the national weather service in springfield has issued a

* tornado warning for...
Northern dallas county in southwest missouri...
Polk county in southwest missouri...

* until 745 pm cdt

* at 702 pm cdt...a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a
tornado was located near bolivar...and moving northeast at 55 mph.

Hazard...developing tornado.

Source...radar indicated rotation.

Impact...mobile homes will be heavily damaged or destroyed.
Significant damage to roofs...windows and vehicles will
occur. Flying debris will be deadly to people and animals.
Extensive tree damage is likely.

* locations impacted include...
Bolivar...buffalo...goodson...half way...louisburg...plad...polk...
Pumpkin center...tunas...urbana and windyville.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Take cover now. Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a
sturdy building. Avoid windows. If in a mobile home...a vehicle or
outdoors...move to the closest substantial shelter and protect
yourself from flying debris.

They are calling Plaza Towers Elementary a recovery mission, just horrendous. I still can't believe they would give up so quickly.

The tornado warning is for Benton County, not Benton (the town.) They are hundreds of miles away from each other.

Towns in the warning area would include Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, Bentonville, Bella Vista . . .

There are warnings in some regions. The technology to pinpoint the track is really accurate. The thing is that tornados form quickly and there is not much time to do anything but take cover as opposed to hurricanes where warnings are issued in advance.

I went thru a tornado when visiting my mom for Christmas in Alabama several years ago. We turned down the televison sound during dinner but left the radar on. When we saw the cell heading our way we turned up the tv sound. Meterologists had the track pinpointed to to hwy that is near Mother's house. We took refuge in a bathroom in the middle of the house. I was amazed at the accuracy of the track in AL vs NC technology. (It does sound like a freight train complete with whistles.) Harrowing experience! Her house was damaged but thankfully we were all ok.

The TorCon index was really spot on for tornado development the last few days.

So weird! In the three tornados I ran from and the ones we saw chasing I never ever heard the train sound! Only a roar or humongous Whooshing of the wind!

Awful 37 confirmed dead and more deaths expected.

More fatalities expected from the homes nearest the school reported. Bless the reporters, responders, and dogs doing their jobs. So traumatic for them all.

I don't think there's a reported tornado in or very near Springdale. Benton and Washington counties are pretty huge.

Me too. A near apartment complex ought to have a shelter. Sometimes the laundry room is in the lowest level.
