Russia Attacks Ukraine - 23 Feb 2022 #15

Starting in the evening, Russia attacked regions of Ukraine with over two hundred strike drones and decoy drones. Guided aerial bombs were also used. Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kyiv, Khmelnytskyi, and Chernihiv regions came under fire.

As a result of the massive strikes by the occupiers on the Odesa region, fires broke out in a shopping mall and several stores, and a residential building was damaged. Three children were injured. In Zaporizhzhia, six people were injured by Russian aerial bombs, including a 4-year-old child. Ordinary houses and vehicles were damaged. In these and all other affected regions, assistance is being provided to the victims. Emergency services are on the scene and working.

It is joint pressure on Russia, along with tougher sanctions and stronger defense support for our country, that paves the way to ending this kind of terror and Russia’s prolongation of the war. We expect real pressure on Russia from the United States, Europe, and all our partners. This is what will enable diplomacy to work.

I thank all our partners who understand this and continue to help Ukraine, every man and woman in our Defense Forces for their constant protection of our people, and everyone who defends and saves Ukrainians from terror.

Today, we began the day with President of the Czech Republic Petr Pavel @prezidentpavel and our meeting in Moshchun, Kyiv region – a place that is both symbolic and deeply memorable for all of us in Ukraine.

The battles for Moshchun against the Russian occupiers played a crucial role in the defense of Kyiv, and therefore the defense of our entire country.

Together, we honored the memory of our fallen warriors who fought for Ukraine’s freedom, and expressed our gratitude to all the heroes — thanks to whom we are here today – in Ukrainian Kyiv, in our independent state. And it will always be this way – we will definitely preserve Ukraine’s independence.

Russia-Ukraine Prisoner Exchange Brings Home 175 Ukrainian POWs, Greeted By Tearful Families

Amid tears and grins, 175 Ukrainian soldiers returned home March 19 -- some of whom had been held in Russian prisons for nearly three years. Ukraine returned an equal number of Russian POWs in a deal worked out between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone. An additional 22 gravely wounded Ukrainian soldiers were returned by Russia in what it described as a goodwill gesture.

Russian Shahed Drone Hit A Ukrainian Hospital Hours After Trump-Putin Ceasefire Talks

A Russian Shahed drone attack struck a hospital in Sumy, northeastern Ukraine, on March 19, just hours after Trump-Putin ceasefire talks. The latest attack forced the evacuation of dozens of patients, though no injuries were reported. Witnesses described the explosion, fire, and damage, with some assisting in rescuing critically ill patients. The strike occurred amid intensified fighting in the region, raising skepticism about the ceasefire Ukraine negotiations. Locals expressed distrust toward Russian forces and condemned the ongoing war, questioning the sincerity of peace discussions. Despite the attack, the hospital remains operational.

Massive Russian Drone Attack Sets Fire To Odesa

Russian forces launched a massive drone attack on Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odesa late on March 20, injuring three people and damaging a high-rise apartment building and a shopping center, according to the regional governor, Oleh Kiper. He said there had been strikes in three locations that triggered fires, while three districts of the city were suffering from power cuts.

There are a couple of Ukraine stories in this list on “Trump Tyranny Tracker—Day 60.” This helpful list is posted every day and provides “key news from the day alongside ongoing developments as Trump and his regime move swiftly to consolidate power, undermine democracy, and dismantle civil rights and freedoms.” Definitely worth reading daily IMO.

The mail are going with Russia involved in the fire, quell surprise.Mind what ever the cause it shows a vulnerability to not have a back up, maybe a diesel ?

Wrong again.

Germany approves $ 3.2bn of new military aid to Ukraine for 2025

Germany will provide Ukraine with IRIS-T air defense systems as part of a newly approved $3,2 bn military aid package for 2025, German government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit said

Ukraine has brought back over 4,000 prisoners of war from Russian captivity since start of full-scale invasion, Zelensky says.

Ukraine has been engaging with foreign partners and international organizations to return Ukrainian citizens home.

Today, during our meeting with Czech President Petr Pavel @prezident_pavel, we discussed the situation on the frontline and the overall course of the war. We also spoke about joint European efforts to provide security guarantees for Ukraine.

