The Murder of Janet Abaroa #1

Just some thoughts... everything we're parsing here where Mr. Abaroa is concerned seems to come back to identity. Who Raven is. I believe that we all go through periods of identity crisis; I had a major one about age 13 that transformed me from the fat nerd with glasses to, on the surface, a sleek jock with muscle to spare. Then in college I had a couple more, casting about to find my moorings again. For me I have come to understand as I near 40 that all of those periods were about that in me which now has it's expression in writing and performing was trying to find it's way out. Once it did, my identity, my core self was sure and settled -- my confidence went up, my anger went down. In the end, it appears I am happily the (now slightly) overweight nerd with glasses after all.

It's funny though -- what worries me sometimes about studying crimes or possible crimes -- it always bears repeating that Raven Abaroa is innocent till proven guilty -- is how I can find a way to understand some of these maniacs who commit them. Understand -- NOT empathize. My identity crises led me to act like an idiot and treat the women I dated badly, in the sense of doing 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 things like breaking up over the phone, or in one case, fooling around with someone else. Bad things, but benign in comparison to murder.

Raven seems to be constantly casting about for himself. There's Ina’maqki’u wi’dishi’anun. There is finding himself in Harry Potter symbolism. The changing of the site from "Our" -- his and Janet's -- to "My," with Janet barely in sight.

For some of us that is a natural, if difficult phase of our personal path. For others it's the most dangerous time possible in the lives of those around them. Psychologists tend to agree that with some people, this loosely moored sense of identity adds up to something called borderline disorder. It's a scary diagnosis -- I dated a girl who was a borderline. Borderlines don't have split personalities; there is great debate right now as to whether dissociative identity disorder, or multiple personalities, exists at all -- borderlines are also not psychopaths; they do have feelings. But the borderline's emotions are not nuanced. They are primitive, and infantile. Anger is not sublimated into activity or sniping at the traffic around you on the road; it's vomited out in weeping, sudden, terrifying rages. The borderline's emotionally stunted nature leads them to feel a void. Their pattern in life is to have always troubled, too-intense personal relationships. Borderlines will typically abuse themselves; the epidemic some of you might have heard of among some young teen girls and women of "cutting" -- cutting is a borderline symptom. The girl I dated was a stealth self-abuser. She had one too many accidents that caused cuts on her hands and arms. As the relationship continued I discovered to my dismay that she was a masochist -- I need not detail that.

Not all of them self-abuse though; some turn that internal need for violence outwards. Pain makes them feel something. Who is to say that some people find that need met by overly-intense athletic pursuits, therefore masking their psychological disorder with something socially acceptable?

I am seeing little and big signs of that loose sense of identity in Raven.

One statistic I read recently stated that in prison populations there are a larger number of psychopaths, as you'd expect. But among the number who are not diagnosed psychopathic, you are likely to find the borderlines.

I don't know how much sense this all made, but I was trying to put some thoughts together about the portrait we've been painting as we pick this stuff apart in this thread.

I have to say, too -- I've started threads at other boards, but I've never had one take off the way you guys have run with this one. Thank you all for validating my feeling that this case was mysteriously neglected by larger news outlets. You've let me know that I do have a feel for this stuff after all, something the farce of Jennifer Wilbanks' disappearance caused me to doubt.

I've read every post and most of the blogging and news stories and I found some things that also caused me to raise a brow...

On the archived files of Raven's site, he thanks his "dear friend" ... a female. Wondering if there was anything going on between them? He thanks for helping him create his website ... this is a link to her site.
www.jenique.com

Additionally, the timing of their jobs and new jobs?
They both left their jobs in January.... within a few months, Janet found a new job. That would've been in March. It was reported in the link two posts ago that a co-worker of Janet's emailed her. When she didn't respond back, they went to check on her. I've been at my job several years and none of my co-workers write to check on me, but she's only been there a month or so... wonder if she confided in a colleague any fears she had of someone stalking her or regarding her husband.

After reading Raven's blog, yes, he seems fixated on himself, his tough life and money.

Raven did well in soccer when he was young. I thought they met at college so I assumed he went to college but maybe didn't graduate? He was attending night school full time, I read on his website, so he was working on a degree.
I'm obsessed.. Went back to the beginning of the case thread and started reading all over again. Found out that the "jennique" is named Jennifer Lugo Garcia.
This is public info on her website.. thought I would give us something new to search..In the AM!!

good stress list, ThinkofLaura, and I agree, stress was mounting.

For a couple short on cash, i would think that the pets and the internet access could go for a while ... he seemed to work on the internet quite a bit and from the little bit of searching i have done, it seems he posted on a few sites... one about cars, then there was classmates, his site, and his interest in the stock market which is huge online ... who knows if he lost any money in the stock market.

Please, if you can, do a search on the property situation. I don't know how to do that or I would help ya! Thanks!
This is all opinion only, except for the paraphrasing from his site and the item taken in the property search.
I just found this post of yours, and had missed the gambling question/ speculation the first time around. Sorry, because I do think it has a lot of merit.

Eerily enough, I had again been debating all day yesterday on whether to post my suspicions that he may have been trying to " earn" back money in a hurry through the speculative and extremely high pressure area of stock market trading known as " day trading".
I don't know a huge amount about day traders, except that they can sit at a computer and hedge many very small stock calls from minute to minute. They don't have to have a lot of money to start, but most become addicted and debt-riddled in a very short period of time because the short term stock market investments are horribly risky and almost pre-destined to fail. It doesn't seem like a large amount of money to lose at first, but it adds up in a hurry.

IF a person is a narcissist, they probably think they would make really great stock decisions..

