Tragically, three-year-old Tymofii died in the hospital today. Seven-year-old Radyslav. Arina, who will forever be seven as well. Nine-year-old Herman. Fifteen-year-old Danylo. Fifteen-year-old Mykyta. Fifteen-year-old Alina. Kostiantyn, who will forever be sixteen. Nikita – seventeen. These are the children killed by a Russian ballistic missile strike on Kryvyi Rih. There were only a few minutes after the missile was launched from the enemy’s Taganrog area. Unfortunately, nine adults were also killed. My condolences to all the families and loved ones.

The missile struck right at the ordinary street with residential buildings, a playground, shops, and a restaurant around. Sixty-two people were injured in the attack, including twelve children. Some of them are in critical condition, they are currently in the hospitals. Doctors are doing everything possible to save lives.

In addition to that ballistic missile, the Russians launched attack drones against Kryvyi Rih yesterday during the rescue operation – in time of such grief for people. The drone attack injured seven people. One person was killed. There is simply no deeper level of cynicism, vileness, or hatred toward people than what Russia embodies today.

It is critically important not to leave this Russian strike on civilians, on the city – every such strike – without a response from the world. Kryvyi Rih and all of Ukraine have already been supported by many yesterday and today. I am grateful for the principled stance of the foreign ministers of the Czech Republic, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Austria. I thank the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy for her position and support. We value the principled statements made by the Embassies of Japan, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Germany. Unfortunately, the response from the U.S. Embassy is surprisingly disappointing – such a strong country, such a strong people, and yet such a weak reaction. They are afraid to even say the word “Russian” when speaking about the missile that murdered children.

Yes, the war must end. But to end it, we must not be afraid to call things by their names. We must not be afraid to pressure the one who continues this war and ignores all the world’s proposals to end it. We must pressure Russia – the one choosing to kill children instead of choosing a ceasefire. There must be additional sanctions against those who cannot exist without ballistic strikes on their neighboring nation. We must do everything in our capacity to save lives.

And we have discussed this, in particular with the American side, the additional air defense systems supply to defend against precisely these types of missile attacks. We count on our agreements with the President of the United States, who promised to help find more Patriots. And we count on the strength of the world to overcome this evil – this war, this Russian aggression.

Only through strength and coordinated action with partners can we stop the killing, save the lives of children, and establish lasting peace. I thank everyone who stands with Ukraine – from the very beginning of this war, and especially on such tragic days.

Eternal memory to all our people whose lives were taken by Russian strikes.

US Ambassador to Ukraine commented on the missile strike on Kryvyi Rih, that killed nine children, but omitted mentioning Russia's responsibility.

Brink expressed being "horrified" by the Russian attack on a children's playground and restaurant but only added: "This is why this war needs to end."

In her previous posts about attacks on Ukrainian civilians or energy infrastructure she named Russia as responsible.

“It is time for you to leave the United States,” the department wrote Thursday to some Ukrainians in a “notice of termination of parole,” which was obtained by CNN. It added that their parole will expire in seven days and issued a warning: “Do not attempt to remain in the United States — the federal government will find you.”

“Staying silent about the fact that it is Russia killing children with ballistic missiles is wrong and dangerous. It only emboldens the scum in Moscow to continue the war and keep ignoring diplomacy. Weakness has never ended a war,” he stressed.

Zelenskyy emphasized that “Russia must be held accountable for everything it has done. To end this war, it is necessary to put pressure on them – real pressure – without wasting time on empty talk.”

According to the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), this apparent attempt to mislead Western audiences comes as US officials warn they may implement additional sanctions if Russia continues to drag out peace talks.

Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), made several statements during interviews with Fox News and Newsmax on 3 April that significantly diverge from official Russian positions, creating what ISW describes as a deceptive parallel negotiating track apparently aimed at American audiences.

Recent reports indicate that Russian forces have sustained around 3,000 casualties in trying to take Bilohorivka in a period of just ten months, including 1,543 killed, 1,455 wounded, and 15 captured. However, as fighting over Bilohorivka has been ongoing for over 2 years, the total number of Russian losses is undoubtedly much higher. These staggering losses reflect the intensity of the combat and the high price the Russians paid for mere positional gains over the past 2 years.