I thank the Czech Republic for its readiness to work within the framework of the “coalition of the willing.” We understand that together we must apply pressure on the aggressor to achieve a dignified peace. We also discussed defense production—we must implement all mutually beneficial projects.

The Czech Republic has welcomed hundreds of thousands of our people, and we have reached an agreement to open a Unity Center for Ukrainians in Prague. It is truly necessary. Thank you.

We also appreciate the Czech Republic's humanitarian work with Ukraine, support for our regions and cities—in the Dnipro, Kharkiv, Kryvyi Rih, and Lviv regions. Czech projects are present everywhere.

Thank you, for your visit and cooperation. Today, we signed a Joint Statement on Strategic Partnership between our states. It reflects the real level of our relations. Thank you for this. Thank you for the Czech initiative and for all the help to our people.

I welcome Germany’s strong decision to support Ukraine with an additional €3 billion in funding for defense needs for 2025, and nearly €8.25 billion for the following years (2026–2029). This will include air defense, artillery, drones, armored vehicles, demining equipment, and more. As always, Germany is providing exactly what Ukraine needs most—what saves Ukrainian lives.

This means contracts with the German defense industry will now be signed for future—a significant step toward building long-term security guarantees. It is also a recognition that Ukraine’s army will become even stronger after the war ends, and Germany is committed to contributing to that.I’m grateful to the German people and all the democratic forces who contributed to this decision. My sincere thanks to Chancellor Olaf Scholz
@Bundeskanzler and @_FriedrichMerz, winner of the recent German elections.

Germany has already provided enormous support to Ukraine and continues to demonstrate leadership in defending the values of normal life and the value of human life itself. Everything we are doing now to stop Russia’s aggression will also serve as a foundation for long-term security guarantees in the future.

For over three years now, almost throughout this entire war, our Coordination Headquarters has been working—all the services that bring prisoners home. We have already successfully brought back more than four thousand people—4306. And we will bring them all back.

Now, when discussing ways to end the war with the American side and our other partners, we speak about the release of prisoners as one of the first steps. We believe that this absolutely must happen. I thank all our partners who support us in this effort. And everyone in Ukraine and around the world—all those who keep the issue of prisoners on the information agenda.

I thank the teamwork of the Office of the President, the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, the Security Service, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ombudsman, and all others involved, whose efforts bring Ukrainians home.

We always bring our people back, and this is one of the most important principles of our state. That’s how it is, and that’s how it will be.

"Mr Trump has now been in office for more than two months and the penny may be beginning to drop in the White House that trying to end a conflict as bitter and complex as this may take time.

First, the president's belief in the power of his personal, one-on-one diplomacy may have been misplaced.

Second, the Russian president has made it clear he does not intend to be rushed.

Third, the US strategy of directing its initial focus on Ukraine may have been misjudged.

Fourth, the sheer complexity of the conflict makes any resolution hard.

Fifth, the US focus on the economic benefits of a ceasefire distracted attention from the priority of ending the fighting."

A contract to divide up land in Ukraine is being “negotiated as we speak”, the US president, who has spoken to presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky in the past week, told reporters on Friday.

It is not clear who is involved in the apparent negotiations, but US officials are set to meet with both Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Saudi Arabia next week.

Oh my, that makes me ill. Ukraine needs its land back and Russia needs to get out. Any deal between Russia and the US isn't work a pile of coon shift.

Maybe Trump could give Ukraine a few US states to compensate for wanting Ukraine to give up their land to Russia.

If we are going to be ridiculous, let's be ridiculous all the way.

