The conflicting reports are just chaotic. :(

All of these totally INconsistent reports are driving me bonkers.

Ive been switching back, and forth, but had to stop due each one saying something different.

Fox is the only one I've seen going strictly by what the PR police officer has said in each of his PCs, and the reports coming from the actual medical centers.

"Police scanner traffic from the area suggested that Crusius was taken into custody about noon local time. The shooting began about 10 a.m., officials said."
Patrick Crusius: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com

I find it incomprehensible that it would take police two hours to respond and deal with the suspect.

Explanations?

They may have negotiated with him.

This absolutely was not a two hour shooting event, as law enforcement was on the scene quickly, and the victim count doesn’t lend itself to that.

Honestly, when are we going to bring back long term mental health facilities for people who are dangerous to society?

Most of these mass murderers wouldn't have been flagged as insane and dangerous back when we had accessible long term mental health facilities for people who are dangers to themselves or others.

There are criteria that were sort of even necessary back in the last era of long term psych hospitals (70's-80's) which is they have to demonstrate they were a danger, (or in the old days, have really good insurance or rich parents and any diagnosis that could keep them in until the funds were exhausted).

Criteria exists to prevent abuses of people who aren't ill enough to be involuntarily committed.

Yes it has made it harder to commit people but that's not necessarily always a bad thing. Because again, many of these murderers wouldn't even be flagged. Many hadn't been diagnosed with anything. Many don't have friends or family who have more than slight concern. Most are surrounded by people who couldn't conceive of them doing something like this, even if they exhibit odd behavior or obsessions with violence and hate.

Of course lack of access to mental health care and long term facilities for people with issues is part of our nation's health crisis but again, even if we had accessible care for mentally ill people i don't think it would make a difference for a lot of these mass murderers. Most of them aren't cases of cycling involuntary holds and desperate attempts to get them treated or housed while they're seriously ill, and necessitating stablization, like Andrea Yates.

Most of these people quietly simmer under the radar until they erupt. Oh there are signs but usually not anywhere close to enough to act even if we had excellent health care for people with mental health issues.

From the video I've seen, it looks like he was apprehended in his car, so maybe it took a bit of time to find him.

It definitely wasn’t, you could tell by the rate of gunfire.

Military style weapons still require a modification to make them fully automatic, and they (automatic weapons) are rarely used in crimes like this.

It looks like an AK-47 to me.
I think the last mass shooting to use an actual full auto weapon was the San Ysidro McDonald's shooting in 1984. I know the SB shooters tried to modify their weapons to go full auto but they failed at some point. There are way too many hoops to jump through along with cost for these cowards to use an actual full auto weapon

It's an AK clone called a WASR-10. Same model was apparently used by the Gilroy shooter as well but there's been differing reports on that.

I think (and hope) he will get the death penalty. He really deserves it.
The problem is that Texas has the death penalty but it takes forever to execute (some DR inmates were sentenced in the 70's and never executed....o_O)

Not to worry: Dude is toast.

The United States' Congressional Research Service acknowledges that there is not a broadly accepted definition, and defines a "public mass shooting" as an event where someone selects four or more people indiscriminately, and kills them, echoing the FBI's definition of the term "mass murder."

Writing a coherent diatribe about anything does not equate mental stability. If there were warning signs that he was a danger, there are so few facilities in operation that would contain a person who is a danger to society. We need to address the mental health crisis in the US...and soon. JMO.

Mental instability is not close enough to warrant involuntary psych holds. Sorry. If that was the case a third of the country would have to be committed.

There are thousands of young men like him- anti-social, under achieving, immature, entitled, arrogant, believing they should be bestowed with a respect and authority they neither deserve nor have worked for and who are quietly simmering with entitled rage and drawn to extremism and hate.

The vast majority don't become murderers. And most do not have any form of psychosis or other significant diagnosis.

Also just because a person chooses to be evil and do evil things doesn't mean they're insane. Or even mentally unstable. Much of the time it's simply a choice.

Thank you good to know

Would a larger cartridge work? I know they are still sold. Not legally, I don’t think. I don’t know TX gun regs.

I would be thrilled if the reports of 18 dead turn out to be false.

Would you be able to tell semi from fully? I haven’t heard the gunfire yet.

I’m figuring he may have been a bit overwrought but maybe not. It’s hard to replicate military training at the gun range. But perhaps he was associated with a paramilitary group. I’m interested in that.
