‘We don’t want this’: Russians react to the Ukraine invasion

People on the streets of Moscow express anger and a sense of hopelessness after Putin’s move

A dark, sombre mood filled the Moscow air on Thursday morning as Russians were coming to terms with the fact that their president had launched a broad military offensive targeting Ukraine.

“I am embarrassed for my country. To be honest with you, I am speechless. War is always scary. We don’t want this,” said Nikita Golubev, a 30-year old teacher.

(...)

There were already signs that Russians were uncomfortable with Putin’s initial decision to recognise the two self-proclaimed republics in Donbas.

On Tuesday, Yuri Dudt, one of Russia’s most popular media personalities, said he “did not vote for this regime” and its need for an empire and felt ashamed, in a post that received almost a million likes in 24 hours.

A fresh poll by the independent Levada Center released on Thursday showed that only 45% of Russians stood in favour of the recognition move that preceded Thursday morning’s dramatic events.

(...)

In the end, no major false flag came, and experts now believe that Putin decided to act without gathering the backing of his own electorate.

“Putin seems totally indifferent to approval on the street. He’s acting not like a politician in need of public support, but like a figure from national history books who cares only about the approval of future historians and readers,” tweeted Alexander Baunov, a political analyst at the Carnegie Moscow Center.

The Russian leader looked to have also surprised some of Russia’s most prominent oligarchs, who saw their wealth tumble as the country’s financial markets collapsed.

(...)

But in a country where a single picket protest can land you in jail, and which saw an unprecedented crackdown on the opposition in the last few years, it remains a question to what extent Russians will be able and willing to take to streets to show their opposition to the bloody conflict. A notable police presence was seen at Red Square and Pushkin Square, places known to host protests.

Europe is preparing for refugee flow from Ukraine
Europe is preparing for a flood of refugees from Ukraine. Neighboring countries such as Poland, Moldova, Slovakia and Romania are prepared to receive tens of thousands of displaced persons.

It is difficult to estimate how many Ukrainians will leave their country after the Russian invasion. In any case, it is clear that thousands of residents have left the capital Kiev. Peter Wijninga, defense specialist at the Hague Center for Strategic Studies (HCSS) suspects that most of them are being accommodated in Ukraine itself for the time being.

Poland
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said earlier this week that one to five million Ukrainians would be displaced as a result of a Russian invasion. The Pentagon expects some to flee to Poland, to continue west from there. US soldiers help set up camps in Poland on the border with Ukraine.

The German government is ready to assist Poland and other countries bordering Ukraine in case many Ukrainians flee there. This promise has been made by Secretary of the Interior Nancy Faeser. The prime minister of Slovakia pledged on Thursday to help Ukrainian refugees and Romania already said on Tuesday that it is preparing for the arrival of half a million people from Ukraine.

Minister Faeser did not comment on admitting Ukrainians to the Federal Republic. During the Syrian civil war, then-Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the borders to refugees from that country in 2015. Hundreds of thousands of people from Syria and other countries came there. In 2015, 890,000 people applied for asylum in Germany. It has led to heated debates in Germany about taking in large numbers of refugees.

Moldavia
Another neighboring country, Moldova, announced today that it is declaring a state of emergency over the Russian invasion. The country is ready to host tens of thousands of refugees from Ukraine, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said. Moldova, like Ukraine, is a former Soviet republic. The country also, like Ukraine, has a renegade pro-Russian region. This is Transnistria. That region, about the size of Noord-Holland, is in fact virtually independent, but is not recognized by anyone. Transnistria borders Ukraine. An unknown number of Russian military personnel are stationed in the region, much to the dismay of the government of Moldova.

Hungary
Hungary is moving troops to the border with Ukraine as it braces for a possible influx of refugees fleeing conflict with Russia, Hungary's defense ministry said. The number of troops involved has not yet been announced. The border between Ukraine and Hungary, which is a member of the EU and NATO, is about 140 kilometers long. Hungarian Defense Minister Tibor Benkö said his country will provide humanitarian aid to refugees.

UN agency Unicef is scaling up emergency aid in Ukraine and, among other things, bringing clean drinking water to the conflict areas. Care providers also provide assistance to children who have suffered trauma. The aid organization fears that tens of thousands of families will have to flee. UNICEF is deeply concerned about the fate of the country's 7.5 million children and calls for an immediate ceasefire. The organization says essential water infrastructure and educational facilities in the country have been damaged by the violence.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has once again called on Dutch people in Ukraine to leave the country 'if it is safe to do so'. Compatriots have to arrange their evacuation themselves, the Dutch government itself does not take any action to remove people. The ministry points out that there is a support center in Lviv, where emergency aid can be given to Dutch people. A contact center is available 24 hours a day.

Refugees to the Netherlands
If Ukrainians fleeing the violence of war come to the Netherlands, the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) will have to quickly create new reception locations. All reception centers for refugees are currently full, a COA spokeswoman said when asked.

"If people from Ukraine come to the Netherlands, we will do our utmost to accommodate them," she adds. “We cannot do this alone, we need others to do this.” Municipalities in particular play an important role in this.

