I was going to post a photo of my bathroom paint sample stripes that I have been trying to decide on for 5 years but my bathroom has a toilet sitting out in the middle of the room, unconnected, and my husband's pants were hanging on a ladder also sitting in the middle of the room. We had a water leak3 weeks ago and it has been hell ever since. The water leak was under the concrete slab that our house sits on. In Arizona, all houses sit on a slab, Ive never seen a house with a basement here. Anyway, the plumber said we could dig up the concrete and fix it, but it could happen again and again and we should go through the attic and replumb. Doing that, they cut holes through the drywall in the kitchen and bathrooms and brought the new pipes in that way. Things were going well till the plumber's helper fell through the ceiling. I was sitting in the living room and heard a tremendous noise, ran down the hall and discovered legs waving in my guest bedroom ceiling.(the plumber says they nicknamed the guy the plunger) Anyway, I will post a picture of the paint samples when my bathroom looks a little neater. I will try to post a picture of my kitchen during the drywall work. I've never posted a picture on here before, so if you don't see it, I couldn't do it,

Not to cause a panic for anyone , but how is your home insurance? As in will it cover injuries on the job?

Zuri, even you were at risk if that man fell doing work for you. He could make a claim against you. The old joke down here is if someone falls off the roof yell out "you're fired" before they hit the ground.

We had out roof redone twenty years ago, and had a family friend as the main contractor, and he went down to the local work force and hired day laborers that gahter each morning. You get here early for the good workers, and he hired four men to start the next morning. He, his wife, my dh and the workers had to tear off the roof down to the joist and put down plywood because it was a asphalt shingles over the original cedar shakes, and it took all of the all day to rip the old off.

We lost one man because he wanted pizza (we had ordered pizza the day before. I was putting out donuts and coffee and lots of ice tea and gatorade and sandwiches) again and everyone else wanted Popeyes Chicken. The men said he was crazy after he sat on top of the garage cussing and swearing at them in Spanish, and he wasn't picked the next morning to come work. The other three men came back and worked their butts off. They raked and picked up old roofing nails out of the shrubs, they worked all day Saturday until after dark, and when they finished up we gave them each a fifty dollar bonus, and they were very grateful men, but it's a hard backbreaking job and they did a wonderful job. I'd love to have workers like that all the time.

Well a lot has happened since Saturday. James, the dude, had agreed to come today and return my money and finish cleaning the gutters. He was a no show at the 8am start time. Of course. I texted him and he texted back stating he would be here tomorrow "guaranteed" as it was raining where he lived. Well it wasn't raining here...

As you all know, I have been trying to fix my kitchen up and I have gone 12 steps backwards. I had decorated the family room around a beautiful oriental rug; opened up the family room to the kitchen; purchased a freestanding kitchen island that I was going to paint; purchased counter height chairs to go with the island.

Well, I put the oriental rug in the living room which is my DH's cave and it goes beautifully. I took chairs from the family room to accent his maritime theme as he is a sailor/boater. OMG it is beautiful. It went from a little kitschy to yacht club chic. He loves it and I am not getting the beautiful "had to have" rug back. So, there is nothing tying the equestrian style family room together now.

I took the island back as the chairs I bought didn't fit and I didn't like the island as much as I thought I did. We put the old island back in its place so back to square one. I have no idea which direction to go in so I just stopped. The stress from James has put my brain in a condition where the processing is horrific. Damn adrenal glands and hypoxia brain. I am unable to process or think clearly and speech/memory is a problem. So I am deciding not to decide. I will figure it out when I get back to my "normal" self, which is no where near as sharp as my "former" self.

