I never knew that when I quit my job that I'd be working harder than ever on the ranch. The BarnGod has been helping others fix their fences for years, but neglected our own. Finally we are totally re-doing our own. I have been helping, using two tractors: one to pull posts and the other to dig post holes. Then we have to string wire. We're still at it. Unfortunately, we've had a string of issues with horses requiring calling the vet out. Our big Belgian, having been recently shod, started favoring a foreleg. Poor boy can hardly walk. One of our spotted drafts (older) has not gained weight recently and some of his hide is getting very hard and wrinkled. Our quarter Palamino almost tore off her nose on a gate when working at the sale barn. The vet at the sale barn spent 2 hours stitching her nostril inside and out. We then had to irrigate her nasal passage and give her penicillin as well as a shot of bute to reduce the swelling. Penicillin for three more days. Our regular vet came out today to check out the Belgian and Spotted Draft. We think it may be a stone bruise under the hoof as he tested him and found sensativity. Again, Penicilin and bute tablets. If no improvement he'll drill a hole in the frog area of the hoof and drain any infection if there. The most interest and intriguing was the hide of the paint draft. It seems as if some horses livers can quit processing chorophyll in feed, causing endorphins not to react to photosynthisis. In other words severe sunburn on the white parts of the hide. It is literally peeling off as a severe sunburn would. Poor baby is literally losing his hide. It feels very hard on his white parts and normal on the black parts. Nothing we can do. He will slough off the skin and new skin is definitely under and has white hair. The vet says it will grow back and he'll be just fine. In the meantime, we need to spray scaret oil on the tender raw skin, then soften with udder balm. Also we are going to use tea tree oil. I found it helpful on our Palamino mare that foaled. She had some spots that needed help. With wire cuts, castrations and now this, we are helping to support our vets. The BarnGod is having to mix and match 3 teams of horses as he starts in earnest driving for our attraction here: Old Town to the historic Kit Carson County Carousel each weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Well, I definitely will be seeing Shrek III - I just LOVE Puss (in and out of costume!:D)

But...I must be the only one that doesn't care for Johnny Depp!:silenced::truce: I did see Pirates I and wasn't going to bother with II. But since this friend of ours is in it - it came on cable last nite, hubby and I sat down to watch it.

We waited and waited for this poker scene & while I went to the bathroom hubby yells that it's on! I come a running only to find these 'creatures' hovering around the poker game with masks/makeup making each one totally unrecognizeable! So much for that!

Johnny's normal look does nothing for me...but in his Captain Jack hair/makeup, etc...swoon! Kinda funny, as it's the same for many of us (the females, at least, haha) at work. His eyes in that makeup :blowkiss:

Well, I will concede, I think he plays the part like no other could and the makeup & costumes are fantastic!:)

just for rc--- go to the lady's of indy....hope this works!

make sure you go thru all 25--- the last 2 or 3 i think you will really like

j2mirish,

Ha - I received the article you sent me - thanks very much ! Interesting article, it confirms much if what I have seen happen with these young women drivers - not much actual support. Racing is still the good old boys club in many ways. Glad Danica moved on to AGR - I myself have seen both a smile on her face lately and a considerable improvement in her overall performance.

In looking - I noticed to the left in the header right under "Sports" = Scott Peterson, Sports Editor - poor fellow - bet he caught heck for a while !

Thanks again ! I enjoyed the article ! It was very kind of you to send it to me :blowkiss: By the way, I had a truly great time at Indy, rain and all, there is just nothing like it! Amazing and this was one of the best races I've seen in a while - imagine passing cars at 220 plus mph - how awesome is that ?

Excuse me for butting in (but I am, anyway, LOL)...
There's a local attorney here named Scott Peterson...poor guy. I also think he ran for some type of elected position here - and didn't win. Every time I pass his business sign, I just cringe. Talk about negative word association!

Okay, y'all keep carrying on.... :blowkiss:

Hope his specialty is not criminal law - no jury is going to believe anything he says - all clients guilty no matter what !

Okay friends, thought I would get your take on this. I've attached the local news report - there is a small article and a video. In the article if you click on the blue "Police Documents" it takes you back to the original report from April when this freak was arrested.

http://www.ky3.com/news/7733502.html

I am interested in what you all think of this - keeping in mind that this fellow was just planning to do this. From my perspective it is obvious this guy definitely had some problem, what he was supposedly planning was never undertaken and honestly I hope they can throw him in a cell and throw away the key, but how can he actually be prosecuted for something he didn't do ? Any thoughts or ideas how this might happen ?

The trial starts this Friday.

