JDB, I wasn't questioning your understanding of Toby Keith. My point is we don't really know what the DC might be willing to do if they were welcome to do so; I seriously doubt they have "refused" to perform for the troops. They have said nothing against the troops.

Ohh here we go agian!! When they say someting about the Commander and Chief that ia against the TRoops. They had the chance on 60 minutes to say they support the troops . Guess what no it was all about THEM

Dixie Chicks announce tour dates
Group’s 43-city tour starts July 21 in Detroit

The single “Not Ready to Make Nice” has been getting country-radio airplay and was listed at No. 50 on this week’s Billboard chart after peaking at 36.

Peaking at 36 and falling down to 50 already?  Obviously people aren't ready to forgive them.

Hmmm...I wonder if their "charming" 60 Minutes interview had anything to do with their song's present ranking...

I love that song. Toby doesn't use the stage to stand up there and enlighten us on his political views. Yes he sings them and that doesn't bother me. I just don't want to go to a concert and have the musician stand up there talking instead of doing what they are getting paid for...singing. I could give a rip what their political viewpoint is.

I'm sorry, but it's not the same thing. I support the troops for what they are doing, they didn't just up and decide to go fight a war on their own. It's who sent them that deserves the criticism.

And maybe they did acknowledge they supported the troops but 60 Min. edited it out. Isn't that a pretty common (sneaky) tactic?

So ultimately it's the badmouthing of the president you resent? That much I can understand (though personally I don't think this president has been "badmouthed" nearly enough).

But I don't understand the inherent distinction you find between speaking an opinion and singing it. And I don't understand why you think the Chicks are unique in speaking their views. JDB just gave us examples of political speech by Toby Keith.

The people at the Chicks concert paid to hear them sing. They get up on the stage and out of the clear blue Natalie makes the remark...she is ashamed that she is from Texas because that is where our President is from or however she stated it. Did the people who were there to hear them sing ask her how she felt about being from the same state Pres Bush is from? Did they really care how she felt about it? I doubt it. That whole thing doesn't even make any sense to me. What was her purpose anyway? None that I can see.

At least when Toby sings his songs he has something to say and a purpose behind writing the song. He wasn't even going to release "Red, White, and Blue" but he played it somewhere for the troops and a top dog General contacted him and asked him to release it so he did. He was afraid of the controversy it would create. But like JDB said....he wrote the song in honor of his dad and he does explain it before he sings it on stage. JDB did not give examples of any political speech Toby has given. You do tend to twist things around to fit what you are saying.

The DC have said and continue to say plenty on our soil. The argument that a single sentence pronounced in Britain proves "cowardice" is bogus.

Funny how the DC are indicted for both (a) speaking too boldly and (b) being too timid. They have refused to back down despite death threats, the loss of millions of dollars and the departure of thousands of fans.

Where is the cowardice?

If my memory is serving me correctly...and it doesn't always...the Dixie Chicks made that statement in England....came back and jumped all over Toby because of "The Red, White, and Blue" went on TV where Natalee was going to say she was sorry but she...they...spent that time crying and carrying on. Then they disappeared for the past THREE YEARS...I believe...so they backed down for 3 years, lost millions of dollars...if anyone would have bought their CD's...and they lost fans. Three years later here they come picking up where they left off. They are either strong willed or stupid. If they were smart they would zip it up because they aren't doing their careers any good.

Yeah, I said "maybe". I don't claim to know it for a fact.

But people can still support the troops but not the President. Unless you know of some law that says otherwise.

No you are wrong. It is the fact at least in my eyes that like the president or not. They were out of line. They had no courage to say it on US soil. They said it when they were a broad. An like it or not I have heard from soliders that were serving MY COUNTRY when they said it. ANd they took it as a slap in the Armed forces face. And don't even get me started on Sheehan.

You are so right. Don't get me started on Sheehan either..lol. From what I have read about her son he was a devoted service man and is probably rolling over in his grave over the things his mother has done and said.

If a singer or group from England came over here to put on a concert and they stood up on the stage and said "I'm ashamed to admit that I'm from England and so is Tony Blair" we would probably boo them. What would we care how they feel about Tony Blair? It wouldn't even make sense for them to stand up here in the United States and make a remark like that. That would be so classless.

I think there's alot of anger and frustration going on in our country right now....kind of like when a marriage goes bad you look for who to blame and make scapegoats.

Let the market decide - if the Dixie Chicks offend and have bad taste people won't buy their stuff; if people aren't that offended and the music is good, they might buy it. Kind of like Tom Cruise tho', if they keep on making fools of themselves, they will crash and burn.

How important are they?; there are hungry children out there, elderly alone in nursing homes, and puppies that need adopting.

How do you know this? As many have pointed out, given the way this pseudo-controversy has been worked by Fox & Co., what makes anyone think the DC would be welcome?

Maybe the reason we can't reach any agreement on this subject is that one side bases at least some of its arguments on imaginary information.

I would bet money that Toby Keith never has a hidden agenda when he does anything for the troops. He doesn't need to have hidden agendas to boost his CD sales or his concerts. Every song he sings is a instant hit. His concerts are sold out.

For years entertainers have been going over to entertain the troops because we always have troops somewhere outside the USA. Have the Dixie Chicks ever gone and given some time to our service people? They had lots of time before they made their little speech in England.

This is nuts, JDB! You do know how a 60 miinutes interview is done, don't you? They take hours of footage that are then boiled down to a few minutes. Neither you nor I have any idea what all was said.

But even if we assume they didn't mention the troops in an interview the subject of which was their career at present, are you now condemning every interview that doesn't include an anouncement of support for soldiers?

Or are you just reaching for any reason to condemn the Dixie Chicks?

When your country (in this case, actually, the President) is wrong, it needs to be blasted. Anything else is undemocratic.

Okay. But the statement at issue consisted of (by my count. which is an estimate) 14 words. Good luck finding a concert where the singer doesn't speak at least that much.