I really appreciate all the suggestions and kind words. I just want James to come back and return my money, pick up his pressure washer and just leave. I don't care about the damn gutters. Way too anxiety producing. Never ever again. I will just be plain mean ;)

I'm so sorry you've had this bad experience, Zurie. We've had a lot of them as well, with building contractors, etc. There are way too many to mention. And, I think you might be right in your decision to just have him return your money and leave the premises. One of my more recent goals in life is to eliminate what I call "toxic" people from my life. This includes opportunists in the service industry, which I also call "bad eggs", lol. I don't know if this guy is that, but if he is I hope you get rid of his sorry arse. That aside, I would love to see pics of your oriental rug change from the family room to the living room and the changes it brought about. I love decorating, it's one of my passions. :)

Hi all!!! Just trying to catch up as have had a lot going on over the last few days. I'm doing ok, other than pulling my shoulder out this morning. :(
I actually haven't had that much pain in a long time, , almost passed out, thankfully the table was right there, it caught me. :)
Anyway, since then I've had more shoulder pain and still have to be very careful how I move my arm. Other than that have just felt really tired and out of kilter all day, but am controlling the pain pretty well with Ibuprofen, (and a little wine, LOL). Anyway, hopefully tomorrow will be better, as I also have some exercises to do for my shoulder from my previous slight episode a year or two ago, and also from my DH who already does them for his shoulder as well. This whole rotator cuff thing is apparently very common, especially with over 50 age range. Anyway, it'll all be up hill from here, I'm sure! I have a positive attitude. :):skip:

I'm back! Ended up with a 'dry socket' and pain has been something else. Went ER Sunday afternoon it was so bad (at the time had no idea what was going on). Tylenol did not even take the edge off the pain. Anyway...ER gave me some Codeine and kept me there for 4 hrs to see how I would react to the Codeine, did OK on it. Still in pain, but surviving and taking Codeine as needed. Feel better this morning (still some pain but bearable). Went Dentist yesterday and they packed the area and give me some antibiotic mouth wash. Says it will heal in about 10 days. Suppose pack it every day so the air does not get into my exposed bone that is showing.

GOOD MORNING :loveyou: :seeya:

Zuri, so sorry you are going through stress over "contractors". I hope it works out for you. We recently hired a local guy to spackle and paint some cracks on the top of our 30 ft walls. He was supposed ro show up by 10am but rolled in by 11, worked two hours, took a two hour lunch to pick up his girlfriend, came back after 1 & left at 3pm. A job that should have been done in a week lasted three weeks. The last straw for me was when he sanded the spackle prior to painting without a vacuuming device, causing white dust to be spread everywhere in the living room and kitchen, including the space between the hardwood floor slats. I lost it. He swept it up with a broom, just the floor, mind you, but there remained white dust everywhere. I vacuumed, etc but still, three months later I see white spackle dust in my hardwood cracks.
Never again. He was the sloppiest, most careless contractor ever. I asked DH to pay him and get him out of our house ASAP. Thus we still need the area done but I couldn't deal with him anymore.
Saw mention of Stephen King's "It". That movie scared me to my bones! Noone but Tim Curry could ever be more effective in that role. Poor Tim,saw a pic of him recently and he has suffered a stroke. He was the best scariest clown ever.

Happy Birthday Travis! RIP.

West Virginia woman who shot alleged attacker may have slain serial killer

"A woman in Charleston, W.Va., may have saved her own life and the lives of many other women, as well, when she shot and killed an alleged attacker in her home last week.
Neal Falls showed up at the woman’s home on July 18 after answering an escort ad she had placed on Backpage.com, according to police. Country's youngest murderer nears prison release

"MELBOURNE, Fla. — Barring any last-minute setbacks, the country's youngest murderer will walk out of prison Tuesday — free for the first time since he was 12 years old.
Curtis Fairchild Jones and his sister, Catherine, then-13, admitted to killing their father’s girlfriend, Sonya Nicole Speights, in 1999...

FREEDOM COMING
Now 29 years old and sporting a couple of prison tattoos — a panther on his left arm and the word “Mob” on his stomach — Curtis Jones leaves prison an ordained minister with very little knowledge of the real world. He also leaves with the burden of a lifetime of probation, which one lawyer described as having one foot on a banana peel and one foot in the Department of Corrections...

