Russia Attacks Ukraine - 23 Feb 2022 #15

  • The Russian Ministry of Defense's (MoD) Main Military-Political Directorate Deputy Head and Akhmat Spetsnaz Commander, Major General Apti Alaudinov, described recent Russian deception tactics that may amount to acts of perfidy — a war crime under the Geneva Convention.

Is he actually being critical of their own tactics? I had to read that a few times, as well as look up some info about Apti Alaudinov.

Last year he was described as .... The commander of the Chechen Akhmat battalion, the 51-year-old general-major Apti Alaudinov, is well known in the war chronicles of the past two and a half years as one of the main protagonists of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Alaudinov, the new Chechen Prigožin

He also has a Telegram account with over 300,000 followers, speaks a lot of propaganda.

And he is saying ..... recent Russian deception tactics that may amount to acts of perfidy — a war crime under the Geneva Convention.

I had to look up perfidy, as well.
In the context of war, perfidy is a form of deceptive tactic where one side pretends to act in good faith, such as signaling a truce (e.g., raising a white flag), but does so with the deliberate intention of breaking that promise. (Link)

Key Takeaways:
  • Russia and Ukraine have not formally announced the implementation of the temporary long-range strikes ceasefire.
  • Official American, Ukrainian, and Russian statements indicate that the parties to the ceasefire have not yet finalized the details of the agreement.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin is adding confusion about the timing and details of the ceasefire in an attempt to falsely blame Ukraine for violating the ceasefire before both countries have officially implemented the agreement.
  • The Kremlin continues to contradict Trump's report of his call with Putin on March 18.
  • The Kremlin continues to demand that Ukraine cede Ukrainian territory that Russia does not currently occupy and to set conditions to make further territorial demands.
  • The United States, Ukraine, and Europe continue to agree that Ukraine and Europe must be involved in peace negotiations to end the war, despite Russian President Vladimir Putin's efforts to exclude Ukraine and Europe from such negotiations.
  • Ukraine and Russia conducted a prisoner of war (POW) exchange on March 19.
  • Ukrainian forces recently advanced in Belgorod Oblast and near Pokrovsk, and Russian forces recently advanced near Chasiv Yar, Toretsk, Pokrovsk, and Velyka Novosilka.
  • Russian milbloggers argued that the Russian government should give military awards and social benefits to military instructors and Russian defense industrial base (DIB) employees.

The map visual is helpful.. always.
I hope you keep your source for future postings of changes............
thanks.

Last night, Ukrainian drones struck Engels-2, the home base of Russian strategic bombers that regularly launch missiles at Ukraine.

The Engels-2 base, located some 600 km from Ukraine, is home to Tu-95MS and other strategic bombers.Regional authorities confirmed the evacuation of people near the airfield. Meanwhile, OSINT data indicate the strike targeted the base’s ammunition depot.

Three Tu-95MS and two Tu-160 bombers were stationed at Engels, Telegram channel ExileNova+ says, adding that in the morning, an Il-76 likely arrived with a new batch of Kh-101 missiles for the strategic bombers. The strike and secondary detonations scattered debris across a 5 km radius, raising the likelihood of damage to the aircraft.

Russian strikes on Ukraine do not stop, despite their propaganda claims. Every day and every night, nearly a hundred or more drones are launched, along with ongoing missile attacks. With each such launch, the Russians expose to the world their true attitude towards peace.

Yet always—even under the most difficult conditions—our people can count on the immediate support of the State Emergency Service personnel, police officers, medics, utility workers, and all those who help to clear the rubble, extinguish fires, restore the destroyed, and most importantly, save and protect lives.

Last night, the Russians launched nearly 200 "Shahed" drones and decoy UAVs. A massive attack on the Kirovohrad region left 10 people wounded, including four children, and caused damage to homes, a church, and infrastructure.

I thank everyone who works on the ground and helps to eliminate the consequences of Russian terror. We thank those who are always on duty, at the forefront of saving lives. Everyone whose work is a pillar of strength for all of us, something that allows us to continue fighting and living, no matter what.

UK to host closed meeting on Ukraine peacekeeping force

Britain convenes military officials from over 20 countries to advance Ukraine peacekeeping plans, despite Putin's opposition.

In 1994, Ukraine gave up the THIRD-LARGEST nuclear arsenal — for a promise. A promise of security guarantees.

Today, it fights for survival with Western military aid that’s ever in peril.

The White House has said that US ownership of Ukraine's nuclear power plants was discussed during yesterday's Trump-Zelensky phone call - though the Ukrainian president later said the suggestion was only made about the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia facility.

Following the call between the two presidents, Washington's top diplomat Marco Rubio said "American ownership of those plants would be the best protection for that infrastructure and support for Ukrainian energy infrastructure".

