I went to Kansas State University and gradated in 2019 (well into my adulthood, I am in my 40s now) and there was open access to every building I entered. I am sure residence halls were not so open, but academic buildings and common areas were open. I was surprised to read here about card entry to an academic building, but maybe some colleges do have this set up. What is to keep someone from swiping their card and multiple people entering with that person? When classes are about to start, it seems unrealistic to have every student swipe a car to enter one at a time.

I work for a large private university and primarily work remote. When I have had to go on campus, it was surprising to me how many areas required keycard entry. There are signs everywhere about not holding the door for someone behind you, not allowing someone to enter with you without scanning etc. I’m sure it still happens but very strong efforts were made for security and safety.

I’m just hearing about this situation and am not completely caught up yet.

John Miller is the go-to guy and he knows his stuff. I always trust his depth of knowledge and his experience.

It is alarming that so many hours have passed and there is no clear video of the suspect.

If all they have is what, a video of his back, is that correct? Then I’d guess they are hoping someone who knows him well could identify him, like Tyler Robinson’s father did.

Hopefully somewhere in all the video is a recognizable gait, or clothing, or a tilt of the head, just anything that would lead to his ID and hopefully capture.

CNN is saying right now that two students are dead but that 8 of the 9 injured are students, which I suppose means the 9th injured may be a professor. I’d originally heard that all 11 victims were students, so to my mind this was not going to be someone with a 10-year grudge against a professor, but now I suppose anything is possible.

This is a VERY long time to keep students on lockdown, which seems to indicate that no one knows where the culprit is at the moment. He could be blended in with students in lockdown, for all we know.

Yes, it sounds like this video is from a distance, and does not show his face. Only people who know this person would be able to identify him from the video, by the sounds of it.

I can't think of a mass shooting where the suspect got away like this. It's almost always over quickly by suicide, police shooting. them, or capture.

It's a bit reminiscent of the Boston Bombing, although those guys had a much more reasonable chance of escape than this guy did.

My sense is that he's gone home, and is no longer a threat. They can't take that chance though.

Some of our buildings also require physical check ins as well. A few recreational buildings also require you to leave your keycard with staff at the check in and can get it back when exiting.

So not a student (any more??) IMO.
It seems a targeted attack on a specific victim who was probably taking an exam.
Focused on exam, not paying attention to anything else.

(By the way,
those who study Engineering or Physics are usually very clever, intelligent people.
Very sensible.)

My youngest 2 kids (22 and 25) are both still in school (Criminology and Engineering) and both of them have classes with folks in their 30's and older. It's not at all uncommon.

The university rep and police rep both said they didn't know/couldn't say what was going on the classroom where the attack occurred; however, NY Times is reporting it was "a final exam review session for a large economics class."

Ok, here is a Brown professor confirming this info. She is an economics professor and the classroom attacked was a final exam review session being taught by one of her TAs.

“Rachel Friedberg, a Brown economics professor, said the mass shooting happened in a review session for the final exam of her Principles of Economics course. She said she learned what happened from a teaching assistant who led the session. Friedberg herself was not present.”

I've been following...with horror. My daughter did her PhD at Brown. Lovely friendly campus, as is Providence.

I agree there's something off about his gait. His right leg moves differently from his left, and I perceived that his right foot leans slightly to the left when he puts the foot down (as though the shoe sole is worn down on that side)

IMO he has a fairly distinctive walk, one that would be anonymous to most everyone but very recognizable to his family or friends. That plus his body type and maybe his jacket should distinguish him. Who knows if his family would, in fact, turn him in or at least call in the tip. Many families won’t.

Hand in his pocket the whole time, so I guess that’s where he is hiding the handgun.

It would be extraordinary if no video anywhere on campus did not capture him from the front, even if he’s wearing a mask.

Looks like an individual who planned his attack and exit carefully.

"How do we have him leaving if we don't have him coming?" Miller seems to think he changed in a bathroom.

Seems like this class was the target. Maybe the professor Rachel Friedberg, too.

He wanted someone to know he was there, with the shouting first, before shooting.

I think the reason he's eluded police is the amount of cover available in the area. It is dark, poorly lit, with a lot of trees and mature, tall, shrubbery. There are a lot of historic homes on large lots, with outbuildings, a lot of trees and extensive shrubbery. The low lighting has been the preferred option, to preserve the historic ambience of the neighborhood. Once the shooter is out of the university building, and away from Thayer Street, it would be exceptionally difficult to find him. There are lots of places to hide. He could have parked a car a few blocks away, and be long gone.

When I lived in the area, there was a lot of crime, especially burglary. There were also occasional muggings. The area is affluent, and this has attracted criminal activity - mainly opportunistic crime. The dark streets contributed to the problem.