Also, it's a variation on gambling, IMO, and a " get rich scheme" which has led to inveatigation of the regulations within the day trader industry in the past 3-4 years.

I had been contemplating what a self-absorbed head of a household with an infant and a wife to provide for might have been desperate enough to do legally, either before or just after the firing for the claim of embezzlement.
I think there's a possibility that he was into day trading, and was losing big time, money that they obviously didn't have the luxury of losing.
He could have owed more than he could pay back, except with a life insurance policy and a seemingly solid alibi.
Or maybe Janet, who appeared to be a straight arrow, hard working person, found out and confronted him on the night of her murder.

I do know that a Palm Pilot was seized in the home search. I did a screen freeze on the TV news station video which waved the inventory list around a bit. It's item #2. Maybe he was shrewd enough to keep all his stock trading on his Palm Pilot, not on a shared computer.. and Janet got curious and checked out some numbers, or maybe he asked her parents for a large loan under some other pretense, didn't make any effort to pay them back, and they asked Janet about it.

If the reports about email related to the murder early on are true, perhaps they relate back to something of this nature. I am speculating once again, but the police are not calling this a random crime and I don't think it was a suicide by any stretch of the imagination, so I am going with theories which could explain a total meltdown and unleashed rage with someone who wants to be " perfect" is discovered to have done something extremely unwise- again.
I also keep remembering that Raven was very out of touch with the reality which was his life at the time, and his blog entry about having made unfortunate business and personal decisions in the past and starting over.. Maybe he saw this as his way to succeed. From what I have read, the addicted day trader thinks their big stock " hit" is their next pick.

I know there was a family murder by a desperate day trader in GA a few years ago.. I don't remember the specifics but people running all over the grounds of large offices in Atlanta was on the national news. The shooter was at large inside the day trading office, killing the people he believed had lied to him and the people in surrounding offices and buildings were terrified.

It appears that Raven has never quite found his true self.. There's quite a bit of bragging and untruths to what he chose to post about his life.. There's also the last entry he posted about how he had been dealt a difficult hand in life from birth, and how he planned on a whole new " beginning".

I hope I am wrong. I hope she was loved and cherished and that he was honest with her. I hope he didn't fall into the trap of the lure of easy money.

This is kind of interest....I found a site called Raven777's Xanga site..asking prayers regarding Janet's family, especially for Raven...saying that Janet was a former "fellow" employee" of theirs...that's a strange way of putting it..."fellow employee"

i'm really tired and I have a lot to post, but I wont play catch up right now.
But I will ask you guys a favor. Tuesday night, a former fellow employee of mine was found murdered in her apartment, and I just know that her husband Raven Abaroa is going through a really hard time and is full of grief, and they also have a 6 month old son... pray for that family and their friends as they go through this tough time. Thanks ya'll.

Mr.AG, have you heard anything back from the reporter that you contacted? I'm getting impatient . . . .

No, nothing yet, golfmom.

The man you were thinking of earlier, ThinkofLaura, was Mark Barton. He killed his family then went on an office shooting spree at the offices where he'd worked, and it all ended when the cops cornered him and he shot himself. Might be a fairly valid comparison, too, and your thoughts on what might be going on with the person who "wanted to be perfect" being found to have screwed up again might be right on target.

Click what you see above to see a screenshot clipped from my web statistics. Between 12 and 12:17 p.m. today someone using a City of Durham (NC) isp was reading my blog, The Dark Side, to the tune of 8 different pageviews.

Right now it could have just been a bored cityworker surfing for info about the murder, but you never know. I thought it was interesting enough that you all might want to know about it. Any guess as to what links from my site they were examining? (That was a rhetorical question. I do have a feeling they were focused on the Abaroa entries, but my web stats are not that detailed. I'll check some others to see.)

Thanks, lady -- like I said, coulda been a bored city worker, but the level of interest makes me think it was a cop doing further examination of the most likely suspect. What do you all think?

Bill Hess would just be their IT guy, that person will not always necessarily be the surfer, but the person responsible for maintaining, updating, protecting the system.

This is the blog entry they last read, according to another web stat program;

Could be a police investigator then....according the the Durham City Police department:

Central District officers currently work from an office at Durham City Hall at 101 City Hall Plaza. On-street parking is available on City Hall Plaza. Paid parking lots are available across Mangum Street from City Hall. The Central District offices are on the first floor, behind the security desk.

Have we ruled out the specuation about him changing his name? I saw his parents and grandparents names somewhere in this and it clearly states that one of his grandfathers last names was Abaroa. Somone who lives in the city and state where he says he was born can go look this stuff up at city hall. I use to have to do it for a job I had in college. It's readily available. It would be registered with the clerk of courts, you just have to go to the office in his town of birth. You can look up, birth certificates, death certificates and marriage license there also. Mind you each of those events has to have taken place in the county you are looking in. Just a thought.

That's my thinking at the moment, but I could be wrong.

Of some interest is who else is reading about the Abaroas, for whatever reason -- the Department of Labor (?). At about 1:30 a surfer from their domain accessed the site via a google search for "Raven Abaroa," and they were still reading 3 minutes ago. This is probably more likely to be a work-surfer, but who knows?

P.S. -- if you read my site, don't be paranoid. I don't pay such close attention to everyone's info as it shows up in my stats, just the ones that stick out, as these did for obvious reasons. I get over 1,000 hits a day at the moment, so I can't possibly check up on everyone even if I wanted.

That's a good thing because if you read my stats on some web sites you could see me logged in all day, but I'm not there that much. I just don't close things out when I leave my office.
