Gotta jump in here about the toe fungus. I got it in one BIG toe BG.

I'm blaming mine on a pedicure I had at a place where they probably didn't steralize their instruments properly.

I bought everything over the counter at the pharmacy & resorted to the internet and did read about Vicks Scandi. I even went to the Doctor & he wouldn't even consider giving me a prescription for that liver damaging stuff.

I ended up back at my Health Store and they recommended Oil of Oregano. IT WORKED IN 6 WEEKS!!! GONE!!! The little bottle has a dropper in it and I applied the oil to my toe and did my best to jam to end of the dropper down my toe. Pretty much saturated the area.

That is so interesting about Vicks & hair. Scandi - How exactly do you apply it? In your conditioner? Or did it work by treating your toes?

BG I did remove the polish.
i am so glad u asked about that jilly! i didn't want to sound like an idiot if it was obivous! lol i want to know what will make my hair grow!!

also, i had it on my big toe. i used a tea tree oil that looked like clear nail polish, same type of bottle. like u, i got it in every area i could. darn if i didn't get some kinda infection that inflamed my entire toe! i had to take antibiotics for that and it was painful. my toenail came off not too long after that and it is almost all the way grown out again. i would gladly used vicks next time if it happens tho. i love the eucalyptus smell!

LOL - I had the same feeling when I was asking about the vicks - but I figured go for it because I really would like to know! haha.

I love eucalyptus too. I used to belong to a spa that had a eucalyptus room with the stuff piped in. Great place to go when you had a cold. I've improvised since then though with a wide bowl of boiling water and a couple of drops of E in it. Put a towel over your head and bend over the bowel. Clears your sinuses right out!

Strange how you got that infection in your entire toe and losing the nail! I can only imagine the pain! I'm glad to know it's grown back.

Mornin' girls, I was kind of leery talking about this simply7 awful fungus here, but am sure glad I broached the subject. LOL Before I started my treatment, every time I saqw thqat Lamasil commercial with the ungodly little bugs crawling under those toenails I wanted to hide!

The sudden growth of my hair was a simple byproduct of using Vicks. I bought the smallest little pot of Vicks, just for my nails. $3.99 I think. I use my third finger and start with the big toe and kind of rub it into the cuticle and at the tip of my toes, applying a bit under the nail, and work down each toe, doing the same thing for all 10 toes. Then I sparingly rub it into the cuticle area of each fingernail.

I don't remove my polish. The old nail which is diseased by the fungus has to grow out. You're not going to change that nail, but rather want any new nail growing out to be free of the fungus. The nail grows from the cuticle out. And the Vicks stops the fungus from robbing the nail of something that is inherit to it - don't remember what that is.

Hair is made of the same stuff as are nails, and that is why I think getting rid of the fungus starts healthy hair growing back. I don't really know. But I think once that Vicks is in one's system, it works continually on this problem. If you have it to where you can see it in your big toenail, it is most likely in your other nails too, just not as noticable. On my fingernails I would get tiny bubbles or ridges across the nail. Now with them over 1/3 grown out, the new nail is perfect. Neato!

Good to know you don't have to remove your polish!!

Soooooo, you're saying because of the Vicks treatment to your nails, your hair grew better? I'm glad I asked!!

I'm going to start treating all my nails with Vicks today. Thanks Scandi!

Me Too!! What a great topic & what a helpful bunch of WS'ers we are!!!!!:blowkiss:

Well, since we're all grossing each other out talking about fungus, geez!
Yep, chalk me up for one who got it in my big toe last fall. My SO, who is a firefighter, said they've actually discussed this in training, LOL! He also advised that people he's known who have used that Lamisil or whatever it's called, also advised NOT to take it. I think if you read up on it, they recommend liver tests every 6 months or something similar after taking it. I figure if it's that bad, I don't want to take it unless all else fails.

So, for 3 months straight, I did the: 1) soak toe is plain white vinegar (several people suggested that) and 2) coat it with Vick's and then sleep with a sock on to cover it up without getting the sheets all icky. Yes, I was lovely to be around, between the smell of vinegar and Vicks,

I did it faithfully for those 3 months, and would say I did see improvement. Then I went on Christmas vacation in CA for a week, got off track...and haven't started it up again. Guess I should.

P.S. BG, I also wondered if it'd make a difference whether I had polish on or not. I hated the look without it on, so I kept it on. And certainly now, wearing sandles, I have it on. But if I'm doing this treatment next winter, etc. I think I'll take the polish off....

OK....I just Vixed all my nails and my male cat is all over me like a horney Tom Cat! What the heck is in this stuff?:D He doesn't even like catnip but this is certainly doing it for him! haha!

I'll have to do it before bed and close the bedroom door! LOL

hahahaha i can just see the cat doing that! that is hilarious!!

How Funny Jilly!

I think I got mine when I wore that cool pair of patent tennies once and they were a bit too tight and I got a blister on the top of my third toe thast broke. Evidently the fungus was alive in that shoe and went into my bloodstream.

I let it go for about a year and it started to become noticible. Thickened nails. After the Dr telling me about Vicks, I still waited another 6 mos or so till I noticed one day on my left big toe the nail was raising up at its cut edge and I could see something under it that looked spongy. Visions of those nasty little critters I'd seen on TV raced through mjy head and I consigned myself right then to fix it! I started that night with an old bottle of Vicks in my medecine chest, and used that until it ran out. It must not lose it's healing properties.

Today that big toenail is looking quite normal at the cut edge. It has a ways to grow out yet, but I can't see any spongyness underneath it anymore. I keep that nail trimmed short and always put extra Vicks under the edge there.

What a deal, huh!

PS: I only wear sandals now till I am healed up. I think if this fungus does live inside a shoe like a tennis shoe where the foot sweats and can be moist, those little guys have plenty to munch on! Can you imagine doing this for 3 mos, putting a pair of old tennis back on and getting it all over again!~ Baa Haa Haa Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ;}

hahahaha i can just see the cat doing that! that is hilarious!!

He does the same for any linament like Deep Heat, Bleach & Olive oil, lol. Must be something wrong with him! haha.

hubby called me from the drug store just a little bit ago and asked if i needed anything. he picked me up some vicks :D

it's really a good thing you asked, jilly, i would have been slathering it on my head! haha

:HappyBday HAPPY BIRTHDAY CLOSE_ENOUGH!!!!!
