What a range of emotions at today's sentencing. From relatives praying for DR and offering him forgiveness, even offering to come pray with him if he wishes, to those who are hurting so much that they cannot forgive, and wish for him to burn in hell. All of these emotions are equally valid. I have no idea what I would feel if such a tragedy were to befall one of my relatives for friends.

I'm disgusted that he would not even look at the victims' families. He is such a coward. But it's par for the course. He still feels he has control over that one aspect. With them begging and pleading for him to look at them, he had the power to deny them the one thing they asked of him. I bet that makes him feel special.

Everyone who spoke today was correct and I hope DR realizes it: he did not win. He did not achieve what he set out to do. There has been no race war, he did not break the community or the faith of these good people. In fact, though he took nine souls from them, he gave them a million people who came out of the woodwork to support the victims and their families and the community at large. The good names and deeds of the victims will live on, much longer than anyone will remember DR's name. Scholarships and building dedications, and people who have been inspired by the victims into going into the ministry, or helping out the community in other ways.

Hate doesn't ever win.

IVe been waiting to post my reply to this. I had been hoping for the DP. He rightfully deserves it, if anyone ever has. But the words spoke by so many today really moved my heart, and I truly hope DR's broken and ugly heart can comprehend what he did, how many people he hurt, and I hope that realization leaves him begging for forgiveness. These are the strongest people I have ever encountered, their unwavering faith and love leave me hopeful for a better world.

This is so beautifully stated, couerfragile. I already had tears in my eyes reading over the profound quotes from the families and your post has just added to my Kleenex count. And I feel the same way you do about Roof's refusal to look at them - disgusted. I can only hope that underneath his self-built wall of hate and anger that the words and feelings expressed by those amazing people secretly effected him. Frankly, I don't see how they couldn't have.

(I was particularly moved to tears by what Cynthia Hurd's sister-in-law said to Roof: "If at any point before you are sentenced and you are in prison and you want me to come and pray with you, I will do that." )

as of January 5, 2017....this is the latest on the felons next trial

http://www.live5news.com

The state trial against the man convicted in a federal court of the Charleston church shooting has been delayed indefinitely.

Judge J.C. Nicholson filed an amended scheduling order Wednesday stating the state trial against Dylann Roof, which was to begin on Jan. 17, has been continued until further notice.

...order implies the reason for the delay is to allow time to prepare for the state case since the federal trial against Roof is still ongoing. That trial is currently in its penalty phase, which just resumed Wednesday after a break from the holidays and a second competency evaluation hearing for Roof.

Solicitor Scarlett Wilson released the following statement Thursday afternoon.
We have been closely monitoring and in constant consultation with the federal prosecutors who have done an outstanding job in the Roof case. Our plans have not changed but we will continue to re-evaluate as the circumstances dictate.

Why in the world does he think he needs a 3 month extension to file for a new trial? Glad the judge shut that down.

What a busy life he must lead in prison to not have enough time in 14 days to request a new trial.

Is he chickening out about getting the death penalty? Why the new trial?

Now that he has received the DP, I'm sure he's back working with his lawyers. That's my problem with the DP, it just never ends, until like maybe 20 years down the road, and even then, it may never happen.
Just a merry-go-round of misery and money.

That's what I like about the plea deal, LWOP, no appeals, lock him away and forget him.

God Bless the family members for saying they forgive him.

By saying that they are also releasing him from their lives and concentrating on what is the most important - honoring the memories of their loved ones.

I was in tears and awe at the family members stoic strength and pure love .

What beautiful lessons they have taught me at this most painful and heartbreaking time of their lives .

I cannot remember the last time my spirit was so moved by genuine words from the heart.

...state will seek death penalty....

THE INTERESTING PART

...case is unusual because he represented himself for part of his federal trial... complicates his appeals per Dunham....
"Somewhere in the appeals process, someone will probably raise the question of whether it was appropriate to allow him to represent himself," he said.

DR... could kick off his federal appeal by petitioning for a second federal sentencing trial, former South Carolina prosecutor Holman Gossett told CNN affiliate WSPA.

"He didn't have any attorneys helping him in the penalty phase, so he may make that motion after reflecting on it," Gossett said. "Then it would go through the process of automatic hearings with appellate courts to see if there's any reason under the law that it should not stand legal grounds."

DR can avoid DP by...1) being over turned in the courts because of Juror misconduct, improper jury instructions or poor
representation by defense counsel
2) lack of lethal injection drugs .... no place in USA that the drugs are made
Article goes on to talk about drugs in Europe and UK

Article also talks about where DR can be held.....also has a video.

MODS....are tried to remove the big PLUG IN area that is blank but it does not show up on the the screen to make changes....maybe if someone has time they can remove the big area? I am sure it is for the video....Thanks.

As far as where he'll be held, I suspect it will be in ADX in Florence, Co (home of terrorists like Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and the Unabomber) due to the Federal charges. From what I understand, this place is a death penalty in its own way. Twenty-three hours in a cell with one hour "outside" (there is tarp-like covering above their heads, the inmates never see the sky even when outside). Basically, it's solitary confinement for eternity.

Knowing that it's highly likely that this is what is in store for Roof, I'm ok if his DP verdict is eventually overturned though the courts. To me, life in "supermax" seems like a fate even worse than death.

I would be very surprised if he won an appeal based on his defense (or lack thereof.)

The judge made darn sure with several competency hearings and asking him plenty of times if he wished to represent himself, or if he wished his attorneys to help him. He was competent and made those decisions for himself, as proven numerous times. Not that he won't try it, but I doubt it would be successful.

I was worried about this at the start of the trial, but you all pointed me in the direction of DR being thoroughly explained to about how pro se works and that he cannot claim ineffective counsel if he chooses to represent himself. You can't have your cake and eat it, too.

I just wanted to note that if it's ultimately decided that DR will be executed in SC, the state still has the option of using the electric chair. As the law stands right now, the convicted inmate chooses which he/she would prefer (electric chair or lethal injection). That being said, if the drugs are still unavailable when his execution is to be carried out, I can only assume the default method of execution would then become the electric chair.
