The state of Tennessee will seek the death penalty for Erick Jones in the murders of his one-time girlfriend's two daughters in December 2014. Kendra Tweed, the mother of the two slain girls, will go on trial after Jones. She is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated child endangerment, and two counts of aggravated child neglect.

Judge Allows Prosecutors To Seek Death Penalty Against Erick Jones
Erick Eugene Jones Jr. was served Monday with a superseding presentment charging him with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse in connection with the December 2014 deaths of two children in a house on North Hardin Street.

Jones was in Greene County Criminal Court for a motions hearing. Judge John F. Dugger Jr. denied a motion by defense lawyer Douglas Payne to deny a jury the option of considering the death penalty for Jones, who turned 24 on Monday.

I am guessing the attorneys assigned to represent the mother, Kendra Tweed, want to see what theory of the case holds up during Erick Jones trial. Jones' assigned attorney, Doug Payne, is the lawyer I use for personal and financial matters. He is tough but fair and can argue both sides. I dare anyone to say Jones had ineffective assistance of counsel later on if the sentence is death. Still praying for these girls' older sister and other loving family members. A tragedy for our little town.

Just read through this thread and the linked articles and googled some on mom. What a sad and tragic case. I hope he does get the DP, although he'll sit on death row forever being the 🤬🤬🤬 he was and is! Mom should get a very long sentence and hopefully while imprisoned she'll get clean and realize what she DIDN'T do: protect her children, that she kept having, from this violent man. moo

Detective Lt. Kenni Carter was one of the first law enforcement officers to arrive on scene after a call was made to 911 Dispatch about the girls, who were pronounced dead at Takoma Regional Hospital.

Crime scene photographs taken inside and outside the North Hardin Street house by Carter were reviewed Friday to establish a foundation to present them at trial.

Photographs of rooms in the house, including one of the couch where Kynsleigh Easterly was sleeping according to a statement by Jones, will be allowed. In one photograph, a blackboard is placed where the girl was found by first responders.

The admissibility of photographs taken by other officers will be addressed at a Feb. 26 motions hearing scheduled by Dugger.

Jones' Account Of Girls' Deaths To Be Heard

https://www.greenevillesun.com/news/local_news/jones-account-of-girls-deaths-to-be-heard/article_a0cac975-89ba-5091-b0e9-a8b64dcb2114.html

Defense motions to suppress signed statements given to Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents by Erick Eugene Jones Jr. were denied Monday by Criminal Court Judge John F. Dugger Jr.

The statements were given by Jones after the December 2014 deaths of two little girls in the Greeneville house where he lived.

Still to be heard at an upcoming hearing is testimony about other statements given by Jones to the TBI and a Greeneville police detective about Jones’ alleged role in the Dec. 17, 2014, deaths of 13-month-old Kynsleigh Easterly and 2-month-old Trinity Brooke Tweed.

Jones’ trial is now scheduled to begin on Sept. 17, moved back from a May date previously set by Dugger.

Murder Case Hearing Takes A Strange Twist

Greeneville police Detective Lt. Kenni Carter had taken the stand to testify about his reading of a Miranda statement to Jones after he had been taken into custody in December 2014 following the deaths of two small girls living in the same North Hardin Street house he did. Jones had requested to speak with investigators after he had been taken into custody, Carter said.

Judge John F. Dugger Jr. overruled a defense motion to suppress, questioning whether Jones should have read the Miranda statement detailing his rights on his own. Dugger said the Miranda statement read by Carter was appropriate for Jones, who then gave police a statement.

After the hearing was adjourned, prosecutors and defense lawyers conferred briefly with Dugger in his chambers before court was again called into session. Jones, who was about to be taken back to jail in another county, was returned to the courtroom and took his seat at the defense table.

Carter alleged that while he was on the stand, Jones made an obscene gesture toward him with his finger “disguised by scratching his ear,” Dugger was told.

“You’ve got very serious charges and we’re working very hard to make sure you get a fair trial,” Dugger told Jones. “Don’t show any disrespect to the court.”
