Oh lordy, lordy! I hope Juan took this into account as a possibility! He had to have, right??!

I don't think he gets much say in it, he could object but that wouldn't sway JSS much, he did ascertain that she was doing it voluntarily, think that's about as much as he can do.

In my opinion she should have denied Jodi's request to represent herself.

She has the right to represent herself--- :bricks::floorlaugh::floorlaugh:

Inorite???? Wonder what she was thinking.... is it at her discretion or is it a defendant's right?

I don't know but one of the tweets said the judge strongly advised her against doing it, so why couldn't she just deny it? Any atty's out there that can answer? ty

For a month, I have been posting regarding Arias representing herself and no one ever commented. Was it too unbelievable? Sure was lonely over there! Ref: Poll thread "Did Arias take the stand....." and Poll thread "When do you think the retrial will begin?"

The right to self representation is something that the Supreme Court has upheld as a constitutional right. The judge basically has to grant it and can pull it at any time if she seems unable to represent herself. Nurmi and Willmott are advisory counsel, standing in the wings, ready to take over at any time.

OMG something just occurred to me. As her own attorney, does she get to *gasp* call press conferences and stuffs?

"Self-Representation.—The Court has held that the Sixth Amendment, in addition to guaranteeing the right to retained or appointed counsel, also guarantees a defendant the right to represent himself.262 It is a right the defendant must adopt knowingly and intelligently; under some circumstances the trial judge may deny the authority to exercise it, as when the defendant simply lacks the competence to make a knowing or intelligent waiver of counsel or when his self-representation is so disruptive of orderly procedures that the judge may curtail it. The right applies only at trial; there is no constitutional right to self-representation on direct appeal from a criminal conviction.263..."

Ohh im so hoping they change their minds and let cameras in or we get to see something. I would take the day off just to see Juan put her through the ringer:happydance:

So, why did she have to go before the judge with the request? ty

First she had to submit a motion to dismiss counsel, along with her request to represent herself. The prosecution does have the right to argue the motion. The judge has to protect both the court and the defendant by asking a series of questions. Once the defendant answers these questions and still insists on self-representation, there has to be a formal recording of such, dismissing her counsel and appointing CMJA as counsel.

I am right there with you. So, there will be no spectators in the courtroom? What about reporters? ty

Maybe she'll change her mind and let the cameras in.

She's a narcissist, so maybe.

Someone said this morning's closed hearing had to do with the media as well as other matter(s), I wonder if she/they dropped the opposition to cameras earlier today? I am an optimist. lol

I also read she has an investigator and she wants the evidence checked out at Mesa PD and that Juan says he wanted the investigator to contact him first and the judge granted it. I wonder if she wants it all looked at in general or if she is concerned about something specific.

So, no cameras was 'her' idea. I didn't know that. I bet they do change it. I hope so. jmo
