Severe Weather 2013 Spring, Summer and Fall

we are very blessed to have the warning systems we now have. Used to be a lot different.

Now meteoroligists can predict pretty well areas of danger (such as they predicted for this week) and then they can see when rotation begins and tornadoes are forming and hit the sirens. The lead times get better and better.

Problem is, when you live in a area that is tornado alley, storms that could produce tornadoes happen with increasing frequency. Many times the sirens go off and folks look at the sky, see nothing noteworthy and go on about their business. Sometimes and area (such as OK this week) is predicted to have possible serious weather but you can't just hide in your basement or shelter for 48, 72 hours. Life is happening as everyone keeps an eye on the weather.

I don't know the solution. Just observations.

It's a strange phenomenon.

If there is any sizable risk in your county...the sirens go off. Some places, it's more specified than that - maybe by neighborhood or area. But I currently live in a county that if anywhere in the county, all sirens go off. And it's not even for a tornado touchdown...severe weather that could possibly produce one.

It's frustrating - cause the sirens going off is SCARY!!!!!!!!!!! When they go off at night, it's REALLY scary cause you can't see anything coming. If the power goes out and you don't have TV to tell you, you better have a radio!!!

But the local area weather is key to survival. They tell people where the chance of one happening and what time...say, town A at 6:56, town B at 7:01, town C at 7:13, etc.

But even within each town, chances of a tornado touching down are still slim to none. Just the chance.

When they have confirmed touchdown, they definitely make that known. During outbreaks like what happened today...spotters are EVERYWHERE! But it's a large area. Have to rely on radar.

Yes, there is warning if you are paying attention to local news...and are somewhere to be safe. It's when you aren't - outside riding your bike, playing at a park, doing any number of things. Most people in areas where a tornado is possible pay attention, and you can see/feel when severe weather is going to come up.

They are saying that this particular tornado had about 12 minutes of warning. That's not very long if you aren't sitting in your house ready to get into a safe place!!

I'll never complain about hurricanes again. At least we get days sometimes weeks notice/watches.

They recovered 7 children from the bottom of the school... in a pool of water.
They drowned? :tears:
20-30 more children's bodies expected to be pulled out.

Oh God why? Please, why?

Crazy. Never been in a tornado, but I'd think there would be some kind of warning or do they just pop up when on top of you?

There are warnings in some regions. The technology to pinpoint the track is really accurate. The thing is that tornados form quickly and there is not much time to do anything but take cover as opposed to hurricanes where warnings are issued in advance.

I went thru a tornado when visiting my mom for Christmas in Alabama several years ago. We turned down the televison sound during dinner but left the radar on. When we saw the cell heading our way we turned up the tv sound. Meterologists had the track pinpointed to to hwy that is near Mother's house. We took refuge in a bathroom in the middle of the house. I was amazed at the accuracy of the track in AL vs NC technology. (It does sound like a freight train complete with whistles.) Harrowing experience! Her house was damaged but thankfully we were all ok.

I survived the "Green sky storm" back in very early 80's in SE MI. Was driving to unemployment office ( laid off ), radio made odd mention of low clouds. About 9 am. Short stay at Unemployment office. I walked out and my throat was in my stomach. I was terrified. Thought about going back in, then left, thought about stopping at the bar I passed for safety. Long ugly short story. I made to my sisters in shock, honestly don't know how I drove. They never comfirmed a tornado or staight line winds. I know it was a tornado. I heard the unemployment office was heavily damaged, I went back that day. Roof was off, cars were demolished in the parking lot. I had no idea we had bad weather looming. I'm terrified of severe weather now.

Everyone stay safe.

I had a tornado go literally right over my head. Yes it does sound EXACTLY like a train. It was dark.... I was outside (I live in the middle of nowhere so there are no sirens that go off) I heard a freight train and ran in to get my husband--instead of going back outside, we went to the basement. The tornado had gone back up in the clouds just minutes before my house. Scary stuff. And, they just do come out of nowhere sometimes.

That's what has been reported. They said it was in "the bottom of the school." I don't know what that means.

They've brought in a couple excavators. Maybe they were trapped in a basement. Or it could just mean underneath rubble, at the bottom of school rubble.

My daughter and her family are in the county just to the south, Washington, which is also under a tornado warning right now. :please:
