So she was a good ways away...over 40 miles?

The Yankton County Sheriff’s Office says the body of 59-year-old Phyllis Hunhoff was found inside her vehicle in a rural area of the Santee Sioux Reservation in Knox County. Authorities say foul play is suspected.

Family members tell News Channel Nebraska that a hunter discovered Hunhoff’s car about 5:00 PM Wednesday. Knox County law enforcement then contacted the

Would the Santee Reservation be a closed reservation, as in could a non- Native American drive onto the reservation without a member of the tribe? Sorry if this is a silly question.

So sorry to hear this. Hopefully we have an arrest soon. Very sad.

It's not a silly question. Many pueblos and reservations are closed.

This map shows that a major highway goes through the reservation. I haven't found any more exact information about the location, though.

I heard rumor that it was near the town of Center, which butts up right to the reservation.

The reservation has a Casino, so I wouldn't think it was entirely closed.

This is crazy.....did some random dude just get in her car and kill her for $20 or whatever cash she may have had? I don't know much about her personal life but sure doesn't seem risky or have any red flags.....WTH?

My gut feeling is this was not a random attack, she knew her killer. jmo

I saw a news story last week that said The Department of Corrections is planning to release an inmate they’ve classifed as “high risk.” Inmate Moses Waggoner, age 24, is currently finishing up a 3-year sentence for aggravated assault from Yankton County. Waggoner’s sentence expires on September 30, 2018. Waggoner is Native American, 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs approximately 150 pounds.

Thank you. I live on the east coast and am very unfamiliar with reservations other than the Smokey Mounyains as a child. This thread has made me realize I am undereducated about Native American history and culture.

The Santee Sioux Reservation is not a closed reservation. This is not a silly question, as there are some of those in parts of the country, but in this part of the country, the reservations are open. Nebraska Highway 12 goes right through it, so anyone could access it.

I'm sure the police have considered a lot of scenarios, but I wonder if whoever did this didn't leave her body on the reservation because it would create some jurisdictional problems with the tribal government.

This is a shocking case for this area. I truly hope that the truth is brought to light and that whoever is responsible is apprehended and properly punished.

East coaster here also but have been out there and on a couple of the reservations (many years ago) and since then have followed them extensively..
I guess you can say it is a whole different world and most people in this country have no idea about them or how the Native Americans live at all. I love my country but hate what they did to the Native people.
Look up Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Wind River in Wyoming and the list goes on.

But that is not what this thread is about and it is hunting season on the reservation as many of the reservations let outsiders come in for a fee to hunt the land? October, November usually till end of December in most areas depending on what weapons and what game. Maybe an outsider? Someone she knew that was hitch hiking and she made the mistake of being the kind person she was picked them up?
This is so sad, a good woman gone. I will be following this. RIP Phyllis. :(

There was a prisoner that escaped a few days before she went missing. I was wondering if there might be a connection. He obviously would want to get out of the state. Authorities looking for escaped Yankton inmate

That looks like a very real possibility given that her car was found out of state.

ETA - looks like the escaped prisoner has been captured. No longer likely.
