New Star Trek Series: 14 Captain Candidates CBS Must Consider

"Now that the tribble’s outta the bag regarding CBS/CBS All Access’ new Star Trek series, the captain’s chair is the most coveted piece of real estate in Hollywood the galaxy. But who is really up to the task of following in the bootsteps of predecessors as diverse as William Shatner and Kate Mulgrew?

We have some ideas — in fact, we’re boldly going out on a limb with a few of them — and we suspect you do, too. So, as what is surely destined to be the most closely watched casting search of 2016 gets underway, scroll through our gallery of suggestions below..."

My pick from their suggestions:
Ken Watanabe (The Last Samuri) or, maybe, Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost)

How a group of neighbors created their own Internet service

Powered by radios in trees, homegrown network serves 50 houses on Orcas Island.
"When you live somewhere with slow and unreliable Internet access, it usually seems like there’s nothing to do but complain. And that's exactly what residents of Orcas Island, one of the San Juan Islands in Washington state, were doing in late 2013. Faced with CenturyLink service that was slow and outage-prone, residents gathered at a community potluck and lamented their current connectivity....

The nonprofit Doe Bay Internet Users Association (DBIUA), founded by Sutton, Brems, and a few friends, now provide Internet service to a portion of the island. It’s a wireless network with radios installed on trees and houses in the Doe Bay portion of Orcas Island. Those radios get signals from radios on top of a water tower, which in turn receive a signal from a microwave tower across the water in Mount Vernon, Washington...

Unlike many satellite and cellular networks, there is no monthly data cap for DBIUA users...

DBIUA spent about $25,000 in total to build the network, and an anonymous resident provided the money in a 3-year, interest-free loan. Residents paid $150 to become members of the DBIUA and $75 a month for Internet service, which goes toward paying down the loan. The monthly fees also cover the $900 a month DBIUA pays StarTouch for bandwidth.

DBIUA needed 25 customers to pay the bills and stay afloat. At 50 now, the organization is paying the loan off a bit more quickly. Sutton hopes to lower the monthly price residents pay after the loan is paid off...

“I think so many other communities could do this themselves,” he said. “There does require a little bit of technical expertise but it's not something that people can't learn. I think relying on corporate America to come save us all is just not going to happen, but if we all get together and share our resources, communities can do this themselves and be more resilient.”.."

Cat People Have Some Distinct Personality Traits, Research Says (with video)

"Cats are unpredictable, but that's not entirely true of cat owners. So-called "cat people" tend to share a lot of the same personality traits, as studies have proven having a cat at home can say a lot about a person's character, health and dating life...

While there are great health benefits to owning a pet of any kind, cat owners also earn fewer health benefits than dog owners. And as for relationships, there may be some truth to that single cat lady stereotype. Watch the video above to learn more."

Why We Drive on the Right (or Wrong) Side of the Road

"Driving on the right side of the road is the right way unless you’re in a country like the U.K., Australia, or Japan, right? If you’ve ever had to rent a car in London with a manual transmission, changing gears with your left hand is scary and can feel unnatural — unless you’re a lefty. Yet if you ask the Brits, we’re the crazy ones. So how did the world end up divided into left-side and right-side drivers? You may be surprised to find out that we, the right-side drivers, are wrong. Here’s a timeline of how it all got started..."

'We were living a nightmare': Robin Williams' widow describes finding him covered in blood in his final days as she blames his death on his battle with Lewy body dementia (with videos)

"Robin Williams' widow Susan Schneider discussed the final year of the actor's life in an emotional interview on Good Morning America
Schneider said Williams began exhibiting symptoms of Parkinson's in November 2013 and was diagnosed in May of the next year
She also said that the actor was dealing with Lewy body dementia, a disease that causes a progressive decline in mental abilities
A few weeks before his death Schneider said she found Williams covered in blood after he walked into a door
Shortly before his death his doctors had made the decision that they were going to check him into a facility for testing
Schneider said that she believes Williams' suicide was his way of saying 'No' to being checked into a facility...

WHAT IS LEWY BODY DEMENTIA?
'Lewy body dementia, the second most common type of progressive dementia after Alzheimer's disease, causes a progressive decline in mental abilities.
'It may also cause visual hallucinations, which generally take the form of objects, people or animals that aren't there. This can lead to unusual behavior such as having conversations with deceased loved ones.

'Another indicator of Lewy body dementia may be significant fluctuations in alertness and attention, which may include daytime drowsiness or periods of staring into space. And, like Parkinson's disease, Lewy body dementia can result in rigid muscles, slowed movement and tremors.'
- Mayo Clinic...

Schneider reached a settlement with Robin's children after a bitter battle over his will and estate just last month.

