I have to pause for a moment while reading this thread and commend WS for such a thoughtful discussion. We don't all agree, but we are showing an example here of mature examination of the problem of these school shootings.

I hope it all comes to light, because, while I am a big believer in personal responsibility and not giving your power to other people and letting them play your emotions, for young kids bullying is so impactful. Especially when they do have an online presence(I know we aren't certain that's the case hear) and that is one arena I will be the big mean parent on and not allow her to have her own account on. No computers in the room and phones turned in at night. Back in the day, you more or less escaped your school hood bully when you left school, now, it's constant and inescapable!

ETA: I forgot one of my main things I wanted to say...I hope the children who allegedly bullied him have a coming to Jesus moment and realize just how powerful words can be as you may never know what someone is feeling inside and how deep your words may hurt them.

Two cardiac arrests due to massive blood loss is not encouraging, even with excellent care. I'm very worried he may not make it.

CPR when the cause is massive blood loss, isn't very effective, unfortunately. Very, very sad.

Update from just a short time ago:

As you all know, our nephew Jacob Hall was one of the victims in the senseless shooting at Townville Elementary Wednesday afternoon. The support and love that has been shown by the entire state has been overwhelming and very much appreciated.

Jacob is a very sick little boy and is fighting for his life. Due to the massive blood loss he has sustained a major brain injury. Jacob is in very critical condition, and we are hanging on every second.

Please continue to pray for Jacob and the other victims of this horrible, senseless act. Thank you all for respecting our family as we prepare for the days ahead.

We want to give special thanks to the doctors and nurses and to Travis Page for starting the GoFundMe page so Jacob&#8217;s family can spend every moment they can with him. We also want to thank Pastor David Blizzard and Associate Pastor Tim Marcengill with Oakdale Baptist Church.

this was like god 9 years ago. I knew the logo for FB did not really know much else .

Went in neice bedroom , she was like 8. Saw the logo and she shut it really quick . This was like a week after the cover of TIme or something was like FB killer.

Went to my sister later -- no reaction. Hated dinners with my family! Especially in the "dining room" Ugh, But I shall tell you , if I had kids , you are NOT sitting at the dinner table , sliding food into your mouth while texting and ignoring everyone else .

It is just rude - its like bringing a book to the table

we had an emergency preparedness meeting today at work. Usually these are films and presentations that are done yearly for fires, tornadoes and storms. today the film and training was for work place shootings and hostage situations. In the 25 years I have been here I never thought we would have this kind of training. This is what the world is coming to I guess.

We started the lockdowns after Columbine. I used to believe that all school districts were required by law to do it, but according to some posters on WS, they claim their districts do not do it. We did it six times a year. One of them was to walk to another building which was a Catholic school.

We have always had bomb threats at schools. I imagine that is common. Often it is a kid doing a prank. It is not as easy as in the olden days when there were not all of the ways to trace calls.

With a bomb threat, all children are taken out of the building further away than a fire drill. Bomb sniffing dogs come in and whatever personnel such as LE and firefighters check the building. We did bomb threats 40 years ago so I don't think that is a new one.

Columbine has a following. A poster on another topic posted a reference to how kids emulate and study them. That study said the shooting is never a snap. It is always planned a long time in advance.

I LOVED fire drills , less math or spelling( I know i know a shocker)!!

As a retired teacher, this is what we have to do. Get all children into the designated area in the classroom. (Never knew what we would do on the playground) The designated area is one where a shooter cannot shoot the children through a window or a wall. The wall chosen has to be one that bullets cannot penetrate. And the children cannot be huddled together as bullets go through them like butter. Aim for one and the shooter can take a bunch out at one shot.

If there are windows in the classroom, pull all shades down. Of course, step one is to lock the classroom door.

And of course you have to keep the children absolutley silent so the shooter is not alerted to your presence. I feel there is no time for a fire extinguisher. As a teacher, should the teacher make a decision with a gun when trained officers have issues with that?

As a teacher, we look to finding the positive in each child. Blowing one away who may have been a former student or neighbor seems a bit harsh.

Funny these issues happen rarely in other countries.

OH Human this is awful, I learn so much from you all. Was not born for the dive under your desk for the nuclear bomb, and long out of college for the active shooter stuff..

Like 9 months ago , I went on YOu Tube realizing I really dont have an idea what a "active shooter drill" is . It was traumatic, all I could think while watching it was god these are young people, and there trhowing desks at the door, killing lights bla bla
