One thing is for sure about SML - the same people that might be around that area in May or June wouldn't necessarily be the same people that are there in the winter months. The Lake is a huge tourist draw and is much more populated in the warmer months than in the winter months.

I agree. And what could that imply about who they were talking to or what they were looking for? IMO, it seems that they must have been talking to year-round residents or checking out properties and surrounding areas in which Raven was known to have stayed.

I think either persons who own property and rent it out to find out if they rented it to Raven during a particular time. Or persons that own and live on the lake year round. And possibly speaking with persons who work in the local convenient-type stores around the lake - gas stations, stores, etc., and possibly anyone who rents boats, water jet skis, etc.

hmmmmm....in the beginning of the sml discussion, it never occured to me that raven could have been there for a prolonged period of time.......( a rental, for the weekend etc............but yes, entirely possible, especially if he had told janet he was instead going to a vx meet------that he didn't attend --as we know from that vx board--he said he'd come to many, went to one ?)

..my own thoughts on the sml thing , thinking that he had driven out there following the funeral, ( on his "day off") was that he might have chosen that area as a " dump the murder weapon ( stolen laptop ) drive"........in which case it would still be important if anyone saw him up there during that time frame..............

This is my thought also......rent a boat or jet ski and take a murder weapon and laptop out to dump in the middle of the lake. That's why I think they may have been trying to locate rental companies - check over their rental records for that time frame.

This was my thought also, I just heard the information, but not sure what they were looking for exactly and exactly why this was important, I think of Lake, murder weapon, clothing, evidence being dumped. Don't know how deep the lake is, don't know what it would take to dredge it, sonar, etc. but that would something that I hope LE looked into.

My thought though is there are HUNDREDS of Lakes in the NC area even on the way to Smith Mountain Lake, so maybe it was something to throw LE off, it would be hard to search every single lake out there, because of the amount of them, but I really do wish I knew the exact significance of Smith Mountain Lake.

With cell phone technology and roaming and things like that, maybe LE in reviewing his records were able to "triangulate" and determine by the cell phone towers where he was during that time.

Would be very interesting to learn about about why they (LE) were there.
Better yet, why RAVEN was there.

Interesting possibility. I'm a moron when it comes to cell phones so I was surprised to learn last week (during that horrible murder case out of New York) that cell phone location can be traced, even if no calls were made to or from the phone.
