What are y'all doing today?

Me - shopping :blushing: as soon as I get my rear up and going to town; ya know it's only to "help" the local economy, right?!

Later in the afternoon, stopping by a local BBQ joint to pick up Mr. DD's favorite sausage and 2 kinds of potato salad - then cruising to the fire station for their big shindig. Just hanging out there and riding along (got my paperwork signed :angel: ) if they get any calls. Normally, they're quieter than you'd expect on July 4th, so they might have a quiet evening before I cruise home (yes, RC - I'll be a WIMP and not make it to midnight, I'm sure) - but then again, I might jinx them, haha.

And YES it is STILL rainy here! I just can't tell ya how flooded things are around here. Last year's July 4th - no fireworks because we were under severe dry conditions and burn bans, etc. Well, now they've had to modify all the city celebrations, etc. as they're usually done on Lake Waco (well, the lakes and parks are all closed due to high water and safety concerns) and there's also another fireworks display that is done downtown on the river front. Again, they can't do that now due to the flooding. Wild, I tell ya!

Dep I didn't realize you were in the rainy section or is it that way throughout your State? Sorry to see you won't be having fireworks! But it sounds like you will have fun just the same at the firehall.:dance: That POtato (as Ted Williams on Greta would say!) sounds good with the sausage!! Mmmmm.

We are having our own sort of celebration here today - It is hubby's birthday! Yes folks....it's a biggie......he turns 60 today!! Of all the travelling he has done in his life, he regrets never being in the States on his special day - just to have some of your fireworks to go along with his celebration!

Anyways, hope you all have a great day today with your families!!:blowkiss:

One would have to know the normal lay of the land, but let's just say most of the water you see in the photos, is not in a river bed or part of the lake. It's horrible, the lake area is completely closed - parking lots, play areas, camping areas and party pavillions are completely under water...in some of the photos, the green tops sticking out of the water are the roofs of pavillions, play ground equipment, etc. I.e., photo #16 - all that stuff sticking out, that's the parking, play grounds, camping, etc. with only the tops of trees and roofs sticking out. NOT where water should be! The marina photos? Notice the boat owners can't even get to their boats; how ironic, eh? They're keeping people off the lake due to things being covered (can't see what you're on top of) and other debris floating around.

GOOD LORD!!!! I had no idea!! This is unbelievable! I have to start watching the news! Geez - you poor people have to go from one extreme to the other. Is there ever an in between?? Last I heard, you were having a drought! Thanks for the link! It makes me feel guilty now that we are having some fun with 80 deg....mind you, we had a lousey June and horrible, horrible winter.

Not too much of a celebration today for the 'old man'. Went to his favorite place today for lunch to chow down a big Cheeseburger, fries & coke!:crazy: His sister sent him 6 huge helium balloons with a can of beer for an anchor. I bought him a new shredder lol! I bought him one about 15 yrs ago and he maintains it's the best thing I've ever bought him. He shreds EVERYTHING!! However, since the thing was so old and sounding like a freight train coming through the house, I thought I'd upgrade for him (a WHOLE lot quieter) and so he can get rid of his CDs as well. This should be interesting... I better hide mine! lol

We have an afternoon celebration planned for this Friday at a club we belong to. Gotta have these sorts of things in the afternoon so we don't throw the old geezers out of whack with their early bedtime!

Let me know how the POtato Salad was....and if you don't eat it just 'axe' Mr DD for me, will ya?lol

I envy you the trail ride, Charlie. However, it's too d*mn hot here for me to consider it until our fall camping trip. Last ride for me was about 20 miles over historic Eastern Colorado Indian and old stage coach routes. We went up on a bluff to check out an old Indian campfire circle. It was a great lookout area because they could see in all directions. While we were out, we moved some cattle to another pasture and checked the newborn calves. We went up and down some pretty tricky rocky crevices and even got off and walked the horses down. Of course that was before it got so blasted hot. When we got back we had a great dinner. I was so tired it didn't matter that I forgot the air matresses, LOL. I'm ready for the fall camping trip. I regularly either ride or drive a horse and buggy 10 miles in early evening. We live 5 miles down from the highway, so down and back I know it's 10 miles. However, now it's wheat harvest, I don't compete with combines and grain trucks barreling down the road.

I'm getting too old for these really long rides. I need a gaited horse in my near future. My stepdaughter's boyfriend is starting my prize young quarterhorse, but I may sell or trade for a foxtrotter, Kentucky Mountain gaited horse, or even a gaited mule I rode. Know of one? Hildago (the quarter horse) has had the saddle on so far and never even balked. As soon as wheat harvest is over, he'll start riding him. If you know of anyone, He's registered as S.S Hildago (AQHA # 4562042), sired by Spanish Skill, out of Mexicali Cantina. Goes back to Skipper W in a direct line.

