Coca-Cola and Pepsi suspend operations in Russia
The American companies Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are suspending their activities in Russia. Coca-Cola said in a brief statement that it expressed its condolences to "the people who are suffering the indescribable consequences of the tragic events in Ukraine. We will continue to monitor the situation." It is not immediately clear what this means in concrete terms for the sale of Coca-Cola products.

PepsiCo, known for the soft drink Pepsi but also Doritos, Duyvis and Lay's, will stop selling soft drinks and will no longer invest and advertise in the country for the time being. The sale of first foods such as milk and baby food will continue.

"This will continue to support the livelihoods of our 20,000 Russian employees and the 40,000 Russian farm workers in our supply chain," said CEO Ramon Laguarta.

Five Reasons Why NATO Nations Don't Always Pay Their Fair Share

Why do some NATO countries spend less of a percentage of GDP on defense than others?

In short, they can’t afford it.

Michael Corgan, an associate professor of international relations at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, argues that health and retirement benefits promised to Europe’s aging population, combined with high taxes, would make it very difficult for such countries to spend much more on defense without enacting policies that would be difficult for their citizens to swallow.

“Virtually no democratically elected government could survive either situation,” Corgan told NBC News.

In Washington, there is pressure on the administration to get things done. They wanted to do this by shifting the decision to us. And yet this is something that the Russians can respond to, and something that comes at a cost. (...) I can see the fluctuations in this matter - continued the PO politician. - I hope that it can be agreed alliedly. Poland should not be left alone with this matter, he concluded.”

I don’t think its fair to jump on Poland like that they are doing so much for refugees and are so close to Russian border in case of aggression. There is two side of the story always..

Ukraine renews effort to free civilians as isolated Russia promises cease-fires

The Defense Department rejected what it said was an unexpected offer by Poland to have the U.S. take custody of Soviet-era fighter jets that would likely then be transferred to Ukraine.

U.S. officials said they were blindsided by Poland’s announcement and did not believe the proposal was "tenable." It differed from a previous proposal to have Warsaw deliver the MiG-29 jets to Kyiv directly.

The U.S. has said it would support Poland’s or another NATO member’s sending jets to Ukraine but has given no indication it would act as an intermediary, with countries eager to avoid becoming too closely embroiled in the conflict.

Harris heads to Poland amid turbulence over jets for Ukraine

“This fighter jet situation is a messy deal, and Harris will have to go there and smooth things out,” said Daniel Fried, who served as U.S. ambassador to Poland for President Bill Clinton and was a senior adviser in the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations. “There’s plenty of discussion on the way ahead that needs to be had with the Poles that is better to have in an in-person conversation.”

“I’ve made it clear that the United States will share in the responsibility of caring for the refugees so the costs do not fall entirely on the European countries bordering Ukraine,” Biden said. He had been looking to Congress to pass a $14 billion aid package to assist Ukraine and its eastern European allies.

Hours after Biden spoke, Poland blindsided the White House with its proposal.

Victoria Nuland, undersecretary of state for political affairs, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that she saw the Polish government’s announcement as she was driving to Capitol Hill to testify.

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn. called it “curious” for Poland to announce its plan “without alerting us first.”

Ukraine invasion live updates: Radiation fears as Chernobyl ‘cut from grid’, while Russia insists war ‘going to plan’ | The Independent
''PM says Putin ‘singling out’ UK for ‘leading’ global sanctions
Vladimir Putin has “singled out” the UK as the global leader on sanctions imposed on Russia over the invasion of Ukraine, Boris Johnson has claimed.

The PM sparked jeers and laughter from the Labour benches at PMQs when he claimed Moscow was particularly angry at Britain because his government was “in the lead” on retaliatory measures, reports Adam Forrest.

It comes amid increasing pressure on Mr Johnson to take more action to crack down on the influence on Russia-linked oligarchs and so-called “dirty money” in the UK.''

''Kyiv orchestra plays Ukraine national anthem as Russian troops advance
As Russian troops today continued to advance on Ukraine’s capital city, Kyiv, an orchestra assembled to play the country’s national anthem in an act of defiance.

The Kyiv-Classic Symphony Orchestra also played an excerpt from Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”, on which the EU’s anthem is based - a nod to the Ukraine government’s desire to move closer to Europe and away from Russia’s grip.

Dozens of people gathered to watch on the central Maidan Square, some waving Ukrainian flags. They applauded when the national anthem was finished and a woman cried out “To Ukraine!”
''The impromptu concert on Wednesday was held at Independence Square, where thousands of Ukrainian protesters set up a tent city in 2013 and 2014 to oppose then-president Viktor Yanukovich’s shock decision to suspend talks with the EU and revive ties with Moscow.''