Catherine, who found love and marriage via a pen pal, is due to be released sometime next month.."

The Poet Who Was Martha's Vineyard's Best-Kept Secret
Peggy Freydberg began her poetry career at age 90.

"Peggy Freydberg may have been Martha's Vineyard's best-kept secret, but that's about to change. An elegant, beautiful and humble woman, Freydberg began writing poetry when she was 90. She died in March at 107, just weeks before "Poems from the Pond: 107 Years of Words and Wisdom, The Writings of Peggy Freydberg" came to print. But your first question still may be "Who?"..

CHORUS OF CELLS

Every morning,

even being very old,

(or perhaps because of it),

I like to make my bed.

In fact, the starting of each day

unhelplessly,

is the biggest thing I ever do.

I smooth away the dreams disclosed by tangled sheets,

I smack the dented pillow’s revelations to oblivion,

I finish with the pattern of the spread exactly centered.

The night is won.

And now the day can open.

All this I like to do,

mastering the making of my bed

with hands that trust beginnings.

All this I need to do,

directed by the silent message

of the luxury of my breathing.

And every night,

I like to fold the covers back,

and get in bed,

and live the dark, wise poetry of the night’s dreaming,

dreading the extend of its improbabilities,

but surrendering to the truth it knows and I do not;

even though its technicolor cruelties,

or the music of its myths,

feels like someone else’s experience,

not mine.

I know that I could no more cease

to want to make my bed each morning,

and fold the covers back at night,

than I could cease

to want to put one foot before the other.

Being very old and so because of it,

all this I am compelled to do,

day after day,

night after night,

directed by the silent message

of the constancy of my breathing,

that bears the news I am alive.

(Peggy Freydberg passed away on March 27, 2015 at her home in Martha’s Vineyard, 3 weeks after her 107th birthday. )

My younger son and I have had some conversations about the topic of media coverage and all the senseless murders that have been happening lately. :scared: He believes that all the media coverage , cause more copy-cat murders and should be curtailed. Although I believe that the public should have knowledge of all news, I'm beginning to get really concerned with all the slaughter that has been happening and I've beginning to wonder if, maybe, he is correct???

Does Media Coverage of School Shootings Lead to More School Shootings?

"...For years, forensic psychiatrists have been urging American journalists to reform the way they report on these incidents. In a 2009 BBC interview, perhaps the best known among those psychiatrists, Dr. Park Dietz, said: “We’ve had 20 years of mass murders throughout which I have repeatedly told CNN and our other media, if you don’t want to propagate more mass murders, don’t start the story with sirens blaring. Don’t have photographs of the killer. Don’t make this 24/7 coverage. Do everything you can not to make the body count the lead story, not to make the killer some kind of anti-hero. Do localize the story to the affected community and make it as boring as possible in every other market. Because every time we have intense saturation coverage of a mass murder, we expect to see one or two more within a week.”..

What Mass Killers Want—And How to Stop Them
Rampage shooters crave the spotlight, and we should do everything possible to deprive them of it.

"...mass shootings are a kind of theater. Their purpose is essentially terrorism—minus, in most cases, a political agenda. The public spectacle, the mass slaughter of mostly random victims, is meant to be seen as an attack against society itself. The typical consummation of the act in suicide denies the course of justice, giving the shooter ultimate and final control...

Part of this calculus of evil is competition. Dr. Mullen spoke to a perpetrator who "gleefully admitted that he was 'going for the record.' " Investigators found that the Newtown shooter kept a "score sheet" of previous mass shootings. He may have deliberately calculated how to maximize the grotesqueness of his act.
Many other perpetrators pay obsessive attention to previous massacres. There is evidence for a direct line of influence running through some of the most notorious shooters—from Columbine in 1999 to Virginia Tech in 2007 to Newtown in 2012—including their explicit references to previous massacres and calls to inspire future anti-heroes...

