Ukraine's UN Ambassador Bluntly Tells Putin To 'Kill Himself' Like Hitler

Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations had some blunt advice for Vladimir Putin during Monday’s emergency special session: kill himself in a bunker, like Adolf Hitler.

[...]

Last week, he bluntly called out Russia’s U.N. ambassador, Vasily Nebenzya, who was ironically leading a U.N. Security Council discussion of the invasion.

“There is no purgatory for war criminals,” Kyslytsya told Nebenzya. “They go straight to hell, Ambassador.”

'Our Streets, Our Town': Unarmed Ukrainians Confront Russian Troops (Video)

In one Ukrainian town, invading Russian troops admitted over a loudspeaker that the streets belonged to local residents who refused to move out of their way. But the military column then dispersed the crowd with an unspecified gas. Across Ukraine, it was another day that saw unarmed civilians confronting heavily armed Russian soldiers.

Snapshots From The War: Under Heavy Fire Or Tensely Waiting, All Ukraine Is Under Siege (rferl.org)

"The town is being destroyed," one resident wrote to RFE/RL's Donbas.Realities on February 27. "Direct hits to the hospital. Houses are burning. Looters are thriving -- they steal groceries, mobile phones, appliances. Residents are in basements, completely cut off from information. There is no light, water, heat, or telephone connection."

Volnovakha, with a prewar population of about 21,000, lies in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region, about 65 kilometers southwest of the regional capital, Donetsk, and on the front line between Ukrainian forces and the combined arms of the Moscow-backed separatists and their Russian military allies. It has been the scene of intense fighting since February 27.

"Private homes and apartment buildings, infrastructure facilities, and a hospital were severely damaged by the occupiers' shelling," the Kyiv-appointed head of the Donetsk regional administration, Pavlo Kyrylenko, told RFE/RL. "The town is blocked by the enemy," he added. "It is impossible to evacuate the population or even bring people bread and water.... I appeal to international humanitarian organizations to help the city."

Key port of Mariupol under siege as IMF and World Bank pledge $3bn for Ukraine – as it happened | World news | The Guardian

It is 6.30am in Ukraine. Here’s where we stand right now:
  • Russian troops have reportedly landed in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second most populous city, according to the security service of Ukraine. Russian partatroopers reportedly landed at around 3am local time (1am GMT) and engaged in heavy fighting with Ukrainian forces.
  • Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine are coming under more bombardment in the early hours of Wednesday morning as the Russian military steps up its offensive and moves forces closer towards the capital.
  • Joe Biden’s used his State of the Union address to warn Vladimir Putin that he cannot divide the west and that dictators should “pay a price for their aggression”. He won a standing ovation for his praise of the Ukrainian resistance against what he called Russian “tyranny”.
  • Biden also announced that the US is closing American airspace to all Russian flights, “further isolating Russia”.
  • Four people have been killed after homes in the city of Zhytomyr west of Kyiv were hit by a cruise missile apparently aimed at a nearby airbase, Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the interior minister, said on his Telegram channel.
  • The southern cities of Kherson and Mariupol are likely now encircled by the Russians, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.
  • Thousands of Ukrainians are trying to leave Kyiv, our correspondent in Kyiv reported, as Russia’s defence ministry warned residents to leave as it plans to strike targets in the Ukrainian capital. The UN says more than 680,000 people have already fled the city.
  • The IMF and the World Bank have condemned the Russian action in Ukraine and the “horrifying” suffering of people there. The organisations pledged a $3bn package of support for the country.
  • Apple has said it will pause all product sales in Russia while Boeing is suspending “major operations” in Moscow, as well as “parts, maintenance, and technical support services for Russian airlines”. Ford and the British carmaker Jaguar Land Rover have also suspended operations, along with Nike.
  • Brent crude oil has soared 5.8% to $110.09 a barrel, its highest since 2014. The Russian rouble has fallen again in early trading on Wednesday to hit 109.2 to the dollar.

