Per the Federal Press Conference on how the Hoffman shooting occurred, based on security camera footage: (Clarifications, differences, or additions from the probable cause affidavit listed in italics)
  • VB repeatedly knocked on the front door, shouting, "This is the police! Open the door."
  • Both Hoffman and his wife came to the front door
    • PC doc says 'one or both of Sen. and Mrs. Hoffman')
  • When they opened the door, VB shined a flashlight in their faces, stating that there had been a shooting reported in the house
  • VB asked them if they had any weapons
    • PC doc says Sen. Hoffman stated that there were, but they were locked up
  • When VB lowered the flashlight, the victims realized he was not a police officer, shouting out, "You're not a cop! You're not a police officer!"
  • VB then announced "This is a robbery" and forced entry
  • Hoffman attempted to push VB back out of the home, to which VB then shot him repeatedly, followed by shooting his wife repeatedly
    • PC doc says that after Sen. Hoffman was shot, Mrs. Hoffman tried to shut the door on VB, who then shot her repeatedly
  • VB fled the scene, and the Hoffman's daughter called 911
    • Appx 2:06 AM

Vance Boelter, the 57-year-old accused of killing one Minnesota lawmaker and her husband and injuring another and his wife, is facing both federal and state charges.

He’s currently in federal custody. Acting US Attorney Joe Thompson said Monday the federal case will likely proceed first, but the state charges remain in place. Boelter could be eligible for the death penalty for the federal charges.

Here are all of the charges Boelter faces, and the maximum sentences if convicted:

Federal charges:

  • Count 1: Stalking state Rep. Melissa Hortman using interstate commerce (maximum: life in prison)
  • Count 2: Stalking state Sen. John Hoffman using interstate commerce (maximum: 20 years in prison)
  • Count 3: Murder of Melissa Hortman with a firearm (maximum: death penalty, if capital punishment is sought by prosecutors)
  • Count 4: Murder of Mark Hortman with a firearm (maximum: death penalty, if capital punishment is sought by prosecutors)
  • Count 5: Firearms offense in the shooting of Melissa and Mark Hortman (maximum: life in prison)
  • Count 6: Firearms offense in the shooting of John and Yvette Hoffman (maximum: life in prison)
State charges:

  • Count 1: Murder in the second degree
  • Count 2: Murder in the second degree
  • Count 3: Attempted murder in the second degree
  • Count 4: Attempted murder in the second degree
Additionally, Boelter will face first-degree murder charges in Minnesota, the Hennepin County prosecutor said. Minnesota does not have the death penalty, so the maximum sentence would be life in prison without parole, if convicted.

“It is common practice for the office to charge second-degree murder to secure a warrant as quickly as possible, which occurred in this case,” says a news release from the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office.

Per the Federal Press Conference on how the second, attempted assassination in Maple Grove occurred, based on security camera footage: (Clarifications, differences, or additions from the probable cause affidavit listed in italics)
  • VB rang the doorbell at appx 2:24 AM
  • Was dressed as LEO, wearing tactical vest & body armor, carrying a firearm and flashlight, and still wearing the silicon mask
  • VB loudly said, "This is the police. Open the door. This is the police. We have a warrant."
  • State representative was not home, on vacation, so VB left

Per the Federal Press Conference on how the third attempt, in New Hope occurred:
  • VB parked in the street in the look-alike police SUV, down the street from the actual residence
  • Appx 2:36AM
  • New Hope police dispatched an office to conduct a wellness check on representative's residence
  • Officer saw VB's SUV parked at the scene down the block with the lights on
  • Upon seeing VB's vehicle, the Officer thought that another police officer had already been dispatched to the scene
  • Responding Officer pulled-up next to VB's car, rolled down her window, and tried to speak with VB. Officer says that VB didn't respond, simply stared straight ahead
  • Responding Officer proceeded to State Senator's home, waiting for other LEOs to arrive. By the time they did, VB had left the scene

Per the Federal Press Conference on how the fourth attempt, the assassination of Melissa Hortman, occurred:
  • Appx 3:30 AM, VB arrived at Hortman residence. Parked in their driveway with the vehicles emergency lights flashing
  • VB approached the home, wearing the same silicon mask and donning the same gear as mentioned previously
  • Before he entered the home, two officers arrived at the scene. They had been dispatched to check on Hortman, following Hoffman shooting
  • When responding officers arrived, they saw VB standing outside the residence. When VB saw the officers exiting their vehicle, he drew his weapon and fired
  • VB then rushed into the house through the front door, "firing into it"
  • VB repeatedly fired into the house, and upon entering, murdered the Hortmans.
  • Responding Officers fired at VB as he was entering the home, but he escaped out the back
  • VB discarded his 9mm, along with body armor and mask behind the home as he fled

In the charging doc, it sounds like the Hortman's were killed while LE was at their home? Am I understanding that correctly?

There is a picture of VB outside the home, he is decribed as entering the home, then two separate sets of gunshots are heard?

They didn't realize at that point he was not one of them?

Based on the PC and Charging doc, this sounds correct. They didn't mention it in the PC, but I believe it was mentioned previously that the responding officers actually saw VB shoot Mr. Hortman.

Edit: Corrected the victim's name.

At 7 am, he met someone at a bus stop, asked to buy his ebike. Went to man's house where he asked to buy his Buick as well. Went to the bank, withdrew all $2200, paid the man $900 for his bike and Buick.

Later, a figure riding an bike was reported near Green Isle...

"Dr. VLB" left a confession note to the FBI in the car.

I think I may be confusing the two events - Hortman vs. Hoffman?

Mrs. Hoffman tried to close the front door on him….that’s why the door had so many bullet holes. Unfortunately eight of those bullets still got her.

Who sells a car and an ebike to a random stranger for $900? That part of the story doesn't make sense to me.

Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, who both were shot more than once Saturday, are “incredibly lucky to be alive,” they told CNN affiliate WCCO on Monday.

Here’s the Hoffmans’ full statement:

“First and foremost, John and I hold a deep and profound gratitude for the work of our law enforcement agencies and the public for their help in bringing the suspect to justice, while diligently keeping our communities safe during this extremely difficult and senseless event.

“John and I are both incredibly lucky to be alive. We continue our healing journey and are humbled by the outpouring of love and support our family has received from across the state and our nation.

“There is never a place for senseless political violence and loss of life. We are devastated by the loss of Melissa and Mark (Hortman), and our hearts go out to all those who knew and loved them both. We are always at our best when we unite together.”

Agree, but flight with those things sounds hasty not planned.

Snipped from page 14, 15 of the charging document - linked above.

Sounds like she has enough information to fear for the safety of herself and kids. But not enough to know exactly why "people coming to the house armed and trigger happy" would be arriving. He's telling her to leave.

So until or if - she's arrested and charged with a crime related to the murders her husband committed. IMO, she is a victim and should be treated as such.

Arraignment at 1:30 in Federal Court. Per KARE11Live, VLB is in the custody of the U.S.Marshalls.