How might journalists and police change their practices to discourage mass shootings? First, they need to do more to deprive the killer of an audience: ...

Finally, journalists and public figures must remove the dark aura of mystery shrouding mass killings and create a new script about them: ..."

A disturbed student shoots up his classroom -- and suddenly a wave of mass murder is sweeping through our nation's schools. A young child is taken from her home -- and for months afterward child abductions are frantically reported on an almost daily basis. THE COPYCAT EFFECT review

And on another note:

Public Mental Health Stigma and Mass Shootings

"...The media, be it news coverage or movies, distorts mental illness and perpetuates bias and misconceptions [33]. The non-stop news coverage following the Sandy Hook shooting repeatedly linked mental illness and violence. Misplaced public perception which seizes on mental illness as the proximate and underlying cause of gun violence undermines public safety because it focuses on the wrong problem. Gun violence is a serious social problem which is at an epidemic level in the United States. Over 31,672 people were killed by firearms in America in 2010 [6], a number which places the United States within the upper levels of gun deaths among developed nations.

While the vast majority of persons with serious mental illness are not violent, research points to several factors associated with an elevated risk of gun violence among persons, both those with and without a diagnosed mental illness, among these are persons with a history of drug and alcohol abuse, suicidal behavior, history of domestic violence and/or violent crime[34]. Research-informed public policy that limits gun ownership for populations that are associated with an elevated risk]of violence is a reasonable step toward public safety.."

So sorry many of us are having painful days. You can add me to the list. The last two nights I have bad sciatic pain in my back that goes down to the knee. It only hurts (enormously hurts!) when I lay down, so I have had two sleepless nights. Found some exercises to try out, but I don't know how long it takes to notice improvement. This has to stop. My aches and pains are spreading and making me grumpy. But I am lucky..... it could be something worse.

Coffee, I have heard that dry socket is an awful experience. Glad you got it checked out quickly, before it got unbearable and took longer to heal. Glad the med is OK for you, too! Be well soon.

Spellbound, I had the sciatic pain a couple of months ago. Many trips to the doc and some therapy brought no relief. Then someone told hubby about the BEACTIVE brace that's available at Bed Bath and Beyond. It wraps around and uses Velcro and a disk to hit a pressure point on your calf, sort of acupressure? Took my 20 percent off coupon and picked it up for twelve dollars and tax. I got immediate relief! I wish I had found it earlier before I had a month of four hours sleep at night! Hope you feel better soon!

Ann Rule, Northwest true crime master, dead at 83
Daughter: ‘My mom died peacefully'

"Northwest true crime author Ann Rule has died.

Rule, 83, had been in declining health in recent years. She appears to have died Sunday night at a Seattle-area hospital.
Writing on Facebook, daughter Leslie Rule said her mother had been in intensive care with pneumonia. Rule, a Normandy Park resident, was hospitalized July 19 at Highline Medical Center outside of Seattle.

“My mom died peacefully last night,” Leslie Rule said on Facebook. “She had congestive heart failure and many other health issues.”..."

Thank you for your kind words. Pages, I understood completely when I hired James the risk. I just wanted to give this young man an opportunity, a leg up, a chance. And it has bitten me in the butt. He was a no show again today, with no communication so I will take him to civil court if there is no response to my texts by end of business today.

I don't think he understands verbal contracts are binding. He not only made one with me, he made one with my DH. He agreed to finish the gutters and return the money. I wasn't holding my breath on either of the two, but hope springs eternal. I won't do this again and I will stay with what I know. It certainly has not been worth the stress for sure. What a shame for him as working for me could have been a wonderful opportunity for growth as I know people. However, I also know several lawyers unfortunately for him.

When did commitment and honor become a thing of the past with younger people? I hope I have successfully instilled these morals in my children. If he were my son, he would have honored his agreement, finishing the job he committed to and returned the money. Oh well. Lesson learned at least for me. I doubt this has even phased him.
