knowing what we know about VB’s wife (her being in shock on the phone, their family dynamics possibly being quite conservative, him being a creep who is capable of violence and even murder) for now i just feel bad for her! i do wonder why she was in the car with all these suspicious things, but for now i wonder how much agency she had in this situation and how much she knew.

if it turns out she was cheering his actions on i will change my tune of course!

I think the prosecution can only make charges of second-degree murder in Minnesota (same in Ohio and some other states) so that is why the charges are, for now, second-degree murder. Minnesota appears to require that only a grand jury can charge someone with first- degree murder.

So the prosecution initially will charge a suspect like VB with second-degree murder and then present the case to a grand jury which can indict for first-degree murder. JMO from what I've read online in doing some quick research on this.
Its in the constitution that a grand jury approves indictments for major crimes.
Because grand juries almost always indict on the recommendation of the DA, many states moved the process to the courts as a check on unlimited DA power, with the intention that a judge was a more able to be objective about a DAs charges.
This came up weirdly in the prosecution of Fotis Dulos who killed his wife Jennifer Dulos in Connecticut. The defense attorney argued he had been denied his constitutional right to have an indictment approved by a grand jury, not from the courts.

First-degree murder charges are expected against Vance Boelter in the killings of Melissa and Mark Hortman, the local prosecutor said.

Boelter was initially charged with two second-degree murder counts and two attempted second-degree murder counts in a document filed Saturday, only hours after the homicides. “These are the highest charges we can file by complaint, and it needed to be done quickly to get the warrant out,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said in a news conference.

“Mr. Boelter was taken into state custody, and our office intends to pursue first-degree murder charges against Mr. Boelter,” said Moriarty.

It’s odd to me too.
For me, if I had no prior knowledge of his plot and woke up to that news, the first people I call is LE. So they know I’m not a part of it and can protect me.
Why LE wasn’t at her doorstep before she had a chance to run off is strange to me too.
I honestly can’t see anyway to explain away a weapon, cash and passports under the circumstances.
If I’m not mistaken she was stopped at 10 am. This was long before anyone was named a suspect. We don’t know what she knew at that point. imo. Remember, he didn’t divulge to his room mates what he had done in order not to implicate them. My hunch is he didn’t tell his wife either.

Has there been any update on what the wife was doing when they stopped her?

He appears to have changed clothes and picked up a backpack of stuff, so maybe he thought he had enough of a head start to pick that up and get going, but LE were onto him quicker than he thought. I think LE did a great job of concealing how much they knew, and how close they were to catching him, lured him into a false sense of security and probably trapped him in a perimeter.

Very interesting that he is still alive, seems like this kind of criminal would usually take their own life?

He probably thinks he's a hero.

Vance Boelter, the man accused of shooting two Minnesota lawmakers, is in federal custody, according to a Justice Department official.

He was turned over from state law enforcement Monday morning, the official said.

Boelter is scheduled to appear in federal court Monday afternoon to face charges.

the fact that her first instinct was possibly to run - bothers me greatly. If she had no agency you would think she would run to, not from authorities, because at last - safety.

IF she had no agency. I will straddle the fence on the topic of her behavior for now. I find it troubling.

There are a lot of women on this list!

Yes I noticed the amount of women as compared to men.

He seems to have a problem with women, more than men.

to be honest, i wonder if that’s just because most women’s rights / pro choice advocates are women?

though i don’t have a problem believing he hates women either way

I am going to say he's a misogynist if he's rabidly anti-abortion. The men who want to control women's bodies mindset.... Which fits right in with the list, sadly. MOO.

At best, I think they were both sympathetic to this "cause".

Were they separated? I'm unclear on him being married and having a home but also having roommates.

Interim US attorney Joe Thompson says Vance Boelter went to the homes of FOUR Minnesota politicians Saturday morning w/ the intent to kill them. FOUR. Not two.

After going to the Hoffmans, he went to a second politician's home Thompson isn't naming; they weren't home so then he went to the home of a New Hope senator (unnamed) but a police officer also went there to check on the senator, and saw him in his SUV. He did not respond & left.

Wendy Thomas said she was driving shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, after stopping by a friend’s house to get a phone number, looked to her left and there he was, the most wanted of men in Minnesota.

She knew at that moment it had to be him, Vance Boelter, the subject of a two-day man hunt on allegations that he shot two state legislators and their spouses in their Twin Cities area homes.

“He walked toward the culvert, and he squatted,” she said, thinking her gaze must have made Boelter, dressed in black and muddied, lower his profile.

one of the politician's wasn't home
the other one was a senator
LE actually saw him down the road parked with his lights on. pulled up beside him but he just stared straight ahead so LE proceeded to the senators house.

So the reports we saw but couldn't talk about were true! Thank God they are alive today!

As country life would have it, Thomas and Boelter crossed paths from time to time — under friendlier circumstances than Sunday night’s.

“This is crazy,” she said. “I did not think it was him.”

Thomas described Boelter as “more quiet and kept to himself. I know his wife. … I brought over some wood, and they were grateful. We had them over for a hog roast."