Key port of Mariupol under siege as IMF and World Bank pledge $3bn for Ukraine – as it happened | World news | The Guardian

Governments across Southeast Asia are trying to urgently evacuate their citizens from Ukraine.

A group of 53 Thai nationals are expected to leave Ukraine today, while 23 remain in several cities and have been unable to travel “due to lockdowns and other conditions”, according to the spokesman of Thailand’s ministry of foreign affairs, Tanee Sangrat. As of 1 March, 1,143 Thai nationals had departed the country.

Similar efforts are underway across the region, including in Indonesia, which said on Monday that it had evacuated 31 citizens, according to the Jakarta Post. On Tuesday night, a group of 13 Filipinos, including three students and a baby, arrived in Manila, after travelling from Kyiv to Lviv in Western Ukraine, and then to Poland. Six others were repatriated last month.

Southeast Asian governments’ response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has mostly been muted. A statement released by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations did not mention Russia by name, but called on “all relevant parties to exercise maximum restraint”.

However, Singapore made a rare announcement this week that it would impose sanctions on Russia, which it said were prompted by the “unprecedented gravity” of the situation.

War in Ukraine: Vladimir Putin's 4 unacceptable conditions for him to accept a ceasefire! (msn.com)
The first day of negotiations between Ukrainians and Russians ended in failure for the simple reason that the conditions set out by Vladimir Putin for him to accept a ceasefire are "unacceptable", according to a source at the Élysée who confided in our colleagues at Le Point.

And for good reason, the Russian head of state indicated that he had four demands before laying down his arms: "the neutrality of Ukraine, its disarmament, its renunciation of entering NATO and Ukraine's recognition of Crimea as a Russian entity". Several conditions that Ukrainian President Zelensky is not about to accept... The latter also made it known to the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron during a telephone interview held during the same day last Monday...

Researchers gather evidence of possible Russian war crimes in Ukraine | Russia | The Guardian
Six days after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, there is mounting evidence that its military is committing war crimes with deadly attacks on civilians and the use of cluster munitions.

[...]

Several NGOs have focused on an attack on a kindergarten in Okhtyrka, about 60 miles west of Kharkiv, on Friday, the second day of all-out fighting. Drone footage taken in the aftermath shows multiple blackened explosion spots, and dead or severely injured people by the entrance.

[...]

Intentionally targeting civilians or civilian buildings is considered a war crime under international humanitarian law, as are attacks on military targets that cause excessive civilian casualties, according to the United Nations. Russia routinely denies it engages in illegal attacks.

Roos Boer, a project leader with the Pax peace project in the Netherlands, said: “If you are in doubt whether a target is military or not, you should presume it is civilian. An indiscriminate attack therefore is unlawful.”

[...]

But despite concerns raised by western intelligence, clear evidence is yet to emerge of Russian forces using destructive thermobaric weapons (although Ukraine has claimed capture of a TOS-1A flamethrower) or cluster incendiary bombs of the type that its forces were accused of using in Syria during the siege of Aleppo.

[...]

Aided by the willingness of Ukrainians and others to document the conflict on their phones, independent researchers such as Bellingcat have been able to quickly geolocate and document evidence that could be useful in the future.

Bellingcat has also set up a partnership with Mnemonic, an NGO dedicated to archiving evidence collected from social media and mobile phones, which aims to secure material to the standard of evidence. “The day may come when all this ends up at the international criminal court,” Higgins said.

Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, said on Ukrainian television on Tuesday that his country received information about a planned assassination attempt on President Volodymyr Zelensky from agents of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB).

“I can say that we received information from representatives of the FSB, who today have no desire to take part in this bloody war,” said Danilov, who claimed that the Chechen special forces sent to kill Zelensky had been “eliminated.”

