Charterhouse, this happened last night, @ 2:30 am EST. Yes, Autumn is OK. She will stay separate from the others for a few days as a precaution. I don't think anything went wrong until during the birth itself.
My impression only, comparing this to her first born: Kiko came out encased in the sac until he was completely out. I personally never saw the sac this time, nor did I see the water burst. She was in the far stall and it was hard to tell exactly what was happening when I saw her early in the process. Kiko came out head and front feet first; when this one came out it appeared (to me) to be back feet first which is a worry. I think I saw too much blood when they moved the camera off her (JMO) and did whatever they do to help a giraffe during birth. They don't like to interfere and giving a giraffe anesthetic is tricky. The area where Autumn was seems so small for working in (maybe not). I am curious as to what/how they were able to help.
An an autopsy is scheduled. Maybe we will learn more after that.
