''Flights leaving Russia are selling out or skyrocketing in price after Putin announced a mobilization of military reservists. About 200 flights a day depart Moscow and St Petersburg for other countries. Turkey leads the list with 70 daily flights.''

Associated Press journalists in Moscow witnessed at least a dozen arrests in the first 15 minutes of a nighttime protest in the capital, with police in heavy body armor tackling demonstrators in front of shops, hauling some away as they chanted, “No to war!”

“I’m not afraid of anything. The most valuable thing that they can take from us is the life of our children. I won’t give them life of my child,” said one Muscovite, who declined to give her name.

Of the total, 200 Ukrainians were exchanged for just one man — pro-Russian opposition leader Viktor Medvedchuk, who is Ukrainian. The 68-year-old oligarch escaped from house arrest in Ukraine several days before Russia’s invasion Feb. 24 but was recaptured in April. He faced up to life in prison on charges of treason and aiding and abetting a terrorist organization for mediating coal purchases for the separatist, Russia-backed Donetsk republic in eastern Ukraine.

Putin is believed to be the godfather of Medvedchuk’s youngest daughter. His detention sparked a heated exchange between officials in Moscow and Kyiv. Medvedchuk is the head of the political council of Ukraine’s pro-Russian Opposition Platform-For Life party, the largest opposition group in Ukraine’s parliament. The government has suspended the party’s activity.

“It is not a pity to give up Medvedchuk for real warriors,” Zelenskyy said in a post on his website. “He has passed all the investigative actions provided by law. Ukraine has received from him everything necessary to establish the truth in the framework of criminal proceedings.”

Delivering a forceful condemnation of Russia’s seven-month invasion, Biden said reports of Russian abuses against civilians and its efforts to erase Ukraine and its culture “should make your blood run cold.” He referenced President Vladimir Putin’s announcement Wednesday that he had ordered a partial mobilization of reservists, a deeply unpopular step that sparked protests in Russia.

And Putin’s new nuclear threats against Europe showed “reckless disregard” for Russia’s responsibilities as a signer of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, Biden said.

He also criticized Russia for scheduling “sham referenda” this week in territory it has forcibly seized in Ukraine.

“A permanent member of the U..N Security Council invaded its neighbor, attempted to erase a sovereign state from the map. Russia has shamelessly violated the core tenets of the U.N. charter,” he told his U.N. audience.

Alexey Navalny, the Russian politician, now in prison, on mobilization:

“According to Mediazona, during a court hearing in Kovrov where his lawsuit against Penal Colony No. 6 in the Vladimir region is being heard, politician Alexey Navalny commented on reports that mobilization has been announced in Russia.

“I don’t understand one thing. The army has a million people, Rosgvardia has 350,000 people, the Interior Ministry has another million and a half or two million people, and the Federal Penitentiary Service is full of people. Why are they drafting civilians? There will be five million draft dodgers running back and forth across the country. And a million cops following them to mobilize somewhere,” said the politician.”

Heard from a man in Yakutia in eastern Russia this morning who says recruiting officers are going around rural villages drafting men. "There’s around 300 people in each village, and here they’re taking 45, 40. Who will work here?"

The man from Yakutia also said the supposed limits Putin claimed would apply to the mobilisation were being ignored. They're taking "everyone and anyone…whether they served in the army, whether they have 5 kids…Everyone, they’re giving everyone those papers"

A man from a village in Yakutia in Russia's far east expressed anger and disbelief at the mobilisation. He said there was alarm in rural villages over who would now do the farm work ahead of the region's harsh winter with so many men being taken.

Ukraine war latest: Biden sends secret nuclear strike warning to Putin

The US has been sending secret messages to Russia to warn that it will face grave consequences if it conducts a nuclear strike in Ukraine.

''The US has been sending secret messages to Russia to warn that it will face grave consequences if it conducts a nuclear strike in Ukraine.

Deliberately vague, the memos are designed to keep the Kremlin guessing over how Joe Biden, the US President, would respond.

US officials told the Washington Post newspaper the private communications had been dispatched regularly for the last several months.

The revelation emerged after Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, on Wednesday issued a threat to retaliate with nuclear weapons.

Western officials have played down the chances of the Kremlin leader using nuclear weapons, noting he has said similar things in the past. ''

''Traffic across Finland-Russian border 'heavy'

Traffic into Finland over its border with Russia is heavy today, with the number of Russians crossing rising steadily since President Vladimir Putin ordered a military mobilisation, border guards said.

The number of Russians who had entered the previous day was more than double the amount who arrived the week before, they said.

"This morning it remains busy...maybe increasing a little bit from yesterday," a border guard spokesperson said.

Max, a 21-year-old Russian student who declined to give his last name, said he was going to Finland to catch a flight to Germany to visit relatives.

''Germany welcomes 'good sign' that Russians do not want to take part in the war

Berlin has said many Russians being called up to fight in the war in Ukraine do not want to take part, adding that this was welcome.

"Many Russians who are now being called up do not want to take part in this war either. This is a good sign," a government spokesperson told a regular news conference.

"A way must be left open for Russians to come to Europe and also to Germany," the spokesperson added.''

China: The men who are single and the women who don't want kids

Experts say lifting birth restrictions is not enough if families do not receive other support.

''After all, there is a severe gender imbalance in the country - last year, there were 34.9 million more males than females.''

