Do You Age Faster in Prison?
Science tries to catch up with the problem of ‘accelerated aging.’

"...For years, corrections officials have spoken of prisoners who appear far older than their actual age. In the early 1990s, a few officials suggested to the sociologist Ronald Aday that “the typical inmate in his fifties has a physical appearance of at least 10 years older.” That comment was cited widely by journalists and researchers, and a handful of mysteriously specific claims have floated around, saying prisoners over 50 have a health profile of people 11.5 years older...

Aday says no studies have proven that prisoners age at a specific rate compared to those on the outside. But a slow trickle of studies—including the one Bolano assisted with—have started to show that there is medical evidence behind the idea that at around age 50 prisoners start to contend with the health problems more often associated with people far older..."

As per usual, you have provided much fodder for thought. This was very interesting...

Barbaro is going to go in my Family Room, above the fireplace in a place of honor. I think Shawn captured Barbaro, age 3, Kentucky Derby winner trained by Olympic equestrian athlete Michael Matz, as he would have looked like crossing Rainbow Bridge. Barbaro Reflecting back on the thrill and joy he gave us because he liked to run and was a supreme athlete. There is no doubt in my mind that he would have won the Triple Crown in 2006 he was just that gifted.

I was amazed at the posters, flowers, signs, stuffed animals placed at the front gate of New Bolton at that time while Barbaro was being treated there. The interest and love the nation showed in a horse was astounding. The Jacksons were determined to do right by their horse and give him every possible chance to live a normal life with NO thought of stud fees or the like. They just loved Barbaro, a once in a lifetime horse. Kinda like me and Knox without the fame and fortune, love being the great equalizer.

Life Without Parole
Inside the secretive world of parole boards, where your freedom may depend on politics and whim.

"...America's prisons hold tens of thousands of people like Rodriguez — people primarily confined not by the verdicts of a judge or a jury but by the inaction of a parole board. Michigan is one of 26 states where parole boards are vested with almost unlimited power to decide who gets out of prison when, and why...

A months-long Marshall Project investigation reveals that, in many states, parole boards are so deeply cautious about releasing prisoners who could come back to haunt them that they release only a small fraction of those eligible — and almost none who have committed violent offenses, even those who pose little danger and whom a judge clearly intended to go free..."

New quiz for today:

Are You More Emotional Or Logical?

http://www.buzzfeed.com/anjalipatel/are-you-more-emotionally-or-logically-driven#.koZXvl2jV

I am: Logical

"You’re rational and analytical, and you prefer to carefully weigh each situation before jumping into it. As a communicator, you’re clear and concise, and you’re able to convey your thoughts and opinions with relative ease and precision. When it comes to reasoning skills, you are unmatched."

Yeah, I'm logical, too. But seriously, how many women over a certain age have been able to get by without relying on their street smarts. :)

There is a nationally known artist named Shawn Faust who is local to me. He painted Barbaro in 2008 for the Jacksons, making many trips up to New Bolton to take pictures and study him to capture his essence. The Jacksons allowed him to make prints from the original and I purchased one which he framed for me. He dropped the giclee print by my husband's office this afternoon. OMG!!!! Is this horse not gorgeous!!!

I have long admired Shawn's work and have dreamed of having a commissioned portrait of Knox done by him. My husband told Shawn about Knox's close brush with death, yet again, and asked Shawn to paint Knox. For me. An original. For me.

Shawn's work is in demand and he is generally 6-8 months out, but now knowing how precarious Knox's health is, he is going to go to the barn and take pictures next week. So whether Knox is alive next month or next year, I will have him immortalized like the brilliant Barbaro is here should things work out. How incredible is this!

I am speechless. Even with Prednisone.

A Christmas present from your DH!!! :D

Yep - I'm "logical"!!

Signing off for the nite! :pcguru: Take care everyone! :seeya:

Zuri, so glad for your miracle. Isn't it wonderful to see God in acton? I guess every time Knox ( I knew it had an K ) moved his tail was a blessing in disguise?

He is a gorgeous creature. I love watching horses run. Every muscle looks sculpture, huge veins surging with blood, the length of their stride, and I don't mind the smell of a barn.

Zuri, I always think of horses, and when I think of horses I think of you. This song is always the one in my head when I think of horses.

I got: Emotional

You’re driven by feelings, and you tend to rely on your heart and your gut more than anything else. Your emotional orientation allows you to easily pick up on the feelings of those around you, and you tend to be very passionate and expressive in your communication. Others appreciate your ability to connect with them on such sympathetic levels.

Beautiful song. This is a case where it's plain that all our lives are intertwined.

Before Dan Fogelberg died of prostate cancer, he wrote a lovely song to his wife:

She donated the proceeds to the Prostate Cancer Foundation...

Niner, thanks for the heads-up on a new Scarpetti series. Make sure to let us (me) know if it is as good as her others. I have enjoyed Patricia Cornwell books a lot.

I stress dosed with extra Prednisone yesterday afternoon, knowing I was going to have to think, talk and make decisions that evening. Since my adrenal system is shot, I have to rely on some amount of cortisol from external prednisone. I was still buzzing at 3:00 am, like I was in the hospital. In any time of stress, one can chew through their cortisol pretty fast, but healthy people have enough stored and can make it fast. I just come up empty with no words, confusion, no memory, faulty processing, unclear thinking when I run out. Better living through chemistry I say.

Let's just say I didn't go out today and I didn't dare drive. My DD went to check on Knox and said he looked great! Now at this moment, both DD and DH are sick with sinus symptoms, fever, aches, chills. So they are banned from my presence lol.

Zuri, I am sooo excited that you will be getting the painting of your beautiful horse! Congrats!!

BBM: That was very interesting about the cortisol levels. Is there a way to have it checked? That sounds exactly what I feel like when I get gigantic ally exhausted. It seems I am thinking in slow motion and can't get my words out .... and I burst into tears. Or I am staring at a pot on the stove wondering what the heck am i supposed to be doing with this thing? Oh the joys of CFS at times.

Glad you might be able to avert a setback. (((hugs)))

I Googled Mr Faust and found his website : http://www.shawnfaust.com/
He's a wonderful painter. and doesn't only paint horses, but I think he paints horses mainly because he must love them (like you do):

Horses can live to age 30 and you are not morbid lol. Horses used in sport typically are retired from competition around 15-16 years old, but can typically do lower level, less physically demanding Levels of sport. Broodmares are usually not bred after the age of 18 because of risk of death and complications.

Knox is 10 and if he can make it to 11 then 12 etc I will be happy. He is relatively young and had his first surgery at 6. Most warmbloods don't stop growing until age 6-7, unlike thoroughbreds and other breeds that grow more rapidly.

A friend of mine just put her 25 yo heart horse down due to colic a few weeks ago. He was the picture of health until the colic and was being ridden by her on a pretty regular basis. He didn't look 25 for sure.

Zuri, do these problems occur because the horse is not eating a diet that a wild horse would?

This may sound premature, but has anybody heard from Bernina? This is a woman who ended a years long relationship with an unstable man and she hasn't posted since the Oct 23rd.
Am I the only one really concerned? I do tend to always fear the worst, but I'm really worried about her.

She has a new beau in Phoenix so my best guess is she's doing happy things with him. Don't worry about her. :)
