My suspicion as well, based on his comments. He's going to accuse the victims of being part of some ridiculous conspiracy scheme. It will be the kind of fantasy these cult members come up with to justify their violent actions and to keep other cult members stirred up.

He doesn't strike me as someone working with some kind of cult, he strikes me as more of a lone wolf. I don't think even his wife knew what he was planning and going to do. Nor did his best friend from elementary school. So if it is a cult, it seems to me that it was a cult of one.

Not an actual physical cult, but a group of people with similar beliefs who lose touch with reality and embrace increasingly extreme views. Not to turn this political, but the other poster is referring to an increasingly large group of people that have been constantly fed propaganda and conspiracy theories that portray their political opponents as evil people who hate their country and need to be destroyed, etc. Eventually this can lead to 'extremist action' aka violence, toward 'the others'. That is what VB apparently believed he was doing - he "went to war" against these perceived enemies.

So we're basically talking about the possible motives of people like Ryan Roth who tried to assassinate President Trump on one of his golf courses, and the 66-year old who attempted assassination of members of Congress on the Congressional baseball team and nearly killed Representative Scalise.

I agree that the demonization of our political opponents in the U.S. these days is very dangerous. At this time, however, I don't think we know if that was the motive of the MN shooter, and I hope we will find out at some point during the investigation and trial.

Bless his heart and I always mean that sincerely. I'm glad he's able to go home and begin his long recovery. He was very seriously injured. No doubt it will take a very long time for all of his family to recover, both in body and spirit. Wishing them the best.

Yes, I think the important part about cults is that they aren't natural, spontaneous arising of similar thoughts by like-minded people (however much disturbed we judge them).

The real issue is that they are deliberately and cynically created as a power, sex and money grab by their leaders. The leaders are deliberately exploiting the weaknesses of their followers for their own personal and unshared benefit.

For eg, you and other like-minded people on the internet can believe in a conspiracy theory that, for eg, the Illuminati are controlling world events. But no one has love-bombed you to create your unwavering devotion to them as a superior being, demanded that you give up everything to go live on their compound, give them all your money, and live entirely according their dictates, no matter how absurd, that you cannot change your mind and leave without severe recrimination, etc.

Fortunately, cults are 'rare', but unfortunately they really do exist and are going on.