... Despite relentless assaults and thousands of losses, Russian forces have been unable to secure control over the village. This enduring stalemate highlights the resilience and tactical ability of Ukrainian defenders, whose geographical knowledge and steadfast determination continue to thwart Russian advances, exacting a heavy toll on the enemy.

Russia actively tries to recruit civilians in Ukraine to spy on military targets and carry out terrorist attacks throughout the country. On April 3, at least one person was killed in a Kyiv explosion.

The Base is a neo-Nazi terrorist group established in 2018. The group's leader, Rinaldo Nazzaro, is a U.S. citizen who now lives in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Nazzaro is a former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Pentagon employee.

Earlier, explosions were heard in Kyiv at around 2:12 a.m., a Kyiv Independent journalist reported.

Russian attacks have been ongoing throughout the country overnight. The Air Force earlier mentioned missiles approaching Southern Ukraine at 1:43 a.m.

Russia has regularly targeted civilian infrastructure since the onset of its full-scale war against Ukraine in February 2022.

According to the April 5 evening report by the General Staff, 152 military encounters were recorded since the start of the day.

“The most intense situation is in Pokrovsk, Lyman, Toretsk and Kursk directions,” the General Staff wrote.

Sixty-five clashes were reported near Pokrovsk alone.

According to Ukraine’s Armed Forces, Russia carried out 73 air strikes, dropping 106 guided bombs and using 844 kamikaze drones.

The dapper investment envoy to Russian president Vladimir Putin, who also serves as a key negotiator for Moscow on Ukraine, posted an image of his flight plan on social media to make the point that a senior sanctioned Russian official was being welcomed by the Trump administration. Otherwise, details of what was discussed remain opaque.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said Hungary is on "Putin's team" in an interview with German outlet Rheinische Post, published on April 5.

Stripping Hungary of its voting power in the EU "is getting closer and closer," Tsahkna said.

"Article 7 of the Treaty on European Union provides for the possibility of withdrawing a member state's voting rights if membership endangers the security of Europe and that of the other members.... (T)hat's exactly what (Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor) Orban is doing," Tsahkna said.

The group, known as The Base, was founded in 2018 and operates through a global network. It has become the subject of an FBI investigation, which has resulted in several arrests and the organization’s official designation as a terrorist group.

“Now, with the Trump administration pulling the FBI from pursuing the far right, the Base, left unchecked, is trying to export its violence abroad,” the report says.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for stronger international pressure on Russia, pointing to escalating military strikes on civilian infrastructure that continue to claim innocent lives across Ukraine.

“The pressure on Russia is still insufficient, and daily Russian attacks on Ukraine prove this,” Zelensky stated in his latest video address. “The number of aerial assaults is increasing. This is how Russia reveals its true intentions – to continue terrorizing as long as the world allows it.”

“Every strike is against our people, our children. They are waging war against children playing on playgrounds,” he emphasized. “These attacks are Putin’s response to all international diplomatic efforts.”

Russia hit Kyiv with a missile strike at dawn, killing one person and injuring two or three others. Fires broke out in multiple districts:
  • Darnytskyi: A building destroyed & 3 cars caught fire
  • Obolon: An office center partially collapsed, fire spread to a warehouse
  • Solomianskyi: Multiple open fires & a warehouse damaged
An air raid alert was issued across Ukraine. Poland stepped up its defense, as they regularly do when Russia attacks Ukraine, but many in Ukraine are calling it a theater.

Two more Ukrainian children have been rescued from Russian-occupied territories, each bearing the scars of life under occupation.

14-year-old Kateryna, born with a heart condition, was denied medical care because she was Ukrainian. Pressured to accept a Russian passport, she watched as her father was forced to sign a contract with the Russian army. Her parents were threatened - if they resisted, their children would be taken and sent to a distant camp. When Kateryna suffered a nervous breakdown, she was assigned an FSB “psychologist”.