“The Kadyrovites’ elite group, which came here specifically to eliminate our president, was directly destroyed,” he said. Kadyrovites refers to a Chechen paramilitary group accused of a number of human-rights violations and abuses. They serve at the pleasure of Razman Kadyrov, the head of the Chechen Republic and a close ally of Vladimir Putin.

Russia and Ukraine together produce nearly a quarter of the world’s wheat. Wheat prices have already risen by 1/3 since the start of the invasion, because Ukraine can't deliver and Russia is sanctioned. We are going to feel that soon. Bread, cookies and noodles f.i. are going to be much more expensive.

Ruim tweehonderd vrijwilligers in Nederland willen vechten tegen Rusland | NU - Het laatste nieuws het eerst op NU.nl
More than two hundred people who want to fight against the Russian army have registered at the Ukrainian embassy in The Hague. That is what honorary consul Karel Burger Dirven said in Nieuwsuur on Tuesday .

Besides dozens of Dutch people, mainly Ukrainians and Poles have registered. "We receive e-mail after e-mail. The Dutch feel connected and that is heartwarming," says Burger Dirven.

Dutch people who go to fight in Ukraine are committing a criminal offense, experts and the Ministry of Defense confirm. But military historian Christ Klep stated in the news program that because of all the sympathy for Ukraine, it will probably run loose.

Nederlanders mogen meevechten tegen de Russen, maar als burger mag je niet zomaar iemand doden

The Dutch are allowed to fight against the Russians, but as a civilian you can't just kill someone

Several Dutch people have reported to the Ukrainian embassy as volunteers to fight against the Russian army. This is permitted by law, according to experts, although the usefulness of such an international brigade appears to be mainly for publicity purposes.

When asked, the Ukrainian embassy says that 'some Dutch people have reported to serve in the Ukrainian armed forces'. According to a diplomat, such requests came in before his president last Sunday called on foreigners to help fight in a yet-to-be-formed international brigade. According to the embassy, the number of registrations is secret. The diplomat, who is very grateful for all the help and expressions of support in the Netherlands, summarizes the motivation of the volunteers with: 'To fight for Ukraine; for Europe; for democratic values.'

Ukraine: A Timeline Of Cyberattacks | CyberPeace Institute

Last updated on March 1, 2022

Against the backdrop of the military invasion of Ukraine, the CyberPeace Institute is tracking how cyberattacks and operations are, and have been, targeting critical infrastructure and civilian objects.

The tracking of cyberattacks and incidents as they become public is important in order to record these attacks and identify – where possible – the harm and risks for civilian populations. Cyberattacks affect people and risk lives. Civilian populations are protected under international humanitarian law.

The important legal principles of distinction (distinguish at all times between military objectives and civilian objects) and proportionality (prohibit attacks expected to cause excessive civilian harm) have a direct bearing on cyber operations during armed conflicts in order to protect the civilian population against the effects of such operations.

In recent weeks there has been a significant escalation in the number of reported cyberattacks against Ukrainian institutions, organizations and the wider population. Ukraine is no stranger to being on the receiving-end of cyberattacks and the timeline below tracks the most significant incidents to date.

The targeting of critical infrastructure raises particular concern as this infrastructure is essential for the survival of the civilian population. Attacks on infrastructure such as energy, water, healthcare, financial institutions, transport and communication services can have devastating consequences on the civilian population.

The mayor: Russian troops are approaching Kyiv

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko states that large Russian troops are now approaching the capital.

- We are prepared and we will defend Kyiv, he writes in a post, reports Reuters.

- Kyiv stands and will continue to stand.

Ukrainian authorities have sent out a message on the Telegram service that flight alarms have been announced over Kyiv.

The city's mayor, Vitaly Klychko, writes that humanitarian aid has been sent to the city of Bucha, which is defending itself from Russian troops on the outskirts of Kyiv. These include medicines, bandages, hygiene products and baby food.

A nearly 60-mile-long Russian military convoy has in recent days approached the capital of Ukraine.”