Charlie, that's a tough one. From his picture, I'd guess he certainly didn't look like anyone who was writing for Swank or any other 🤬🤬🤬🤬 magazine. Writing out your fantasies is one thing but buying all sorts of potential torture and sexual equipment would indicate that he's prepared to take it a step further. I would hope they could get his "therapist" (if he has one) to cough up some info and quick. At the very least, this guy needs to have some kind of ankle bracelet and monitored 24/7. He may just snap any minute. I think he could legally be charged with criminal intent. After all he did put it in writing.

For everyone, I did some research on my paint draft horse's condition and found this on the internet. He has photosensitization. Here's an example of how he looks where he hasn't peeled off yet:

http://web.vet.cornell.edu/CVM/HANDOUTS/plants/Photosensitization_files/frame.htm

This is how he's peeling all over:

http://web.vet.cornell.edu/CVM/HANDOUTS/plants/Photosensitization_files/frame.htm

He's such a sweet natured gelding and the we and the vet are doing everything we can to help his healing. We can definitely see new hair coming in. Also we have to get him fattened up. Colorado Soy is getting together a feed to help him with increased soy in his feed so he can get more protein from grain than grazing so his liver doesn't need to be overtaxed. I'm keeping him in the barn during sunny days to help the healing.

BarnGoddess,

Looks like you really have your hands full. Is this a genetic issue or just one of those things that happens on occasion ? I have never seen this, some sun burning and occasionally one will come down with some rain scald but this looks pretty painful. Good thing the fella has a very caring owner ! Stay with it - he will come around !

Charlie, it's a liver disorder. His liver is not processing chloryphill properly. The Vet (who could double for Baxter Black and graduated with him from Colorado Univ Vet School) explained it to me in great detail. It pains me to pull off that leathery white hide and treat the raw areas with scarlet oil. It's amazing that he tolerates it and still nuzzles me and asks for love. To feel that wrinkled leathery white hide and then feel perfectly normal black hide is amazing. It's like a major sunburn peeling. He's about 6 years older than his partner who's perfectly normal. Treating a lame Belgian who scattes his feed for the chickens presented a problem. I had to crush 3 bute pills and I think the chickens were getting more than Chief did. I got an old Bass canvas bag I had and fashioned a tie over his head for a makeshift feed bag so he'd get all the feed and bute in him and not the chickens. Have to have the vet out again to probably drill and drain his hoof. The mare with the stitches from a badly torn nose is doing great and will heal with no problems. Have to mix and match draft horse teams to keep in business. Good thing we have three teams. One team of Paint Drafts (one out of business). One team of Belgians (one out lame). One team of Suffolk Punch. We are using a paint and a Suffolk successfully so far. Fortunately, we have a wedding to do and have bought a vis a' vis. That only requires one draft horse or a team of Standardbreds. So, we can take our pick of Belgian, Paint Draft or Suffolk for a single. We are going to try to train our Palaminos to drive soon, and start our young ones to start driving. Had to get our Appaloosa mare and her baby out today to check for our cattle that went missing. Neighbor called and said he had them in his pasture. The B****ds couldn't wait until we got our fence done before they took off looking for "greener pastures" I've got to get some pictures done to post of our beautiful colts. They've been "imprinted" since birth and are an absolute delight. Little one went looking for the calves right along with Mama.

I did try to watch the Indy 500. Missed the final part, left as Danica was in third place. But she did finish in the top 10.

BarnGoddess,

One thing I have learned, the gentle, caring equines always know the difference, they always know when your actions are focused on healing and help - they will tolerate just about anything because they know. They will always reward one with a nuzzle and respond to the companionship of the moment.

There are always those moments when we must do things for which we think we would knock someone stupid if they did those things to us - but these creatures somehow know - its a simple and total trust. His acceptance of your assistance, no matter how much it pains you or him, is the reflection of the relationship established between you both - that he tolerates what you must do, speaks of much deeper things - you have obviously done well...take that for what it is everytime he nuzzles you, it is a thankfulness beyond words.

Often with these beautiful creatures I wonder who it is that owns who, I suspect it is much different than what one thinks...:)

Charlie, you are the sweetest thing. I love each and every one of my beloved horses. The kinder and gentler approach is what we use here. Not one is abused for any reason at all. We use the principles of Pat Parelli, Monty Roberts and others who use methods of partnership with horses. We have a young girl we gave a horse to for 4H. Her filly is now 2 years old and we brought her in last night. She hasn't been played with all winter and I had to be a little firm with her at first. She spent the night in the barn on a short lead. I put her with our big lame Belgian today. Little Chelsee will have to spend next week working with her under my supervision doing ground work. She wants to show her as a halter horse and use one of our palaminos as a saddle horse. We'll see what happens as she needs to help out on our ranch to help pay for her horse.

Again, I thank you for your beautiful words for me. It means so much to me.
