Just a warning to anyone who thinks they have or are catching the flu.
Swine Flu IS apparently popping up all over the US. I was just watching the Olympic Speed Skating trials and one of the USA athletes was diagnosed with it (He has to drop out ). They also said that some others in Salt Lake were showing symptoms.

Just sayin', if you think you have any form of the flu don't try to tough it out, go see a doc and get checked out!
Like this chitty weather isn't bad enough, now we have flu pandemics to worry about....I am HATING this year so far :banghead:

My S/O had H1N1 a couple of years before I met him and he said it was the worst illness he's ever had.

The reason could be alot of holiday travel during November and December and the flu virus just continues to change it's structure and new strains pop out.

Nymeria, thank you, not on the news yet about H1N1 or any flu fears here. I think news over did it the last few years and created panic, that may be why.

Lamby, Oh my! Thank you for telling us about the pleurisy. So happy you made it through! I never thought about it. Did have pneumonia once, I knew it was different from cold, flu or bronchitis simply b/c I could not read a book one morning, couldn't see it. Never knew my lungs were suffering at the time, thought it was my normal seasonal (smoker at the time) issues.

It was a balmy 21 here today after a low of 3 when I went to bed last night. I shut the dog door down so we have to actually get up to let the dogs out! My male shepherd has only really ever known use of the dog door plus he is not the brightest bulb in the shop. He has been trained to go out back in the woods. So, even if you let him out front, he does not poo there. My female shepherd is brilliant and goes anywhere. You would think he would get a clue. Ohhhhh no.

So my daughter had friends over last night as their Friday night hangout was closed due to snow and cold. I was dressed for bed so I did not go downstairs to let the dogs out and told her to. Well she waited a bit too long. OMG. I texted her to check the family room as I could smell something was awry. Next thing I heard, was a lot of activity in the family room with the water running and garage door opening and closing.

When will my children ever listen....

I dont know whether dogs can get frostbite. My female shepherd was outside with my husband while he started the hot tub for my daughter. She came in and couldn't walk. My husband wrapped her up fast and once she warmed up, she could walk again. OMG very scary.

Hi Zuri, we have a Pug who is so tiny she cant walk in the snow! Amy had to make a path for her. Rex will go but runs right back in the house! My Buffy rolls in it. He loves the snow, BUT even at that its been so cold here he goes and comes in right away. I warm his tutters (paws) right away.That would be scary, not being able to walk. I see him sleeping on the nice warm bed and think of the poor animals people leave outside..I could cry. lease:

I think they can. I know we had shepherds years ago and if it snowed they never wanted to come. They insisted on jumping at the shovel as you were trying to clear the driveway. So we had to stop, bring him inside and then sneak out with him crying at the window watching us. LOL They do have a very thick coat but I do think their legs could get frostbitten if they are out too long and the snow is wet.

Sambucol can be bought at most drug stores, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart and health stores. It must be taken within 24 hours of the first symptons of the flu.

Last week, Retroscreen Virology, a leading British medical research institute associated to Queen Mary College, University of London, announced that Sambucol was at least 99% effective against the avian flu virus, H5N1, and in cell cultures significantly neutralized the infectivity of the virus.

Our research has shown that the antiviral effect of Sambucol is not strain-specific,” says Mumcuoglu. “It was effective against all influenza viruses tested. The original formulation of Sambucol is the product we have tested in all cases – both in the laboratory and in clinical studies for the common flu. It is what was also used in the recent experiments in London against avian influenza virus thus any Sambucol already on the shelves is the same as any we would produce now.”

Mumcuoglu, who is president of Razei Bar, first tested her research on patients in the Southern Israel flu epidemic of 1992/3. The results were extremely encouraging. Within 24 hours, 20% of those patients taking Sambucol had dramatic improvements in symptoms like fever, muscle aches and pains and coughing. By the second day, 73% were improved and by day three, 90%. In the untreated group, only 16% felt better after two days. The majority of that group took almost a week to begin feeling better.

I think it depends on the breed. Basically, if there is a frost bite warning for humans, it would apply to pets.

My cats can't tell weather from the patio door, but if it is extremely cold, they go out and come running right back in!

German Shepherds are usually smart dogs but I found that when there is snow on the ground they become suddenly stupid. LOL They just do not want to come in.

Hi, LambChop I think Cocker Spaniels are right up there with them. He wont come in! I have to pull him. The Pugs would never go out given a choice.:floorlaugh:

Too funny. My shepherds love chasing the shovel led snow. Zuri's right front paw is really bothering her. The large pads of their feet are obviously sensitive to the cold, but I had no idea that they could get frostbite. She has been licking her paw, in between her toes. I am concerned and will call the vet today. She seems fine otherwise.

Today it is 32 and everything is a sheet of ice. We use kitty litter for traction as the salt eats the cement on the stoop and walkway. I have not been outside since Monday, due to the cold and wind. I guess I am going no where anytime soon. One would think I could use this time to clean the dust and clutter, paint the walls, organize my unheated closet. hmmmm. Rather be here with you all. I recall reading about protecting dogs paws from the winter elements (Salt, Chemical de- icers, etc.) Could not remember the source so I googled and this was the first hit-

German Shepherds have thick fur. The snow probably feels good on their fur! :snowman:
