I'm thinking that SD ripped off Tongo re the money paid, and that in turn Tongo ripped of Qwabe and Mngeni. Maybe he doesn't want to admit it and that accounts for some of his evasiveness. It might not go down too well in the prison.

I think defence is trying to dismantle Tongo's presentation of himself as a hardworking innocent not involved in any criminal activity previous to Anni's killing.

So S.D. arrives at the airport and the first person he meets is the driver who takes them to the hotel. You would expect that he would have got to know Tongo a little better before asking him to arrange a murder.
Before S.D. Set off for S.A. He must have had intentions to have Anni murdered, but to approach the first person you meet is weird. It is not as though S.D. Had gone to an area where the down and outs are and desperate for money. Wasn't he worried that Tongo would report him for making such a request?

Dewani was familiar with SA. I wonder if he knew that unlicensed taxi drivers around the airport tend to be desperate for money and likely to be invvolved in criminality? Not saying it's so, as I don't know. Just a guess.