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, in southern Ukraine, is the largest in Europe. Russian forces seized it shortly after launching their February 2022 full-scale invasion and have occupied it ever since, alongside most of the Zaporizhzhia region.

The facility stopped generating power in 2022, but needs a constant supply of electricity to cool one of its reactors which is in a state of "hot conservation", meaning it is not fully offline.

France to issue 20-page 'survival manual' to citizens

France is set to issue a survival manual to households across the country, warning citizens how to respond to an invasion or any other 'imminent threat.'

The dramatic move comes as tensions rise in Europe and fears grow over Russia's aggressive tactics.

The new 20-page booklet, reportedly packed with 63 measures, will advise the French on how to protect themselves and their families in the event of armed conflict, natural disasters, industrial accidents or even a nuclear leak.

The US government has defunded one programme and left another that both document alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

The Trump administration cut funding for Yale University's Humanitarian Research Lab (HRL), which had detailed the mass deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia.

It has also withdrawn from a multinational group meant to investigate the leaders responsible for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, including President Vladimir Putin.

These moves come after Trump spoke with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate a ceasefire in Ukraine, breaking with the previous US administration's approach to try and hold Putin responsible for the Russian invasion.

EU ready to impose more sanctions on Russia after summit talks

Show of unity marred by Viktor Orbán refusing to back declaration of support for Ukraine

EU leaders – apart from Hungary’s Viktor Orbán – say they are ready to increase pressure on Russia through further sanctions, as summit talks exposed a geographical divide on rearming Europe.

Zelenskyy says no discussion with Trump on US ownership of Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

Zelenskyy also gets asked about the prospects of US ownership of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station or any other energy assets.

He replies saying that “all nuclear power plans belong to the people of Ukraine,” owned by state, and get paid by Ukraine, even as it is “temporarily occupied” by Russia.

He then goes into details of problems with the plant and its cooling after the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam, which pose questions over “very severe technical conditions.”

He also pushes back on suggestion the plant could change ownership, repeatedly saying he discussed with Trump “how to find the solution from the situation and … take the station from the Russians,” with options for the US to be involved in modernising or developing it further, but “the issue of property, we did not discuss.”

He further says there was no discussion on other plants.

It is being reported that Zelenskyy has rejected the US proposal (and Russia's conditions for a "peace deal").

Mr Zelensky also ruled out the Trump administration's suggestion of the US taking control of Ukraine's nuclear power plants.

UK to host closed meeting on Ukraine peacekeeping force

Britain convenes military officials from over 20 countries to advance Ukraine peacekeeping plans, despite Putin's opposition.

Our ABC is now reporting that these talks have been held at the UK's permanent joint facility just outside London - a highly secret defence facility which allows no reporters near the place.

The talks were strategic talks. Australia, NZ, Canada, Ukraine's European allies have all expressed willingness to help, and today's meeting was military experts putting their heads together to discuss how this would work in practice. How many troops, who would enforce rules of engagement on the ground.

It is unclear at this stage how the talks went. But that was the purpose of the talks.

British warfare expert, Tim Willasey-Wilsey, says that Putin is not going to allow peacekeeping forces onto the soil of Ukraine.

Russia and Ukraine exchange aerial attacks amid ceasefire confusion

Moscow launches airstrikes and drone attacks and Kyiv hits Russian airbase as terms of proposed ceasefire remain

Russia and Ukraine exchanged aerial assaults overnight amid uncertainty over the timing and terms of a limited US-brokered ceasefire agreed this week.

Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said Russia had launched nearly 200 Iranian Shahed drones overnight, wounding at least 10 people, including four children, and damaging “residential buildings, a church, and infrastructure”.

“Russia’s strikes on Ukraine continue despite its propagandistic statements … With each launch, the Russians show the world their true attitude toward peace,” Zelenskyy said in a morning statement on Telegram.

Russian forces also struck a village in the Sumy region and carried out a series of airstrikes on a town near the city of Kharkiv.

Ukraine launched its own mass drone attack on Russia, appearing to hit an airfield near a key airbase about 435 miles (700 km) from the frontlines.

'If It Walks Like A Duck': Former Tory Minister Defends Claim Trump Could Be 'Russian Asset'

Graham Stuart said "it's hard not to have it as a possibility" given the US president's attitude towards Ukraine.

He said: “We have to consider the possibility that President Trump is a Russian asset.

“If so, Trump’s acquisition is the crowning achievement of [Vladimir] Putin’s FSB career – and Europe is on its own.”

OK I am not a verified historian, and actually think that those who study too much history are doomed to repeat it, however I think the idea of NATO and the US paying a lot, was to avoid nuclear proliferation and to give the US control. US used to believe that less nukes in the world was safer (as opposed to every country having lots) and now we have people beating their plow shares into swords. IMO.