“We have always succeeded so far,” emphasizes the spokeswoman. That required a lot of art and flying work lately. COA set up new emergency shelter locations in Enschede, Leeuwarden and Goes. In addition, asylum seekers are temporarily accommodated on boats in various places. In this way we managed to cope with the influx 'in the nick of time'.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte said earlier in the day that the Netherlands will "monitor the flow of refugees very precisely". Citizens of Ukraine can stay here for up to 90 days without a visa. If they want or need to stay longer in the Netherlands, they can apply for asylum.

Russian Forces Seize Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (vice.com)

Myhailo Podolyak, advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has told the Associated Press that Russia has taken control of Chernobyl. “This is one of the most serious threats to Europe today,” he said.

According to the Associated Press report, a Russian shelling hit and pierced a radioactive waste containment repository.

President Zelenskyy earlier said that Russians were attempting to seize control of the Chernobyl power plant near Pripyat in the north of Ukraine.

“Russian occupation forces are trying to seize the [Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant,]” Zelenskyy said in a tweet. “Our defenders are giving their lives so that the tragedy of 1986 will not be repeated. Reported this to [Swedish Prime Minister.] This is a declaration of war against the whole of Europe.”

EU to sanction Belarus for supporting Putin's invasion – leak

EU leaders will call for sanctions against Belarus for its role in supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to a leaked summit text.

A draft statement seen by the Guardian, to be finalised by EU leaders meeting later on Thursday night, condemns “the involvement of Belarus in this aggression against Ukraine” and calls on Minsk to abide by its international obligations.

The document states:

The European Council [of EU leaders] calls for the swift preparation of a further sanctions package that will also cover Belarus.

Belarus is already subject to EU sanctions, targeting individuals and sectors of its economy, following President Alexander Lukashenko’s brutal crackdown on peaceful protesters in 2020.

The draft text repeats EU warnings that Russia will be hit with further sanctions that “impose massive and severe consequences” - but does not spell out what those measures are. That has to agreed by the EU’s 27 leaders meeting in Brussels on Thursday evening.

Chernobyl captures imaginations, brings underground tourism 35 years after nuclear disaster - ABC News (go.com)
''John is one of many so-called "Stalkers," the name -- taken from the 1979 Andrey Tarkovsky film -- for illegal explorers of the 30 kilometer abandoned zone around the Chernobyl former nuclear power station. His group, Chernobylexplorer, is one of the agencies offering unauthorized tours of the zone that in 1986 was the scene of the world’s worst nuclear disaster.

At one time, the "Stalkers’' attitude to Chernobyl were seen as unusual, but 35 years after the catastrophe, the site increasingly holds a different place in many Ukrainians’ imaginations. For some, it is becoming a place of inspiration and rebirth, and that now -- in a strange irony -- needs to be protected.''

Putin behaves like a 'jealous ex', says this Bossche Ukraine expert DPG Media Privacy Gate

"Speak Putin's language." The advice of Karel Burger Dirven, honorary consul of Ukraine in the Netherlands, to the EU is crystal clear. “If you want it to stop, there must be a military response. Precisely to ensure that there is no war. Fight threat with threat.”

Loosely translated: only with tanks will you get Putin back in his cage. The current (economic) sanctions will not in the least prevent the Russian president from steaming further in Ukraine , argues the native from Bosch. “That is absolutely insufficient.”

Putin's much-discussed speech two days ago only strengthened Burger Dirven's conviction that this president is no longer open to reason. He was shocked. From the fierceness with which he spoke, the threatening message he had, but above all the look in his eyes. "I've never seen a president look that way before. It was terrifying.” On social media, the former Brabant Member of Parliament described Putin's performance as 'lurid'. He wished the Russian leader a one-way ticket to the International Court of Justice.

"NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Thursday that Russia has launched war on Ukraine and shattered peace on the European continent."

"Stoltenberg called for a summit of NATO leaders for Friday. He spoke shortly after the transatlantic alliance agreed after emergency talks to further beef up its land, sea and air forces on its eastern flank near Ukraine and Russia."

"Russia has attacked Ukraine," Stoltenberg said. "This is a brutal act of war. Our thoughts are with the brave people of Ukraine."

"Peace on our continent has been shattered," he said. "This is a deliberate, cold-blooded and long-planned invasion. Russia is using force to try to rewrite history."

What does Putin want in Ukraine? The conflict explained - CNN
After months of military buildup and brinkmanship on its border with Ukraine, Russia invaded its ex-Soviet neighbor with a multi-pronged attack, threatening to destabilize Europe and draw in the United States.

A whirlwind of diplomatic efforts to stave off a Russian invasion in recent weeks failed to defuse tensions that had mounted over months.

Russia had been tightening its military grip around Ukraine since last year, amassing tens of thousands of soldiers, as well as equipment and artillery, on the country's doorstep.

Excerpts:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Thursday a new suite of "severe" sanctions against Russian entities after the country's president, Vladimir Putin, launched a series of unprovoked attacks on neighbouring Ukraine late last night.

The economic measures — which the government says were carefully coordinated with other G7 countries — are meant to hobble Russia's economy as its forces push further into Ukraine.

These sanctions are wide-reaching. They will impose severe costs on complicit Russian elites, and they will limit President Putin's ability to continue funding this unjustified invasion," Trudeau said.

Canadians are also barred from purchasing Russian sovereign debt and dealing with two state-backed Russian banks.

Effective immediately, Canada also will stop issuing export permits for Russian products and cancel existing permits.