''In China and India, men outnumber women by 70 million. Both nations are belatedly trying to come to grips with the policies that created this male-heavy generation

''Nothing like this has happened in human history. A combination of cultural preferences, government decree and modern medical technology in the world’s two largest countries has created a gender imbalance on a continental scale. Men outnumber women by 70 million in China and India.

The consequences of having too many men, now coming of age, are far-reaching: Beyond an epidemic of loneliness, the imbalance distorts labor markets, drives up savings rates in China and drives down consumption, artificially inflates certain property values, and parallels increases in violent crime, trafficking or prostitution in a growing number of locations.

Those consequences are not confined to China and India, but reach deep into their Asian neighbors and distort the economies of Europe and the Americas, as well. Barely recognized, the ramifications of too many men are only starting to come into sight.

“In the future, there will be millions of men who can’t marry, and that could pose a very big risk to society,” warns Li Shuzhuo, a leading demographer at Xi’an Jiaotong University''

"In February 2015 Russian politician Boris Nemtsov—a fierce critic of Vladimir Putin—was shot dead on a bridge in the shadow of the Kremlin. Five men were convicted for his murder, but urgent questions remained: Who ordered the killing…and why? Now, a new film from Bellingcat, The Insider, and BBC Eye Investigations reveals evidence that, in the year running up to the shooting, Boris Nemtsov was being shadowed by a government agent linked to a secret assassination squad.''

Russian men join exodus, fearing call-up to fight in Ukraine

Sept 23 2022

''Four out of five EU countries that border Russia — Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland — also recently decided to turn away Russian tourists.

Some European officials view fleeing Russians as potential security risks.

Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said Thursday that many of them “were fine with killing Ukrainians. They did not protest then. It is not right to consider them as conscientious objectors.”

The one EU country that is still accepting Russians with Schengen visas is Finland, which has a 1,340-kilometer (830-mile) border with Russia.

Finland border guards said Friday that the number of people entering from Russia has increased, with media reporting a 107% increase compared with last week.''

Russian men with certain white-collar jobs in banking, I.T. and telecommunications will not be called up to join the war effort, the Russian Ministry of Defense said Friday, after companies complained that the draft announced by President Vladimir V. Putin could badly affect their ability to operate.

The head of Russia’s union of air traffic controllers wrote a letter on Wednesday to the Russian prime minister, Mikhail V. Mishustin, to warn that conscription would “jeopardize the normal functioning of the entire aviation system, including security and the regularity of flights of civil and state aviation, including aviation of the Air Force of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.”

On Wednesday, Russia’s defense minister, Sergei K. Shoigu, told the Russian people that only “those who served in the army, primarily those who have combat experience and a military specialty,” would join the ranks of the expected 300,000 men pressed into service.

However, it quickly became clear, including from the Defense Ministry itself, that many men who did not meet these criteria — including those who lacked even the basic military service that is mandatory for men without an exemption — were being called up.

#G7 countries will never recognize the results of "referenda" in territories not controlled by #Ukraine, the leaders say in a joint statement. The #Erdogan administration also stated that #Turkey does not recognize the "referenda" held by the occupiers in Ukraine.

Russia uses fake referendums to escalate war - NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg said that after a "free expression of will," the Kremlin will claim that Russian territory is being attacked with Alliance weapons. NATO's response, according to him, will be strengthening Ukraine.

"Lithuania will not be granting asylum to those who are simply running from responsibility. Russians should stay and fight. Against Putin," Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis wrote.

Commission investigators visited 27 towns and settlements, as well as graves and detention and torture centers; interviewed more than 150 victims and witnesses; and met with advocacy groups and government officials, Mose said.

He said an unspecified number of Russian soldiers were found to have committed crimes of sexual or gender-based violence – with victims ranging in age from 4 to 82 years old.

The commission plans to gradually expand its investigation, with areas of interest including allegations of filtration camps for people being detained or deported, the forced transfer of people, and allegations of expedited adoption of children.

“The evidence of Russia’s atrocities becomes more horrifying by the day...

The lines of cars were so long at the border with Kazakhstan that some people abandoned their vehicles and proceeded on foot — just as some Ukrainians did after Russia invaded their country on Feb. 24.

Meanwhile, dozens of flights out of Russia — with tickets sold at sky-high prices — carried men to international destinations such as Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Serbia, where Russians don’t need visas.

Among those who reached Turkey was a 41-year-old who landed in Istanbul with a suitcase and a backpack and plans to start a new life in Israel.

“I’m against this war, and I’m not going to be a part of it. I’m not going to be a murderer. I’m not going to kill people,” said the man, who identified himself only as Yevgeny to avoid potential retribution against his family left behind in Russia.

Luhansk Gov. Serhiy Haidai said the voting “looked more like an opinion survey under the gun barrels,” adding that Moscow-backed local authorities sent armed escorts to accompany election officials and to take down the names of individuals who voted against joining Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Ukrainians in occupied regions to undermine the referendums and to share information about the people conducting “this farce.” He also called on Russian recruits to sabotage and desert the military if they are called up under the partial troop mobilization President Vladimir Putin announced Wednesday.

“If you get into the Russian army, sabotage any activity of the enemy, hinder any Russian operations, provide us with any important information about the occupiers – their bases, headquarters, warehouses with ammunition,” Zelenskyy said.