16-year-old Oleksii was reprimanded at his school in the occupied territories for writing Ukrainian letters in Russian words. Then came forced military registration. Some of his classmates were taken to an enlistment office and threatened with conscription into the Russian army. His best friend and her entire family were deported to distant Siberia and permanently banned from returning home.

Now, they are free. But their stories remain a testament to what they endured.

Today’s Russian attack included missiles launched from the waters of the Black Sea. Our partners know exactly which vessels were involved and from which part of the sea the launch occurred. This is one of the reasons why Russia is distorting diplomacy, why it is refusing to agree to an unconditional ceasefire: they want to preserve their ability to strike our cities and ports from the sea.

A ceasefire at sea is not just about free navigation and the export of food products — it is, above all, about overall security and bringing peace closer.

Putin does not want to end the war — he is looking for ways to preserve the option of reigniting it at any moment, with even greater force. That’s exactly why all forms of pressure on Russia must continue: strengthening our ability to defend ourselves, maintaining sanctions, and ensuring that diplomacy — any conversation with Moscow — leaves no opportunity to kill.

If there is a ceasefire, it must be unconditional — one that does not allow for the destruction of life. Ukraine has agreed to the United States’ proposal of a full, unconditional ceasefire. Putin is refusing. We are awaiting a response from the United States—none has come so far, and we also expect a response from all in Europe and around the world who truly want peace.

Key Takeaways:
  • The rate of Russian advances in Ukraine has been steadily declining since November 2024, in part due to successful Ukrainian counterattacks in eastern Ukraine.
  • Russian forces conducted the largest series of missile and drone strikes against Ukraine in nearly a month on the night of April 5 and 6.
  • Ukrainian officials highlighted the fact that Russia is leveraging its naval vessels in the Black Sea to conduct missile strikes against Ukraine as Russia continues to stall the Black Sea moratorium on military operations that Ukraine and the United States have jointly proposed.
  • The Kremlin is attempting to portray Ukraine as consistently violating the proposed temporary ceasefire on strikes against energy infrastructure without providing evidence, in stark contrast to the pattern of Russian reporting about successful Ukrainian strikes against Russian energy infrastructure prior to the ceasefire proposal.
  • Ukrainian forces recently advanced near Borova, and Russian forces recently advanced in Kursk and Sumy oblasts and near Kupyansk, Toretsk, Pokrovsk, and Kurakhove.

It feels like this is going to go on and on and on. Russia says that no-one has answered its (ridiculous) questions, and that is what is holding up a ceasefire.

Kremlin says nobody has yet answered Russia's questions around a proposed Ukraine ceasefire

Here, as Russia publicly aims to strive for peace through diplomacy, they are secretly amassing a huge force in the rear, preparing to launch a massive offensive before the end of the month.

Unlike the poorly trained volunteers, convicts, and mobilized soldiers deployed elsewhere, these troops are undergoing additional training and being actively prepared for future combat. This force signals a serious Russian commitment to the operation. Combined with existing frontline units, it would grant Russia a 3-to-1 numerical advantage over Ukraine’s Third Army Corps defending the sector.

While Russia publicly claims readiness for peace, they are concealing its true intentions, creating a diplomatic smoke-screen to secretly build up forces for a large-scale offensive.

Analysts say that the U.S. has enough leverage over Russia — it could pressure Moscow by increasing military aid to Ukraine, strengthening the enforcement of existing sanctions or imposing additional tariffs on countries that buy Russian oil.

So far, Trump has done none of that.

Richard Betts, professor emeritus of war and peace studies at Columbia University, also said that "Trump has potential leverage on Russia but it is unclear whether or under what conditions he will use it — Trump is quite inconsistent, impulsive, and unpredictable."

"We are talking to Russia. We would like them to stop," Trump told reporters onboard Air Force One. "I don’t like the bombing, the bombing goes on and on, and every week thousands of young people being killed."

Despite repeated threats of additional sanctions, Trump has yet to take concrete steps to pressure Moscow, which continues offensive operations across Ukraine.