''BREAKING: UK considering donation of anti-air missiles to Ukraine
Britain is considering donating Starstreak high velocity anti-air missiles to Ukraine to help the country defend its skies, Ben Wallace has announced.

Updating MPs, the defence secretary also said the latest UK military intelligence showed that Moscow had only been successful in one of its main military objectives since the invasion began 14 days ago, reports our political correspondent Ashley Cowburn.

“We believe that this system will remain within the definition of defensive weapons but will allow the Ukrainian force to better defend their skies,” Mr Wallace said earlier today.''

Russia-Ukraine war: Moscow promises humanitarian corridors; US to send Patriot missiles to Poland – live | World news | The Guardian
5m ago 14:02

Civilians have been unable to evacuate from the Ukrainian town of Izyum because of Russian shelling in the eastern Kharkiv region, regional governor Oleh Synehubov said.

An evacuation of civilians was scheduled to take place today from Izyum to Lozova as one of the six “humanitarian corridors” today, but Synehubov said buses were still waiting at the entrance to the town.

He added that negotiations with the Russians were under way with the support of the Red Cross.

More than 400,000 people are being “held hostage” in the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol by Russian forces who are blocking humanitarian aid and evacuation, Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said.

Conditions in the port of Mariupol have been described as “apocalyptic”, where hundreds of thousands of residents have been sheltering from brutal Russian shelling and missile attacks for more than a week without water, power or heating. Phone signals are also down.

More than 400 Ukrainians who protested against the occupation of Kherson by Russian forces have been detained by Russia’s national guard, Ukraine’s military high command said.

In a statement, the Ukrainian military high command said hundreds have been arrested for protesting in the now Russian-occupied Kherson.

Due to the furious resistance of the residents of Kherson, the occupiers are attempting to introduce an administrative-police regime.

"Chernobyl has lost power. I call on the entire international community to immediately call on Russia to cease fire and allow repair crews to restore the electricity supply as soon as possible," he said, noting reserve diesel generators had a 48-hour capacity to power the plant, after which the cooling systems will stop, "making radiation leaks imminent."

Ukrainians evacuate Kyiv suburbs amid deepening crisis | AP News
With sporadic gunfire echoing behind them, firefighters dragged an elderly man to safety in a wheelbarrow, a child gripped the hand of a helping soldier, and a woman inched her way along cradling a fluffy cat inside her winter coat. On the far side of the bridge, they all trudged past a crashed van with the words “Our Ukraine” written in the dust coating its windows.

“We have a short window of time at the moment,” said Yevhen Nyshchuk, a member of Ukraine’s territorial defense forces. “Even if there is a cease-fire right now, there is a high risk of shells falling at any moment.”

EXPLAINER: What does a US ban on Russian oil accomplish? | AP News
The impact on Russia would likely be minimal. The United States imports a small share of Russia’s oil exports and doesn’t buy any of its natural gas.

Last year, roughly 8% of U.S. imports of oil and petroleum products came from Russia. Together, the imports totaled the equivalent of 245 million barrels in 2021, which was roughly 672,000 barrels of oil and petroleum products a day. But imports of Russian oil have been declining rapidly as buyers shunned the fuel.

Because the amount of oil the U.S. imports from Russia is modest, Russia could potentially sell that oil elsewhere, perhaps in China or India. Still, it would probably have to sell it at a steep discount, because fewer and fewer buyers are accepting Russian oil.

Russia-Ukraine war: Wheat exports banned as civilians flee | AP News
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said efforts were being made Wednesday to evacuate some 18,000 people from embattled towns in the Kyiv region to the capital itself. Speaking in Russian, he appealed to Russian soldiers to save themselves and “just go home.”

Other routes may be open out of Mariupol, Enerhodar in the south, Volnovakha in the southeast and Izyum in the east during a 12-hour-long ceasefire Wednesday. Civilians would be led to places in Ukraine held by the government.

Elsewhere, Ukrainian officials said civilians, among them children, were killed by Russian firepower in the town of Chuhuiv late Tuesday and in the city of Malyn, to the west of Kyiv.

Pentagon rejects Polish plan to give fighter jets to U.S. to supply Ukraine

Between the lines: After Poland's announcement, which appeared to shift responsibility for making the deal happen to the U.S., a top State Department official said the Biden administration was not consulted.

"To my knowledge, it wasn't pre-consulted with us that they planned to give these planes to us," Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland testified to the Senate.

Russia's Defense Ministry had warned on Sunday that any country that allows Ukrainian-operated airplanes to use their soil to attack the Russian military could be considered a participant in the conflict.
