Why not do regular fitness challenges and give awards for improvement? (And letters of concern with suggestions on things parents can do to help their child improve.)

I think it's an appalling reality that there is more than one letter, more than one school, more than one district, more than one state participating in this campaign.

When I was in grade school, there was one - yes ONE obese student in the entire school (grades 1-8). Sports and gym class was mandatory. Also, we had three recess periods outside daily. We did not have a cafeteria so everyone had to bring their lunch, except on special hotdog/pizza days.

If a parent thinks that the school environment is not condusive to the health of their child, it is up to the parent to provide alternatives for their child (ie) making them healthy lunches and keeping them active. Not having the time or resources or money is not an excuse IMO - if a parent cannot provide those basic needs, then that person should not have custody of their child.

Too many people these days are blaming everything and everyone but the parents who brought the kids into the world. It is up to the parent to feed and provide adequate activity for the child. It is not the school, taxpayer, or society at large's responsibility. ALL JMO.
