I think this whole trial is a terrible shame. It never should have been allowed to take the route it has. Most courts limit testimony about the victim's character to information that is directly relevant to the crime that occurred. This court had no such limitations; it allowed just about everything the defense wanted in with limitations only on information that favored the victim. I have never seen anything like this. It is as if JSS took it upon herself to handle not only guilt and sentencing, but appeals as well...all in one epic proceeding.
There were never any valid reasons for this trial to be this lengthy, not to mention costly. Our system has appeals courts for a purpose and, while I agree all reasonable precautions should be taken to avoid problems down the road, the operative word here is "reasonable." I believe this court has set a bad precedent by allowing proceedings to go so horribly sidetracked. And it isn't over yet--we may see Fons and Geff back again for days on end. Actually, it could be weeks on end depending on what new and improved delays are planned by the defense. In addition, if JM's witness cannot get a report done for another month and DT makes a big deal about that--well, there's another month-long delay right there 'cuz you know the judge is not gonna say no to Nilmott and Wurmi.
This whole thing is an outrageous embarrassment to the system, IMO. The woman is a vicious killer and her victim is exactly that--a victim. They were not famous people. They were not royalty. She deserved her day in court but FGS she did not deserve every possible consideration under the sun including the Constitution temporarily taking a back seat to a killer's demands. How on God's Green Earth did JSS think that would fly? What in the world made her think this case is so special that the normal rules do not apply?
The defendant is a brutal killer. She has been convicted. The task at hand now is to get her sentenced, Judge--the sooner the better!
