TX - Eight people shot to death at Plano home, 10 Sept 2017

Awful. I'm surprised the officer entered the residence without backup. Actually, I'm surprised the officer entered at all. Would've thought the swats would've been called in.

I think he probably felt he had no choice. I'm thankful he put his life on the line to stop the rampage. No telling what else this guy could have done and killed.

That's the truth!

If its true and he is the same suspect that was called on for showing a weapon at another location (LE were called) he very well could have gone back. This officer is a hero.

Scanner communication is in this link for that night. It's a little heavy.

http://heavy.com/news/2017/09/spencer-hight-plano-shooting-photos-wife-meredith-lane/

From that article:
He had also recently been complaining about back pain in Facebook posts.

“Lack of sleep due to chronic back pain made for a pretty ****** holiday weekend. Here’s hoping the doctor can sort me out,” he wrote on September 5.

On August 1 he wrote, “Aaaand my back is f*cked…this pain med/muscle relaxer garbage the doctor put me on makes me a damn zombie. Don’t try to move heavy furniture without help people.”

Any possibility the pain reliever/muscle relaxer and back pain could be factors?

Very heartbreaking.
Was already wondering if it was a domestic dispute that turned deadly. :(

I'm on a pretty hefty mix right now of Vicodin, muscle relaxers and gabapentin. Also oral steroids and a steroid injection in my spine. I was a basket case until just recently. Is it going to make me shoot 8 people? No. But I cried after I ate all my cookies. However I am taking my medications as prescribed he could have been doing more / unsafe things with it.

Call me a skeptic but I'm gonna call bullsh. I have chronic pain. I'm on meds and even have a drink or two but I never have thoughts of shooting up a bunch of people! This sounds premeditated to me. JMO

This article states that the group was together for a football watch party.

The article also states that Texas Rangers are involved because the 1 lone officer went into the house before backup arrived. I'm a bit confused as to why that was a cause for Texas Rangers to investigate. Is it against procedure for only 1 officer to respond without backup?

From the MSM I read the officer could make a judgement call but they NORMALLY wait for backup. I think the TR are involved because a police department can't investigate their own officer shooting.

Don't quote me on all this but this is my understanding.

Apologies but I think there are two threads about this case. Can they be merged ? Tia.

That makes sense. However, in my book, that officer is a hero! He placed himself in extreme danger to stop a murdering psycho. Had he not gone in there, there would likely have been another murder victim at that scene. In addition, who knows what a killer on the rampage would have done to other innocent victims? He could have gone on to murder other residents on that street or just in another random location. Apparently he was just in an uncontrollable rage. JMO

Police no longer wait for back up if they feel that there is an "active shooter" who is bent on killing everyone in the area.

Rather, the responding officer becomes the SWAT team. Officers responding even minutes later then become the back up Swat team and enter the building. The goal is to kill or capture the shooter as soon as possible and thus save as many lives as possible. Thus, the brave officer immediately entered the home, shot and killed the attacker.

Some times, however, the shooter's actions cause confusion as whether or not he is an "active shooter". For example, the Pulse attacker initially was an active shooter. He then took hostages and appeared to be willing to negotiate (at least to a degree). As a result, the arriving officers did not rush the attacker. Rather, they waited outside and called for negotiators and Swat back up. He then started murdering the hostages again.

No question. I was listening to the scanner of the officer and it seems he said "shots fired" he waited a bit then said "4 shots fired". He was either waiting for backup (which his chief said is normal) or scoping out the situation. He clearly went in after the 4 shots fired. I'm so impressed and he is def a hero in my book too!!!

Thank you. I just went by the chief saying waiting for back up is normal but they fully supported him going in without it.