The Kremlin is weaponizing ongoing ceasefire negotiations and deliberately misrepresenting the status and terms of a future ceasefire agreement in order to delay and undermine negotiations for a settlement to the war. The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) claimed on March 21 that Ukrainian forces blew up the Sudzha gas distribution station in Kursk Oblast while withdrawing on the night of March 20 to 21 in order to discredit Russian President Vladimir Putin's "peace initiatives" and to provoke Russia.[1] The Ukrainian General Staff denied the Russian MoD's claim and stated that Russian forces shelled the station, causing a fire.[2] The Ukrainian General Staff warned that Russian authorities are attempting to mislead the international community and discredit Ukraine. Footage published on March 21 shows a fire at the station, although ISW cannot independently verify the cause of the fire.[3] Russian officials seized on the fire to claim falsely that Ukrainian forces violated the proposed 30-day ceasefire banning Russian and Ukrainian strikes on civilian and energy facilities, which is not yet formally in effect and terms of which remain disputed.[4] Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov claimed that Russian forces are "implementing" an order from Putin to refrain from striking Ukrainian energy infrastructure in accordance with the US ceasefire proposal.[5] Russian milbloggers observed that the ceasefire proposal has not come into force yet, however, and acknowledged that Russia has continued nightly strikes on Ukraine, including Ukraine's port infrastructure in Odesa Oblast, in recent days.[6] Founder of the Kremlin-awarded Rybar telegram channel, Mikhail Zvinchuk, recently published a video of himself mocking US officials for believing that Russia is currently or intends to commit to the proposed temporary ceasefire in the area.[7] The exact contours of Putin's supposed order or a future moratorium on energy and infrastructure strikes between Russia and Ukraine remain unclear as of this report.

Kremlin officials are leveraging narratives about Ukrainian strikes and combat operations in Russian territory to justify rejecting peace negotiations with Ukraine and continuing the war to a domestic Russian audience. Peskov claimed in reaction to the Sudzha gas distribution station fire that Ukraine's denial of blowing up the station "shows how much one can believe and trust" Ukrainian officials.[8] Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Spokesperson Maria Zakharova asked how the United States will "manage" Ukraine given Ukraine's alleged violation of the moratorium on energy infrastructure strikes (that has yet to be finalized and implemented).[9] Zakharova's and Peskov's comments are an effort to revive the narrative that Ukraine is the aggressor in this war, that Ukraine only acts under guidance or pressure from the West, and that the war in Ukraine is an existential risk to the Russian state to which Russia must respond.[10] Russian authorities have also revived narratives accusing Ukrainian forces of targeting Russian nuclear power plants and committing war crimes against Russian civilians to undermine Ukraine's credibility and heighten the invented existential threat to domestic audiences. The Russian Investigative Committee published a summary on March 21 of ongoing criminal investigations, cases, and convictions of Ukrainian soldiers and high-level commanders for allegedly targeting the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and civilians in strikes.[11] ISW recently assessed that the Kremlin was preparing to intensify narratives accusing Ukrainian forces of war crimes in Kursk Oblast to discredit the Ukrainian military, erode Western support for Ukraine, and spoil or delay talks about temporary ceasefire proposals.[12]

"Russia inflicted unimaginable suffering on millions of Ukrainian children and violated their rights since its full scale invasion of Ukraine begun in 2022, a new report by the United Nations Human Rights Office said on Friday.

In the four regions of Ukraine that were illegally annexed by the Russian Federation in 2022, children have been particularly affected by violations of international human rights law...including summary executions, arbitrary detention, conflict-related sexual violence, torture and ill-treatment", the report said.

Five boys and two girls were summarily executed in 2022 and 2023, with the report noting that the willful killing of civilians was a war crime and a grave breach of the Geneva Conventions.

More than 600 children were killed between 24 February 2022 and 31 December 2024 in Ukraine ...... At least 737,000 children had been internally displaced and a further 1.7 million were refugees."

South Korea's Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul said on Saturday that military cooperation between North Korea and Russia must stop, and North Korea should not be rewarded for its wrongdoings in the course of bringing about the end of the war in Ukraine.

Cho also said it is important for South Korea, Japan and China to faithfully carry out UN sanctions against North Korea, and to put efforts into stopping North Korean provocations and bring about its complete denuclearisation.

"Western military planning to enforce a potential ceasefire in Ukraine is set to intensify in London next week as Downing Street said "nothing is off the table" over possible troop deployment for Kyiv.

Officials from the so-called coalition of the willing will "accelerate the pace and scale" of work to consolidate proposals for possible troop deployment across land, air or sea to safeguard any peace deal, a No 10 spokesman said.

It comes after Sir Keir Starmer warned Vladimir Putin would face "severe consequences" for breaching any truce ..... "

Talks on Ukraine peacekeepers will accelerate next week, with 'nothing off the table'

Typical Russian move can't take control destroy..that's all they know to do. The peace talks won't work that's not what Russia wants. Russians have wanted it back to the ussr years where they controlled the whole area. Kyiv was a Ukrainian city before Russia was a thought.
