.

this is really good news ...... I hope that the Navy will be involved (more so than you know who SAR) with the competent divers and more seaworthy vessels in case the weather is choppy. I really feel that the families deserve to have their loved ones returned to them quickly --
Thanks for the great update
