  Coca-Cola and Pepsi suspend operations in Russia
  The American companies Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are suspending their activities in Russia. Coca-Cola said in a brief statement that it expressed its condolences to "the people who are suffering the indescribable consequences of the tragic events in Ukraine. We will continue to monitor the situation." It is not immediately clear what this means in concrete terms for the sale of Coca-Cola products.
  
  PepsiCo, known for the soft drink Pepsi but also Doritos, Duyvis and Lay's, will stop selling soft drinks and will no longer invest and advertise in the country for the time being. The sale of first foods such as milk and baby food will continue.

Why do some NATO countries spend less of a percentage of GDP on defense than others?

In short, they can’t afford it.

Michael Corgan, an associate professor of international relations at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, argues that health and retirement benefits promised to Europe’s aging population, combined with high taxes, would make it very difficult for such countries to spend much more on defense without enacting policies that would be difficult for their citizens to swallow.

“Virtually no democratically elected government could survive either situation,” Corgan told NBC News.

Ukraine renews effort to free civilians as isolated Russia promises cease-fires

The Defense Department rejected what it said was an unexpected offer by Poland to have the U.S. take custody of Soviet-era fighter jets that would likely then be transferred to Ukraine.

U.S. officials said they were blindsided by Poland’s announcement and did not believe the proposal was "tenable." It differed from a previous proposal to have Warsaw deliver the MiG-29 jets to Kyiv directly.

The U.S. has said it would support Poland’s or another NATO member’s sending jets to Ukraine but has given no indication it would act as an intermediary, with countries eager to avoid becoming too closely embroiled in the conflict.

Harris heads to Poland amid turbulence over jets for Ukraine

“This fighter jet situation is a messy deal, and Harris will have to go there and smooth things out,” said Daniel Fried, who served as U.S. ambassador to Poland for President Bill Clinton and was a senior adviser in the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations. “There’s plenty of discussion on the way ahead that needs to be had with the Poles that is better to have in an in-person conversation.”

“I’ve made it clear that the United States will share in the responsibility of caring for the refugees so the costs do not fall entirely on the European countries bordering Ukraine,” Biden said. He had been looking to Congress to pass a $14 billion aid package to assist Ukraine and its eastern European allies.

Hours after Biden spoke, Poland blindsided the White House with its proposal.

Victoria Nuland, undersecretary of state for political affairs, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that she saw the Polish government’s announcement as she was driving to Capitol Hill to testify.

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn. called it “curious” for Poland to announce its plan “without alerting us first.”

Civilians have been unable to evacuate from the Ukrainian town of Izyum because of Russian shelling in the eastern Kharkiv region, regional governor Oleh Synehubov said.

An evacuation of civilians was scheduled to take place today from Izyum to Lozova as one of the six “humanitarian corridors” today, but Synehubov said buses were still waiting at the entrance to the town.

He added that negotiations with the Russians were under way with the support of the Red Cross.

More than 400,000 people are being “held hostage” in the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol by Russian forces who are blocking humanitarian aid and evacuation, Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said.

Conditions in the port of Mariupol have been described as “apocalyptic”, where hundreds of thousands of residents have been sheltering from brutal Russian shelling and missile attacks for more than a week without water, power or heating. Phone signals are also down.

In a statement, the Ukrainian military high command said hundreds have been arrested for protesting in the now Russian-occupied Kherson.

Due to the furious resistance of the residents of Kherson, the occupiers are attempting to introduce an administrative-police regime.

Pentagon rejects Polish plan to give fighter jets to U.S. to supply Ukraine

Between the lines: After Poland's announcement, which appeared to shift responsibility for making the deal happen to the U.S., a top State Department official said the Biden administration was not consulted.

"To my knowledge, it wasn't pre-consulted with us that they planned to give these planes to us," Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland testified to the Senate.

Russia's Defense Ministry had warned on Sunday that any country that allows Ukrainian-operated airplanes to use their soil to attack the Russian military could be considered a participant in the conflict.
