Possibly an engineering student who was not doing well in his studies?

JMVHO.

The shooter might go shoot at someplace else. He left on foot according to press conference.

JMVHO.
My leading theory right now. Hopefully we learn more in the coming hours.

Might be a former romantic partner of someone in the building or a stalker. Or a professor who got fired for harassment.

  • #49
Suspect NOT in custody. Shelter-in-place remains.

John Miller CNN:

Key is going to be the video canvas. Video cameras from inside the building, video cameras outside the building, and then video of him earlier at another location.

This will be key. Once they have an image they'll want to get it out as soon as possible.

They'll be interviewing victims at hospital if they are able to talk, and interviewing people who were in the area.

"Did he say anything?" "Did he target specific people?"

"Authorities say they’re still searching for the shooter,
who was described as a male dressed in black,
but few details were immediately available about the suspect.

The shooting happened at an engineering and physics building
where multiple exams were scheduled this afternoon,
according to the school.

One student said
he hid under his desk for two hours waiting for police to clear the building."

Reporting from Providence, R.I.
Police cruisers with high-powered search lights are slowly patrolling streets in the College Hill neighborhood, near the campus building where the shooting happened. Officers peered into parked cars with flashlights and lights mounted to shotguns, searching for the gunman.

"Mom of Brown University student reveals terrifying text she received from son.

A mother of a Brown student said her son texted her a final goodbye
before hiding in a closet.

She said
that her son and his classmates were studying for finals in the library
when she got the following text:

'Mom, there's a live shooting on campus,
I'm going to run, I love you'.

She said they've only been texting and she's getting live updates from him.

'We told him not to make a single sound.
He's in a supply closet room,
barricaded with 12 students,
They turned off the lights,
they put chairs on their door.

One of his classmates is having a panic attack
so the friends are trying to keep her quiet
so no sounds are being made'."

Watching local coverage here in Massachusetts.

Rhode Island hospital saying that 6 are critical/stable, one is critical, and one is stable.

I lived in Rhode Island for much of my life, including the College Hill neighborhood where the shooting occurred. One thing about the neighborhood is that it is very suburban, with a lot of trees, dense shrubbery and buildings on large lots. Many of the streets are quite dark at night. Once the suspect fled on Hope Street, he could easily conceal himself on many of the dark side streets or heavily planted lots. He might have parked his car on a dark side street, and driven away. The main thoroughfare that abuts and cuts through the Brown campus is Thayer Street, where there are a lot of businesses and well lit areas. I believe that's where the ambulances are parked. I think the area provides a lot of opportunity for concealment, especially away from Thayer Street.

I have not been to the building for a long time, but Barus and Holley was a substantial building, and has multiple exits and entrances. It has been renovated since my last visit, and I don't know how it is configured today. All Brown University buildings had security arrangements, but I am not sure what they are like today.

I should also say that Rhode Island gun laws are more stringent than those of many US states. Private sales are effectively outlawed, and sales of firearms are also reviewed by local police. Permits to carry a firearms concealed are not readily issued, and involve stringent checks. It will be interesting to find out the identity of the shooter and how they obtained a firearm.

John Miller on CNN again:

Talking about the 17 minute delay between the 911 call, and the alert that went out to students. May have been influenced by these swatting calls that have been going on lately.

220,000 square feet building. 117 laboratory classrooms, 3 lecture halls. 7 stories high.

It took police considerable time to clear that building.

No one had to swipe because of exams. Anyone could have accessed that building.

News to me: EMS and firefighters were dressed like swat team members and went in with police before the building was cleared. Go into the danger zone with police and get to victims as quickly as possible. I think this went a long way towards saving lives.

I think someone from his initial point of contact will be able to identify him.
