RI - Mass Shooting at Brown University - Providence 13 Dec 2025

He’s a pretty cool customer. He’s walking calmly and confidently. He’s not running and jumping the wall or anything.

That gait should provoke some tips.

Also looks like a white badge on the right arm of his jacket.

I googled the distance between the location he was apprehended and Brown University and it's roughly 18 miles on I95. So this person either doesn't live in the area and had a hotel, or does live in the area and didn't want to go home after. Odd if he isn't from the area that he stayed so close instead of getting further away.

This makes me wonder if he took an uber or something vs having a vehicle to get away in. I would think he would want to get as far away as possible.

No more info it seems, just that a person of interest is in custody and lots of praising various agencies involved in make this happen. No name, not saying if he is connected to Brown University, they are not looking for anyone else at this time.

Coventry is an interesting choice for a hotel. In my opinion, I think it’s where someone would go if they wanted to get out of Providence and to somewhere more “rural” or “country” in RI. I say this in quotation marks because you’re never truly that rural or far from Providence anywhere in RI.

What is your take on why this person chose that location for a hotel? Maybe they had the hotel before the shooting and just went back to it. If they had a car and drove to the shooting, it does seem odd to stay that close. If they didn't have a car and took an Uber, then I wonder if that driver called it in because the video was not released for like 8 or so hours so he had plenty of time to get away before anyone knew what the gunman looked like.

Edited to add: looks like there is a bus system that runs from Providence to Coventry. Perhaps he took a bus.

Shooting took place in Engineering building.

Per press

RBBM

Praying he is okay; please keep us posted.
Thank you so much. He is an engineering major and was in the building when it happened. He is shaken, but not physically injured. There is a video of him and his friends/classmates being found by police circulating. It’s hard to watch and to see the sheer terror in all of their faces. Thank you again for everything. This is why websleuths means so much to me. Just good people who want to help.

ABC News said the person in custody is not a Brown University student. The person was taken into custody based on a tip to law enforcement, a source with knowledge about the investigation told ABC News.

"Based on a tip". Looking forward to hearing more. Did someone recognize the gunman from the video? Or was this a situation where the gunman told someone his plan? Online postings?

Very impressed they got him overnight and relieved the students were able to be released from lock down. Glad no one else was hurt.

Bus service is very limited in RI, especially at night. I don't think there is any bus service to the area in Coventry off Route 95 where there are hotels. These are chain hotels where access is by car. He would have needed a car. I think using a ride share service to this location would be unusual. Coventry is south of Providence, an area that has a rural ambience.

The shooter may have traveled from elsewhere to do this. Perhaps this was an attack on the professor, who wasn't actually present.

Thankful he is safe.

These acts of violence harm and affect so many people, not just the physcially-injured victims.

The shooting happened just after 4pm though so would buses be running in the hour or so after that?

The area where there are hotels is a development named the Centre of New England. There are free standing stores, including a Walmart and a BJ'S, some restaurants, including a Cracker Barrel, and a group of low rise condominiums. There's a bus that goes there, but I don't think there's any weekend service. There's no direct service from Providence, either. I think that a rider has to transfer at least once if they're going from Providence.

As an educator and a parent, I will never understand how this type of violence continues unchecked. I checked in with my kids at their colleges last night. They are doing their day-to-day getting ready for finals. I can't even imagine one time but two times is unspeakable tragedy.

At least two of the Brown University students who were on campus when a deadly shooting unfolded there on Saturday have survived school shootings before.

A TA and 60 students were in a large classroom when the shooter entered, yelled and started shooting. A third of the students and the TA were able to hide behind a desk, another third ran out of the room, but the rest seated in the middle couldn't escape and were hit the hardest. It doesn't appear that a teacher was targeted.
