Three children and two teenagers have been arrested over the murder of an 80-year-old man. Leicestershire, UK.

Blaming Internet/games/Social Media, etc
seems too simple IMO.
A convenient scapegoat.

Although my guess is simple as well:

Poor parenting.
Ineffective parental methods.
Negative role models.
Neglect.
Broken homes.
Damaged parents= damaged kids.

It all starts at home.

I don't know. I honestly don't know. When I was growing up (70's, 80's) poor parenting, neglect, broken homes etc etc all existed too. Though I also think that blaming Internet etc is too simple. Back then, I'm sure there were people who blamed violent TV shows. MOO

Definitely in the US…I was surprised to read of this happening in the UK, as I thought it was a uniquely American thing for younger and younger people to be committing crimes so violent.
No, I don't think uniquely American.
Among other recent incidents worldwide, a 14yo in Saskatoon, Canada, set a 15yo on fire, at school. It's here on websleuths.
I mean, what the actual...??

And music! Here in the USA at least, there was a lot of blame on music back in the day.

I genuinely believe lack of discipline, lack of family values and lack of community values are the main factors behind it all.
Societal values have shifted and changed and they are not for the better.

That Elvis was a corrupting influence lol.
Or the rap and heavy metal in the 80s/90s. I remember getting Guns n Roses, Appetite for Destruction, and it had a warning sticker on it. Ridiculous!! Still one of my favourite albums, and i still haven't committed any crimes.

I believe it is a combination of factors-- but it really comes back to the person doing the crime. With all of the violence in our society whether it is from movies, video games, internet, or whatever, most people ( including children) don't become killers, so I am left with the idea that ultimately it is that person (child) who is damaged, emotionally or mentally, or yes, just plain evil. We can't forget the home life of that person and parenting----there are issues of abuse as well. Nowadays we have social media, which is a relatively new element in our lives-- there is so much toxicity, bullying and such, that social media has to play a role in the development of murderers, including children committing murders and other crimes. Why do some people commit crimes and put the crime on Facebook? They want that recognition and attention. This is a terribly complex issue which has no one answer.

Re "Florida Student"
This attack had deeper cause than taking his console.
Much deeper.

It is not only blaming internet games. But have you seen some of the violent content in these games? Kids are sitting for hours and hours at a time, literally some play them 8 hours straight---and it consists of shooting at people or fighting and kicking people, over and over for hours a day, for months and years.

How can we ignore what that is doing to their young minds? The first impulse becomes aggression and violence if that is what they have focused on for hours and hours every day and night.

I agree that it totally depends upon many factors. Children with nurturing, caring families are less affected by the violent content in films/games than those that are in toxic, dysfunctional living situations. Those unlucky kids are more vulnerable to temptations like drugs/alcohol which can lead to violent incidents as well. IMO

I do agree that many are seeking attention and public recognition, even if for negative things---like attacking or robbing tc.

So...
isn't it parents' fault that kids under THEIR care
(quoting OP)
"are sitting for hours and hours at a time ..."
watching such games?

Parental duty is to control activities of their children.
Minors are THEIR responsibility.

But hey,
some are only too happy not to be bothered because kids are sitting quietly in their rooms doing... WHAT precisely?

Maybe we should start holding parents accountable for their kids' crimes.

This happened in Georgia, USA, after the latest school shooting.
Good!

The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is due to appear at Youth Court sitting at Leicester Magistrates' Court today.

A 15-year-old boy was charged with murder three days after Mr Kohli was injured and is due to appear at Leicester Crown Court later this week.

Mr Kohli's 1970s semi is the second to last house before the park entrance, just yards from where he was attacked. He would regularly walk his 15-year-old black and tan crossbreed dog, Rocky, in the park.

Neighbours and others living in the area said they had called the police in the two or three months prior to Mr Kohli's death over gangs of youths abusing Asian residents and reported seeing them kicking cans and climbing on bungalow roofs.

Mr Kohli was a retired factory owner and leaves behind his devastated wife, three children and two grandchildren

It is sad. It horrific that this nice elderly man had to meet his end in the manner. My heart aches for him and his family. But it is also maybe equally sad that these two young kids have essentially ruined their own lives at such a young age. Life was just getting started for them. I don't think I will ever understand this kind of behavior from people.

"Balaclava-clad boy, 15,
beat elderly dog walker to death metres from his home
as teenage girl, 13, filmed it and laughed,
Court told.

1740498087030.jpeg

A 15-year-old boy
'let his anger out' by racially abusing and beating an elderly man with a slider
as he cowered on his knees,
a murder trial heard.

A girl, aged 13,
filmed the 'pure violence' inflicted on 80 year-old Bhim Kohli
and could be heard laughing
in footage played in court on Monday.

Opening the case against them at Leicester Crown Court on Monday,
Prosecutor Harpreet Sandhu KC
told how on September 1 last year,
Mr Kohli 'did what he did each day'
and left his home in Bramble Way to walk his dog at Franklin park.

But he said
Mr Kohli did not get the opportunity to walk his dog for long or return home
as he had
the 'misfortune to encounter these two defendants'."

:(

My heart just breaks for this man and his family. It's just horrific. 80 years old and to be demeaned and treated in such a vile and despicable way, and for it to be FILMED and then he's being laughed at - makes me sick.
Those kids should never see freedom again, and I don't care that they're 13 and 15. They know the difference between right and wrong at those ages.
What on earth do their families think they're up to when they are out and about??
Where's the respect? Not just for people in their later years, but for themselves, their peers, their friends and families. This world is proper messed up and something needs to be done, it's a global issue ffs.

Am I right in thinking a slider is like a sandal shoe? If so even at 80 I’d suggest that’s quite a sustained attack to kill somebody with one.

I hope they get lengthy sentences - I’m sure even at youth offenders level in Leicester they’ll have big targets on their backs for racist murder (Leicester is a very diverse city - I’m sure a lot of the prison population even at Yourh level will be none white )

I would guess they are from families who don't care where they are or if they have respect. I think the kids' behaviour shows what kind of families they are likely from. JMO.
