Tourist sub taking groups to find Titanic wreckage goes missing

The missing tourist submersible with five people onboard including British billionaire Hamish Harding has been missing since yesterday afternoon, and may have become stuck in the wreckage of the Titanic that it was diving to admire.

The sub, owned and operated by OceanGate Expeditions, was taking a crew of five people including company CEO Stockton Rush, French explorer PH Nargeolet and Harding 12,500ft underwater as part of its $250,000-a-head Titanic tour.

The crew launched at around 4am yesterday but lost communication with the mothership a short while afterwards. According to OceanGate's website, the sub can last for up to 96 hours underwater with five people consuming oxygen.

Maybe ?

But (again I'm not savvy about submersibles), wouldn't there be a gps of sorts ?
So even if caught in the wreck or if part of it collapsed, couldn't they people on the mothership tell where they were located, even if the sub wasn't moving ?

GPS does not work underwater, so an E-PIRB device would not work at depth, although it should work on the surface, if it was adequately protected from deep ocean pressure.

Something like the problem in locating missing Malaysian airliner thought to be sunk underwater.

^^^ It May be stuck in ships wreckage!!!?!?!?
*I was just thinking someone could have gotten too adventurous and tried to drive through some of the openings. Now, one billionaire is confirmed and who else? Because the site makes it sound like the five are all crew members unless they certified one or two of them as a mission specialist.

The wreckage is 370miles from Newfoundland in Canada but is in US waters. The Coast Guard in Boston is coordinating the search for it.

Admiral Mauger conceded that it may have become stuck in the wreckage - and said the Coast Guard does not have the capabilities to reach it if that's the case.

'We don't have equipment onsite that can do a survey of the bottom... there is a lot of debris [at this wreckage] so locating will be difficult.

'We don't have the capabilities at this time. Right now, we're focused on trying to locate it,' he said.

'It's very worrying. It could have become entangled in the wreckage of Titanic, we don't know yet.

'The wreck site is a long way from anywhere. The only hope one has is that the mothership will have a standby craft that can investigate immediately what is going on,'

Expedition ship Polar Prince is believed to have departed St Johns in Newfoundland on Saturday, with the submersible launching at around 4am Sunday.

He added that the Coast Guard does not have any ships or subs available to rescue the Titan from the ocean bed, and that more help is on the way.

OceanGate said 'several' government agencies were involved in addition to the Coast Guard.

The Titan subs have no way of directing themselves under water.

Instead, they rely on text messages from the mothership, instructing them where to go.

Last year, a CBS journalist was on the mothership when the sub went off course.

It was missing for two-and-a-half hours before it returned.

None of those onboard were harmed.

Titanic tourist submarine 'may be stuck in ship's wreckage 12,500ft below Atlantic': Cold War sonar plane and second sub deployed in race against time hunt for vessel that has 60 hours of air left and has been missing for more than 24 hours

  • The submersible has up to 96 hours of oxygen for a crew of five people
  • It lost contact 1 hour and 45 mins into yesterday's dive at 4am - it has now been underwater for well over 24 hours

The Boston Coast Guard is now looking for the missing vessel. The wreckage of the iconic ship sits 12,500ft underwater around 370 miles from Newfoundland, Canada

Vessel missing in 'remote area' of ocean
Rear Adm. John Mauger said at a news conference that the missing submersible went missing in a 'remote area' of the Atlantic Ocean.
The depth of the area extends about 13,000 feet, and aircrafts have been deployed to search the surface area.
But, he noted, right now the Coast Guard's capabilities are limited to searching for sounds.

Coast Guard notified about missing ship Sunday afternoon
Rear Admiral John Mauger announced at a news conference that the Coast Guard was first notified about the missing submersible Sunday afternoon.
The ship went missing at around 4am that day.

Sky News understands two others on board the vessel are French submersible pilot, Paul-Henry Nargeolet, and chief executive and founder of OceanGate Expeditions, Stockton Rush.

I've followed Titanic research for a long time, and P.H. Nargeolet is a big name. He will be a huge loss to the research community if the worst has happened. He has appeared in many documentaries including a few with James Cameron.

My guess is that the sub has either lost system function and become trapped on the ocean floor, unable to resurface or make contact, or it has imploded due to the pressure. Given the choice I think I'd personally prefer the latter, because it's all over very quickly.