The Academy Award winner stated in his will he wanted his wife to remain at their multi-million dollar home, with a trust account to pay for the mortgage, insurance and upkeep.

But when she filed court documents seeking more money, claiming what she was assigned wasn't enough, she clashed with Zak, 32, from his first marriage and Zelda, 25, and Cody, 23, from his second, who accused her of being 'greedy.'

Schneider will talk about her legal battle with Williams' three children in an interview that will air Wednesday on Good Morning America.

When I worked at the nursing hone, we had a resident who had Lewy Body dementia- she had to wear a helmet to protect her head. She left her head to science so they might study this disease. :(

While He Convalesced, Long Island Town Tore Down His Home :(

"A 69-year-old Navy veteran remains homeless today after a Long Island town tore down his house while he was in Florida recovering from knee surgery.

Phil Williams returned from Florida in August with a new knee and an empty lot after the Town of Hempstead, N.Y., tore down the house where he’d lived for nearly 70 years, since infancy – and where he raised his six kids. The town demolished the house because, according to its engineers, it was unsafe.

Not only was the house gone; all its contents, as well as the detached garage, the driveway and a chestnut tree planted in 1947, were absent, too..."

Cracking the skull open

"Most of our organs can be treated as repairable machines. Why can’t we treat mental illness by simply fixing the brain?

Our understanding and treatment of mental disorders is primitive. Why is that? The burden on our society is huge. A quarter of women will have an episode of depression at some stage in their lives (it’s about half that for men). Most will never reach a doctor or be diagnosed. About 40 per cent of those who do won’t respond to the first antidepressant they are prescribed, and about 60 per cent of those won’t respond to the second. About half of schizophrenics will get better or manage to live reasonable lives: the other half will relapse or never recover in the first place. Anorexia nervosa claims the lives of more patients proportionately than any other mental disorder. But mental disorders are only one category – a rather artificial one – of brain disorders..."

A little song:

And a funnie: :)

Hillbilly Stripper

Cletus is passing by Billy Bob's hay barn one day when, through a gap in the door, he sees Billy Bob doing a slow and sensual striptease in front of an old John Deere tractor.

He performs a slow pirouette, and gently slides off first the right strap of his overalls, followed by the left. He then hunches his shoulders forward and in a classic striptease move, lets his overalls fall down to his hips, revealing a torn and frayed plaid shirt.

Then, grabbing both sides of his shirt, he rips it apart to reveal his stained T-shirt underneath. With a final flourish, he tears the T-shirt from his body, and hurls his baseball cap onto a pile of hay. Having seen enough, Cletus rushes in and says, "What the world're ya doing, Billy Bob?"

"Good grief, Cletus, ya scared the bejeebers out of me," says an obviously embarrassed Billy Bob. "But me 'n the wife been havin' trouble lately in the bedroom d'partment, and the therapist suggested I do something sexy to a tractor."

And lastly, a test:

Reading the mind in the eyes test:

You are shown 36 pairs of eyes and have to choose one of four words that best describes what each person is feeling or thinking - for instance, jealous, arrogant, panicked or hateful.

The average score of around 26 suggests that the majority of people are surprisingly good - though far from perfect - at visually reading others' emotions:

1922 - King Tutankhamen’s tomb was discovered in Egypt -- in the Valley of the Kings. The tomb was hidden under a house that had been erected for workers excavating the tomb of Ramesses IV. King Tut came into power at the tender age of nine. He was pharaoh of ancient Egypt until his death at the ripe old age of 18 or 19 (in 1352 BC). I've seen him the two times he's come to Dallas. It's incredible to see all that gold.

Good Afternoon my SB family!

Pneumonia Update: Thank you again for all your Jingles!
Went to the doctor today and had a chest X-ray and it is clear! I can now go to PT to get stronger, starting off in the pool. I am still oxygen dependent as I get short of breath on exertion, but I only need 2L which is awesome. Hopefully I will deflate as my Prednisone doses are tapered. Nothing fits and I am so afraid my leggings, which are stretched to the hilt, are going to roll all the way down. Now that might cause others PTSD...

I got an email ad from Best Buy and their Geek Squad will come out and fix you up for maximum wifi access. I am calling them today. I think you have to buy their equipment, but I don't care. Comcast has set up my current Wifi and I still have wifi strength issues.

Has anyone ever used the Geek Squad before?

I have used used them in-store and their work was good for me. I had not heard about this "maximum wifi access". Comcast is OK here, but it does not let me take the iPad outside (unless I sit right by the back door). Maybe Best Buy can improve on that. I may look into it. Thanks for the tip.

Microsoft to discontinue Windows 7 and 8.1 next November

Users who want to continue running Windows 7 on their existing PCs need not worry.
