“U.S. submarines are equipped with signal ejectors which may be used to launch identification signals, including emergency signals. Two general types of signals may be used: smoke floats and flares or stars. A combination signal which contains both smoke and flare of the same color may also be used. The smoke floats, which burn on the surface, produce a dense, colored smoke for a period of fifteen to forty-five seconds. The flares or stars are propelled to a height of three hundred to four hundred feet from which they descend by small parachute. The flares or stars burn for about twenty-five seconds. The color of the smoke or flare/star has the following meaning:

a) GREEN – Used under training exercise conditions only to indicate that a torpedo has been fired or that the firing of a torpedo has been simulated. [Note that an alternate color had been black which still is an acceptable answer for some questions.]

b) YELLOW – Indicates that submarine is about to come to periscope depth from below periscope depth. Surface craft terminate antisubmarine counter-attack and clear vicinity of the submarine. Do not stop propellers.

c) RED – Indicates an emergency condition within the submarine and that it will surface immediately, if possible. Surface ships clear the area and stand by to give assistance after the submarine has surfaced. In case of repeated red signals, or if the submarine fails to surface within a reasonable time, she may be assumed to be disabled. Buoy the location, look for a submarine buoy and attempt to establish sonar communications. Advise U.S. Naval authorities immediately.

d) WHITE – Two white flares/smoke in succession indicates that the submarine is about to surface, usually from periscope depth (non-emergency surfacing procedure). Surface craft should clear the vicinity of the submarine.”

These emergency identification signals should not be mistaken for the light assigned by the International and Inland Rules of the Road under the authority of Rule 1(c) to submarines (intermittent yellow (amber) flashing beacon).''

After hearing the story from the previous passenger ( Arthur Loibl)
who reported that the Titan had landed on the deck of the Titanic I can't help but wonder if they attempted this action again and there was a collapse of the deck which caused them to get tangled in the wreckage.....

In Timeline, Sub sent a distress signal. This is the first time I've seen this, must have missed it earlier.

They have no means of navigation in the first place. Their navigational system was based on the pings and then the mother ship sending text messages about their position (which surely must have been at the coordinates for the Titanic wreckage or near there, when they began their descent).

They have just darkness outside their window and have lights to shine on the wreckage (likely not working if there's no electricity). Electrical problem could be the precipitating event here.

Once they lost communication via text, they lost their ability to navigate altogether. The article describing last year's trip said that the Titan did get lost at one point. I don't think that every set of passengers has been treated to the actual viewing of the Titanic, because IIRC, last year, the Titan surfaced without seeing the wreck:

Article also describes an electrical system failure which left them lost and unable to navigate.

IMO.
If they have lost all systems I'd be wondering whether they would survive the ascent of 15000 feet. According to this article, after the sub was lost for about 5 hours in a prior dive there was talk of installing an emergency beacon on the exterior. However, if that safety feature was installed and the sub did surface they would have been found by now.

Sadly I am expecting the Titan to be the most recent "lost at sea" and will be searched for by the hunters for years and possibly never found. It took 75 years to find the Titanic as large as it was.
I feel the same way, sadly. Sound seems to be the only way to pinpoint the location (IF the banging is even coming from the Titan) but I believe that's extremely difficult to do given the way sound travels underwater. Since it was stated that the search area is twice the size of Connecticut, I just don't see a positive ending here.

Another press conference is about to start

We're set to hear from Horizon Maritime Services and Miawpukek Horizon representatives.
These are the groups behind the Polar Prince ship, which the Titan submersible launched from.

We're expecting a brief statement and will bring you updates as they happen.

There was a post earlyish in the last thread that states it was equipped with flares or suchlike and other things that they could use once surfaced. Had a search but can't find the post.

The flairs would need to be mechanically launched by a trigger from inside the Titan, right?

There certainly wouldn't be an unlimited number of such flairs.

What other things could there be? I think it's a crucial question. A big pop-up flag? A buoy that could be launched mechanically from the Titan?

We've heard nothing in MSM about such devices. There should have been a way to launch flairs - but I can't see how there could have been multiple rocket-like devices attached to that minivan-sized submersible. A lot would depend on the luck of the Titan still being fairly close to the mother ship.

IMO.

Marine industry no stranger to difficult incidents - boat company

Beginning the press conference, co-founder and chairman of Horizon Maritime Services, Sean Leet, says their thoughts and focus remain with the crew of the Titan and their families.

The marine industry in this region is no stranger to responding to difficult incidents, he says, adding that all of us are "unified" in the work to find the Titan.

He says "our critical role remains in a support capacity".

And he confirms the company has been supporting the Titanic expeditions for several years.

Leet says the Polar Prince remains at the Titanic site supporting the sub rescue efforts.
And his group's rescue ship, The Horizon, was sent back to the port to get more equipment.

"We will be at the Titanic site at 5am tomorrow morning. We are aware of the time sensitivity around the mission. We remain focused on the search of the Titan and for the crew and keep hope they will be found safely."

Boat company asked if families on board search vessels

Several journalists have been asking questions at this press conference, and Sean Leet is asked whether families of those on the Titan are on board the Polar Prince vessel which is searching for the missing sub.

He tells reporters "that's a question I can't answer".

Asked whether there was anything capable of lifting the Titan from such depths, he says:

"The equipment that is on site and coming to site .... is certainly capable of reaching those depths.

The equipment being used in the search is the "finest in the world, the most capable in the world", he says, adding that it was mobilised "flawlessly".

And that's the end of the press conference.

Bbm.
Yes.
IF.
Sad that corners were cut and safety mistakes made.
A perfect storm of errors and misjudgment ?
There's a reason for all of the 'stuffy' and strict protocols !
Still so awful.

'We are very aware of the time sensitivity around this mission'

The groups behind the Canadian research vessel Polar Prince say they are "very aware" of the time sensitivity around the mission and are continuing to support search efforts.
Sean Leet , chairman of Horizon Maritime Services, says: "Our critical role remains in a support capacity.
"It has been a very difficult few days for the crew and families of those on board Titan and Polar Prince. The captain of the Polar Prince and crew have been steadfast in providing support in this really difficult time."
Horion Maritime co-owns the Polar Prince - which lost contact with Titan around one hour and 45 minutes into its dive on Sunday.
He says the ship has been supporting Titanic expeditions for "several years" - and says the Polar Prince will "stay out until the search is completed".
"We will continue to hold on to hope until the very end".

Yeah but didn’t I read that once they got to the surface they had more ways to signal? Anyone else remember reading that? That’s one reason I’ve been pretty sure they did not surface.

If it was flares, then time of day and position of the Titan would be crucial. Easy to miss a flare or two.

Also, if the flare required an electrical impulse to trigger, it wouldn't go off at all, if they lost power. Supposedly, the Titan could still surface (via mechanical jettisoning of weight, which was supposed to be automatic after so many hours).

But if flares were their only signal device, maybe best to wait until nightfall to use the last couple. How so many flares could be at the ready to be ignited and fired by one small sub, I don't know.

IMO.

Most likely for privacy reasons ... as it's looking like it's not going to be good news for the families.
:(

Maybe there'll be an 11th hour miracle ?

It's sad that the submersible can't be opened from inside in the event of an emergency, such as the men being able to make it to the surface !

Polar Prince, the submersible's support vessel, will remain in the area until search is complete

The Polar Prince, the vessel that transported the Titan submersible to the dive site, will be assisting in search efforts until the mission is complete, according to the co-founder of the company that owns the support ship.

The role of the Polar Prince is to help the US Coast Guard which is leading the search and rescue, said Sean Leet, the co-founder and Chairman of Horizon Maritime Services.
