Ukraine conflict: Asia stocks drop after nuclear plant attack - BBC News
[...]

The fire happened after Russia troops shelled the plant. Some investor concerns were eased after officials said the plant's safety was "secured".

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) later said that it had spoken to Ukraine's leadership and had been told important equipment at the plant was still working.

The shelling has drawn international condemnation, with the US President Joe Biden joining Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in urging Russia to cease the shelling and allow firefighters to access the site.

Man in Poland opens home to Ukrainians seeking refuge from war-torn homeland (fox29.com)
"When they've turned up at my place, they've been so exhausted, they can hardly talk," said Ney, who spoke to FOX 29's Chris O'Connell from his home in Warsaw around midnight.

Ney had just taken in three Ukrainian refugees off the street who traveled an estimated 30 hours to seek shelter.

"We don't know each other. We've never met each other before. I really have no idea who they are. But they're welcome in my home," Ney said.

Poland and its neighbors are familiar with war-torn strife from the scars of World War II and Ney believes it's what has inspired so many people to offer help.

Russia attacks Ukraine nuclear plant as invasion advances | AP News

[...]

Nuclear plant spokesman Andriy Tuz told Ukrainian television that shells were falling directly on the facility and had set fire to one of its six reactors. That reactor is under renovation and not operating, but there is nuclear fuel inside, he said.

Firefighters cannot get near the flames because they are being shot at, he said, and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted a plea to the Russians to stop the assault and allow fire teams inside.

“We demand that they stop the heavy weapons fire,” Tuz said in a video statement. “There is a real threat of nuclear danger in the biggest atomic energy station in Europe.”

[...]

U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm tweeted that the Zaporizhzhia plant’s reactors were protected by robust containment structures and were being safely shut down.

In an emotional speech in the middle of the night, Zelenskyy said he feared an explosion that would be “the end for everyone. The end for Europe. The evacuation of Europe.”

“Only urgent action by Europe can stop the Russian troops,” he said. “Do not allow the death of Europe from a catastrophe at a nuclear power station.”

[...]

The International Atomic Energy Agency said the fire had not affected essential equipment and that Ukraine’s nuclear regulator reported no change in radiation levels. The American Nuclear Society concurred, saying that the latest radiation levels remained within natural background levels.

“The real threat to Ukrainian lives continues to be the violent invasion and bombing of their country,” the group said in a statement.

Jon Wolfsthal, who served during the Obama administration as the senior director for arms control and nonproliferation at the National Security Council, said the plant’s reactors have thick concrete containment domes that should protect them from tank and artillery fire.

But he too was concerned about a potential loss of power at the plant, which could imperil its ability to keep the nuclear fuel cool.

[...]

Prior to the shelling, the Ukrainian state atomic energy company reported that a Russian military column was heading toward the nuclear plant. Loud shots and rocket fire were heard late Thursday.

[...]

Later, a livestreamed security camera linked from the homepage of the Zaporizhzhia plant showed what appeared to be armored vehicles rolling into the facility’s parking lot and shining spotlights on the building where the camera was mounted.

Then there were what appeared to be muzzle flashes from vehicles, followed by nearly simultaneous explosions in surrounding buildings. Smoke rose into the frame and drifted away.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal called on the West to close the skies over the country’s nuclear plants. “It is a question of the security of the whole world!” he said in a statement.

The U.S. and NATO allies have ruled out creating a no-fly zone since the move would pit Russian and Western military forces against each other.

Putin’s ‘irrationality’ means a no-fly zone over Ukraine is too risky, Canada’s top diplomat says | The Star
''OTTAWA—Russia President Vladimir Putin has displayed “irrationality” in his invasion of Ukraine, prompting NATO countries to reject Ukraine’s calls for a “no-fly” zone so as not to escalate the conflict into a direct war with Russia, says Canada’s top diplomat.''

''However, Joly twice referenced Putin’s “irrationality” — behaviour she suggested has led Canada, the U.S., Britain, Australia, New Zealand and European partners to all agree that what must be avoided is an international war.''

She said she was on the same flight as her Latvian and Estonian counterparts, en route from Poland after travelling near the Ukraine border to speak to Ukrainian nationals fleeing to determine what they most need.

NATO member states, particularly those bordering Russia “are much more preoccupied with how we’re dealing with Ukraine because this is a testament of how we would deal with other potential pressures, particularly on them directly,” she said. “They want reinforcements of the eastern'' flank. And so at this point, I think we’re seeing a movement of solidarity.”

Four Irish babies born to surrogate mothers in Ukraine in recent days have been safely evacuated from the war-torn country, The Irish Times understands.

Zelensky applauded Western nations for moving to punish Russia by hobbling its economy, saying, “Strong sanctions right now, I think that was a good start.”

8m ago 00:27

Summary
It is 7.27am in Ukraine as Russia’s war on its neighbour enters its ninth day. Here is where the crisis stands:
  • A fire broke out in a training building outside a nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia in the early hours of Friday, after being shelled by Russian forces, Ukrainian authorities said. An employee at the plant said Russian forces had fired on the facility and there was “a real threat of nuclear danger at the largest nuclear power plant in Europe”.
  • After burning for at least four hours amid reports Russian troops had prevented emergency teams from attending to the blaze, Ukrainian emergency services confirmed the blaze was extinguished at 6.20am local time. Fighting at the plant has also reportedly stopped, according to the mayor of Enerhodar, a town located south-east of the plant.
  • The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) earlier said it had put its Incident and Emergency Centre in “full 24/7 response mode” due to the “serious situation” unfolding at Zaporizhzhia.
  • However, US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm provided reassurance surrounding the Zaporizhzhia power plant reactors, saying there was no elevated radiation readings near the facility and the plant’s reactors are “protected by robust containment structures and reactors are being safely shut down.”
  • Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskiy made another appeal to Europe for help following the attack on the nuclear plant. He said: We warn everyone that not a single nation ever shelled nuclear power stations. For the first time in the history of humankind, the terrorist state commits nuclear terrorism.
  • British prime minister Boris Johnson called Russian president Vladimir Putin’s “reckless actions” a danger to the safety of Europe.
  • Russian forces continue to control both local and regional government buildings in the strategically important Black Sea port of Kherson, local authorities said. Russian forces appeared to be moving to cut Ukraine off from the sea via its key southern ports, claiming the capture of Kherson and tightening the siege of Mariupol.
  • Concern is mounting over the movements of a huge column of Russian military vehicles outside Kyiv. While a US defence official suggested it appeared to have “stalled”, there was also speculation that an estimated 15,000 troops attached to it may be regrouping and waiting for logistical supplies before an assault on Kyiv.
  • In a televised speech shortly after his 90-minute call with Macron, Putin claimed Russian military operations in Ukraine were going according to plan. The president went on to accuse Ukrainian forces of using civilians as “human shields” while providing no evidence.