It was a warm ride no doubt, but we don't have all the challenges of your area nor the interesting places to go. The Mark Twain National Forest is not far and we headed in there so the trees kept us mostly shaded. All in all it was not bad. We usually have 2 midnight rides every year as well - full moons. As to Foxtrotters - my wife and boys ride Foxtrotters - very nice ride and believe it or not - very good on trail rides. The chap that does our shoeing has two gaited mules and says he wouldn't have anything else. Given your area and the steady feet of a mule - might be a good idea ! I don't know for sure but I have been told training a mule is completely different from a horse - the same things don't work.

You start talking Quarter horses - over my head on bloodlines, I don't know them well at all. I know some of the racing lines but the other lines, nope. One would think I should know them as they are very popular here but honestly, for jumping and dressage I try to discourage people from using quarter horses. Not because the horses can't do it well but because physically it is too hard on a quarter horse - that square shoulder takes a beating in those disciplines and ultimately that leads to some problems for them. Glad you are getting some driving in, like you, I don't think I would like dealing with trucks and combines either! Glad you and the Barn God are doing okay

Message boards new turf in Parker case

Since Walker County 911 dispatcher Theresa Parker disappeared, her case has drawn local and national media attention, and some have taken to the World Wide Web to discuss the investigation and speculate on her whereabouts.

Mrs. Parker disappeared on March 21. She was being divorced from former LaFayette Police officer Sam Parker, who has been called a "person of interest" in the case by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Mr. Parker was fired from the police department for having explosives in his locker. Authorities have searched Mr. Parker's home at least five times. In a statement given through his sister, Carolyn Wooten, Mr. Parker said he did not harm his estranged wife.

Online discussion forums, called message boards, allow people anonymously to discuss the case, organize search efforts, spread the word about scheduled vigils and play crime scene investigator, officials said. But the real investigators said they do not rely on what is written online, although they don't totally disregard the information either.

"(Discussion forums are) kind of a new development as far as law enforcement is concerned, and there are agents that do pay attention," said GBI spokesman John Bankhead. "Discussion forums provide an opportunity for people to voice their opinions about what's going on (and write) their theories about things."

Barry Hollander, a journalism professor at the University of Georgia, said message boards have different rules and expectations of behavior, but they all provide a sense of community. Users of a board often police it themselves, Mr. Hollander said.

"Certain people often emerge as leaders, or at least as opinion makers," he said.

On message boards about Mrs. Parker, users speculate about who is reading the posts.

"Does anyone believe that Sam Parker is reading these posts," wrote one user who goes by the name of "Tigerfan."

Mrs. Wooten said she does not look at the online message boards.

Other users wonder whether authorities are reading the posts.

GBI investigator Gary Rothwell has been working on the case of Tara Grinstead, who disappeared from Ocilla, Ga., in 2005. Mrs. Grinstead's disappearance sparked online discussions, which Mr. Rothwell said he monitors. Officials also said that message boards seem to pop up more for cases involving white females.

"You don't want the message board to drive your investigation, but I believe it is worthwhile to monitor," he said. "It doesn't mean you subscribe to every word."

Mr. Rothwell said investigators who monitor the message boards must have a thick skin, because authorities are often criticized in posts. On a message board about Mrs. Parker there is speculation about cover-ups by the "good ol' boy" system. Some posts have suspected agencies from the GBI to the LaFayette Police Department of looking the other way during the investigation.

Mr. Hollander and Mr. Rothwell also said message boards sometime stray from the topic, and users begin to bicker and argue, which has occurred during discussions about Mrs. Parker.

Mr. Hollander said message boards can be reliable sources, but he said it is important to read them with a "skeptical eye."

"A lot of professionals in areas have boards, and I'd certainly look at their posts as being more authoritative. There are an awful lot of smart people out there who post to these boards," he said. "There are also a lot of idiots who post. Bulletin boards and blogs are really cases of reader beware ... Buy into a post at your own risk."

Jilly, Ms. CPR Queen!

Someone sent me a video clip of Jay Leno's show where he's meeting a lady with Arkansas who is a CPR Queen, just like you!

It just happens to be that Mary saved the life of a $2.30 chicken! Yes indeedy, she did CPR on the chicken who had drowned in a pond. Did the breaths first, wasn't responding well, so she even did chest compressions! (Wonder if it's the same as on humans, LOL)

Jay asked her if she had ever done CPR before - she said years ago on a man, and he died!

It was pretty funny, she even talked about putting the chicken in a box and warming it up slowly with a hair dryer - she called it ICU; Jay took that and ran that ICU in Arkansas is a big box and hair dryer.

Guess you had to see it to appreciate it, but just wanted you to know I thought of you when they were talking to this lady about her CPR skills.
