ATLANTA — At least two people have died and a third is seriously injured after an early morning incident in a Delta Air Lines maintenance area at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, multiple sources confirm to Channel 2 Action News.

Sources confirm to Channel 2 Action Newsthat a tire on the plane exploded while it was being removed, killing a Delta employee and a contractor. A second Delta employee suffered a major injury, but there is no word on that person’s condition.

Delta TechOps is responsible for the maintenance of all the airline's planes, and Atlanta serves as the global headquarters, servicing more than 200 routes around the world.

It is understood the Boeing 757 arrived in Atlanta from Las Vegas on Sunday night, WSB-TV reported.

This article reports that the aircraft involved is a Boeing 757-200: 2 Delta workers killed in tire explosion at Atlanta airport

The 757 is, without a doubt, one of the best commercial aircraft ever manufactured, and came into being well before the current issues associated with Boeing; however, with the program having been discontinued decades ago, there are an increasing number of problems being reported on the model (which, while being uncommon in passenger service globally, remains widely used by Delta and United in the US), owing to both typical aging and subpar maintenance. It'll be interesting to see what exactly happened here.

MOO.
